Reed de Févin "You were my everything."Reed was giving Tori a curious look when he heard Tyvinda talk about the other teachers at the school. A grimace flashed over his face. Ugh, some of the staff openly talked about their relationship? First, the buildings were run down from neglect, second, there were barely any students showing up, and finally, the teachers were focused on sex?! He was getting a stronger urge each second to quit.
That's when he heard about Soran being unable to read music. The musician tensed up and spun around quickly to look at him. "What?! Oh no. No, no, no, no, no! Parroting music is a very bad technique for a musician. Sight-reading is a huge part of music, so you'll never be able to hear it an mimic it. You can say anything you want to justify yourself, you could play like Mozart or any musician you respect, but you won't be put into any concerts if you can't read a note.
"Now, it only seems impossible to read music because you've been relying on imitation for so long, so your mind's resisting the change, but there's a way to salvage this. You somewhat know the fingerings, so all we have to do is add the notes to it. Here's a fingering chart. We'll work with piano since it uses both major clefs." Reed pulled out a couple piano books from his folder and set it on a nearby stand. He pushed it towards Soran and opened one book so that it would show notes going up chromatically and each of their fingerings. The book next to it was a beginner book for kids. "We'll have to work on easy songs until then. No complaining or I'll make you take lessons every day." "Your music will live on."

He writes his own music after all just without all the sheet music," Torithÿn snorted while watching Soran's eye twitching at seeing the sheet music. Whoo! The youngest of the phantoms had succeeded in throwing someone under the bus just so he could rest his eyes for a few minutes. He was so cruel at times, but the dark haired male had to understand he was tired. Of course his throwing Soran under the bus had made Viaresu start snickering out of amusement so for once since he came into this room, he was a happy halfbreed.
xxxxx"I write his sheet music for him," the blonde male smiled lightly as he assisted Torithÿn's distraction which only got Soran to shoot a dark glare at him. "I don't parrot music, Mr. de Fevin. Humans parrot my music... Or they would if I hadn't had other people writing the sheet music for me. I play from the heart and just write lyrics that express much more than people realize."
xxxxxAt seeing the teacher hadn't seemed to notice it and said he couldn't perform in concerts without being able to read sheet music, the dark haired male's deep golden-brown eyes began to tear up. "Noooooo! Don't take concerts away from me! I can't be happy without playing my music! You can't take that away from me! It's been my only friend since I can remember anytime I was alone," he bawled making Torithÿn and Viaresu both jump slightly. They hadn't expected him to start crying over that. "I-I just c-can't read it. I've been trying with-with lots of teachers, but-but they say I'm unteachable. Even when I'd tell them I'd written songs that people listen to even today, they don't believe me. They don't even believe that Tori's eldest brother Eric is the original -." Viaresu slapped a hand over Soran's mouth while ignoring the tears still streaming down his cheeks.
xxxxx"Take it back! Take back the comment of him not being allowed to play in concerts. His life practically revolves around performing for people. He's got a fricking guitar strapped to his back and an entire extra dimension full of instruments he's cared for since I met him. You can't just say he can't play just because he can't read sheet music," Viaresu growled at the teacher while inwardly glad Soran had stopped talking and wasn't licking his hand to get him to remove it. Seeing as the dark haired male was simply crying now, the blonde removed his hand and motioned him to sit at the piano with his guitar still strapped onto his back. "Music is his life, Mr. de Fevin. It expresses what he's felt for a long time and has had no one around for him to go to. People can feel the emotion in every note he plays and every syllable in every word he sings. Taking him off a stage is like telling everyone to bottle up their emotions instead of screaming and crying when they're angry or sad. You bottle up your emotions, sir, and all that you've built up will consume you." "All that sensitive chatter. Bleh. Quit crying, Soran. We all know you'd find a way to perform in concerts without the sheet music. And you're touching the keys to In My Remains on the piano..." "That's 'cause it'd sound better if this piano were an organ... That's what it was written with originally... If I had a keyboard with various settings, I could play Just Can't Get Enough 'cause I'm addicted and I just can't get enough of music... Even looking between these two books, I don't get any of this sheet music... I mean... That's a rest sign and that's a partial rest sign, but it doesn't coincide with how I taught myself to play my instruments. I never had a teacher after all so I taught myself how to play all of these instruments among others..."

Sighing to himself, he rolled up the folder of music and bonked each boy's head with it. "Enough." he said in a stern voice. "Listen here, because you didn't earlier. You could be better than music, you can even claim that Mozart copied you (which I'm sure you are) but I don't give a crap. Mozart could read sheet music, he knew the inner workings of music. Without the basics of reading music, you'll never understand music theory or even music history. Can you tell me what a Bb minor triad is? You can't, because you don't know the notes or the key signatures. It's Bb Db and F." He pulled up a seat and sat down next to Soran. "If music's really your life then learn it how it's meant to be learn, and don't you dare give up because you think you're unteachable. It's just too hard for you, and I'll help you find the right technique. I'll follow you to all your classes if it means helping you learn!" he smiled brightly. "As for you learning the instruments, that's kinda like a life-hack. I've met plenty of students that have learned instruments on their own, some like you and some who just sat in front of a fingering chart. You all share a problem, though: You learned it wrong. There are certain techniques for certain notes, and when it comes to trills there are other fingerings you have to use. But for now, let's work with vocals. Just tell me the alphabet and stop when you reach G." he instructed."Your music will live on."

At being told what to do by the auburn haired male, Viaresu gave a soft scoff before sliding a flute out of his jacket. While he didn't put it to his lips, his fingers began shifting themselves over it as if he were playing it. The infected phantom let out a soft sigh before beginning to play his cello again, inwardly happy that Viaresu hadn't started up a fight with the teacher. Pausing again, he asked, "Why was I hit? I didn't even have my eyes closed nor was I arguing with you. I just said Viaresu was talking all sensitive-like."
xxxxx"Good luck with teaching him," the blonde finally muttered cooly as he seated himself a few chairs away from Torithÿn. After a few minutes of silence, his gaze shifted up and a half-smirk slid up onto his face. "What is but a grain of sand amongst the storm? It's a real thing, Soran, but don't worry about it. He'll see soon enough why you are the way you are."
xxxxx"What? Bb minor triad? Is that-? The inner workings of music doesn't even-. What the heck is music theory and music history?" Soran asked, confusion as clear as day on his face. At seeing Viaresu motion him to calm down, he inhaled deeply before releasing it slowly. He just had to do as the teacher asked of him. Inhaling once again while inwardly calming himself, he recited the human alphabet all the way up to G with a smooth, silky flow to his voice that seemed inhuman. It was as soon as he paused that he heard Torithÿn and Viaresu snickering about something. "Wh-what?" "Nothing, Soran. Just something my incubus half finds amusing and Tori's finding it funny the teacher never specified which alphabet he wanted you to use."

Reed remarked coolly. What brats, but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to. He'd taught elementary kids before. "Or are you so smart that you can't recite your A, B, C's?" he asked the blonde from over his shoulder, sticking his tongue out at him. He turned back to Soran and smiled at him. "Yeah, that's it. Don't worry about theory or history, we've got a long ways to go before any of that. Now, those sets of letters you just recited is the musical alphabet. Whenever you reach G, you continue by starting back at A, starting the entire cycle again. Any questions?" he asked then quickly turned to Tory. "Oh, and when I bonked these two they made different sounds. I just wanted to hear how your bonk would be." he smiled brightly before turning back to Soran and watching him patiently."Your music will live on."

xxxxx"Quit going to libraries then. You've probably run out of books to read anyways," Torithÿn sighed only to puff up his cheeks behind his medical mask. He hit him just to see how the sound of bonks differed? They weren't a drumset much less pots! "That's a terrible excuse. That's like punishing a wild animal for acting upon it's natural instinct."
xxxxx"Not yet... If you do the hand thing with the fingers or lines being E, G, B, D and F while the spaces between the fingers or lines are the letters F, A, C and E, I'm gonna hit you though. I understand the letters. The letters are easy. It's all the extra things scribbled onto it that I'm confused on. Like these fraction things and how on some lined areas there's this cursive S thing and on others there's that thing. I mean, I think the fraction thing is supposed to be beats per measure or something 'cause music is something that goes along with dance and dance has a measure of eight and the fraction things are always going along with that type of measure where you'd go one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and over and over again... It's those things that confuse me and yet when I play new songs to Viaresu and Eric, they're scribbling down the notes I'm playing with relative ease along with all of these symbols," Soran sighed lightly while briefly holding his hand up and tapping his fingers and the spaces between them when he was speaking of the lettering. When it came to the other symbols, however, he pulled out a rolled up set of papers with an untitled composition on it and pointed to them. Wasn't that one more than one count of being played? There was so many symbols!

"Those are called time signatures, they're used to help the musician reading the song keep a steady rhythm. First of all, whenever you write the time signature, you never put a line between the numbers. It's just a no-no. Second, the bottom note will always tell what kind of note will get the beat while the upper number tells you how many beats are in a measure. Those thunks you hear on a metronome are beats, by the way, and they change speed according to the music's instructions, like an Allegro's 110 to an Adagio's 80. You know the division of notes, right? A whole note is separated into two half notes, which are separated into four quarter notes, which are separated into...?" he drifted off to let Soran answer."Your music will live on."

If only it wouldn't damage such a beautiful instrument... "Eight eighth notes, right?" Soran responded while brushing his hair out of his face. This sounded like fractions to him and those two little numbers over there looked like a fraction even without the line between them. If this was going where he thought it was going, he was gonna go hit his head against a wall. "Then it'd be sixteen sixteenths. Where is this going exactly?"
xxxxx"He looks like his opinion of sheet music hasn't changed," Torithÿn whispered over to Viaresu who merely nodded. Snickering lightly, the blonde continued playing with his flute instead of watching Soran's expression. It was the same expression he'd given him when he tried to explain it and the same as he'd given Eric when he tried explaining it. He was hearing the words, but there were dots that still weren't exactly connecting whether it be a conscious or unconscious thing.
xxxxx"Perhaps I should've explained it to him in a better way than he just doesn't know how to read sheet music. Oh well. It's his problem now," Viaresu mumbled lightly only to snicker softly to himself. He wasn't surprised by the fact that Torithÿn had picked back up on playing the cello, but the tune did. It was that haunting little song of Come, Little Children he'd heard various others play before him. Strange, but he was definitely hitting the proper notes in playing it.

He had no idea what this dotted half note tied to an eighth note and a quarter rest meant. Glancing briefly at Viaresu, he didn't see him giving him any aid in such a thing. "it's a... And that's... You get a headache! That's my answer 'cause I don't know what they look like and it's what I'm getting trying to follow this. I'd say a 5/8 and six beats, but part of me is calling me a moron 'cause I don't know how a dotted half note ties to an eighth note and a quarter rest. I mean, does that mean the half note is four-eighths plus the eighth note that's there and then two beats get skipped in the quarter rest? But then we're missing a note out of the eight that would exist out of the total so is it actually 6/8? Shoot me... I'm confused," Soran answered after what felt like an eternity of just hearing him groan with his cheeks puffed up. At finally having given his answer, he hung his head down while awaiting someone to correct his lack of understanding this sheet music talk.
xxxxx"At least he's not just staring at you with utter confusion," Torithÿn mumbled while getting Viaresu to nod slightly. While Viaresu could've given him the answers, he was letting the teacher experience that whole confusion that came to the guitarist when faced with sheet music. He wanted to know how Soran couldn't understand the sheet music after years of more than one, more than ten, teachers explaining it to him and so here it was. He was trying, you could tell he was trying to put it together, but it wasn't quite sticking.

"Whenever a note is dotted, it means that half of the value of the note being dotted is added to it. Take the dotted half note, for example. Half of a half note is a quarter note, so you would add that to the half note to have a three beat note. Add the eighth note and you get three and a half, but with the quarter rest we get a total of four and a half beats, which is already incorrect. Even if we were to count the beat as an eighth note, we'd have a total of eight and a half, and no time signature contains any of those. As for 6/8, although its numbers say each measure is six beats with eighth notes taking the beat, it's completely different. It's under a classification called a simple meter, and though few conductors conduct in six with this time signature, it's most commonly conducted in two, with two dotted quarter notes taking the beat. If you use math on the dotted quarter you'll end up with three eighth notes for each one, and since there are two to a measure you'll get six, just like the time signature indicates."
Done having his fun confusing the poor boy, the music teacher plopped a hand on top of Soran's head and ruffled his hair. "Not so easy is it?" he laughed heartily. "Maybe you'll think twice before looking as if you're in the most boring lesson ever, eh? Those basics will help you learn the hardest of time signatures." He looked over his shoulder to the clock and pursed his lips. "Looks like time's almost up, so we can stop here. But hey, you write music, right?" he asked and looked back to Soran."Your music will live on."

He just wanted to hit his head against the wall from just this little bit of a lesson. What made it worse was how the man laughed before explaining it to him. Was this a joke to him? He was trying to seriously understand this sheet music gibberish! "Yeah, I write my own music. Viaresu, Tori, Eric, Ross, Seda and Cirdan do too."
xxxxx"Don't throw us under the bus! I don't like people hearing my compositions like the rest of you do," Torithÿn growled irritably before going to return the cello from where he'd gotten it. Viaresu, unlike the phantom, merely returned his flute to the inside of his jacket and stood up. He didn't say much about having his own written music, just simply appeared to be waiting for Soran to move away from the piano. As if something clicked in his head, he removed what looked like a small piece of paper with scribblings on it and slapped it against Torithÿn's forehead. "In case you fall asleep and turn into your predator self. I'm pretty sure the school board and principal would freak out if you started turning the students and teachers into brainless zombies."

You can click the note you want, and your computer will play that note at the same time for you. I'm sure that if you play with it enough you'll start grasping some notes without even realizing it." Reed smiled before looking over at Tory. "If you don't like people knowing about your work then why not use a fake name?" he suggested with a shrug. "Plenty of people hid their names, even composers like Francois Couperin."
The musician finally turned to look at Soran, his expression softening considerably. "I know it seems frustrating," the teacher said sympathetically, having caught the look in Soran's eyes. "but music's a very difficult thing to learn, and it'll take much more than a day to learn it. Don't worry, Soran, I know, for a fact, that you're not unteachable. Anyone with that much passion deserves to learn about what they love, and I'll help you through it all.""Your music will live on."

Man is getting dumber by the second and they can't seem to understand that stupidity is contagious like aids and STDs," the auburn haired male responded with a brief half-shrug. Ignoring the fact that the piece of paper had turned into an intricately designed circular seal on his forehead, he sat back down in one of the chairs in the room and shut his eyes as if preparing to fall asleep sitting up.

Just uh... One minor problem. I don't own a computer. I don't even own a cellphone. The most technological device I have on me is... this!" Pulling out what looked like an MP3 player, Soran seemed very thrilled about it. "I have several spells on it that helps it maintain it's battery life, have unlimited storage space on it and it can record various different sounds and I can mix it together into one slot so it's one song with amazing clarity. I have to borrow people's computers, however, to put songs that aren't mine on it. It took me forever to find someone with a computer who actually knew who Enigma was. Some of the best music ever is in Enigma's work. Ain't that right, Viaresu?"
xxxxxFeeling his face heating up, Viaresu shoved his hands into his pockets and shifted his gaze to where he was tapping his foot against the ground.
