Jan 2014
This month's prompt (#15) is...
It’s a magical time of the year, isn’t that what they say? What if your character’s Christmas wish came true, only they don’t find out until the New Year? On the morning of the New Year, when the sun is just rising, your character finds out that something has changed noticeably about them. This is something that could very well change their whole life or the lives of those around them. Did they get something in the mail? Have they transformed somehow? Did they have some sort of encounter in the previous year that’s making itself apparent now? Maybe they’re not even in their own world anymore! Either way, their New Year is going to have a beginning as colourful as that first sunrise. From this point forward, your character is going to be affected by their Christmas wish. Tell us in a short story how, what, why, when and where and try to make it a memorable one! January 2014 WINNER!
(Its unfinished as I had to scrap my old idea, but I'll actually be trying to finish this one)
“Another new year alone” Jess said to herself as she watched the minutes dwindle by on her watch. The young woman sighed to herself as she took a few swigs from a beer bottle sitting nearby. She was getting tired of this life. She lived alone in a small apartment, which right now was in a serious need of cleaning with her clothing, bottles and other things scattered about the flat.
As she polished off her third drink that night, her watched beeped shrilly, its face showing a large 2014, the new year had begun. With that, Jess staggered from the living room to her bedroom and literally thumped into bed.
When the sun had kissed the earth on the new day on January First, Jess stirred, Not knowing if she were still drunk or just dreaming she grabbed her pillow and used it to block the light. Groaning once more her nose picked up an oddly familiar smell. Something sweet and wheaty was wafting from her kitchen! Now Jess were thinking that someone had broken into her house and helping themselves to her food!. Without thinking she threw off the covers and snuck down the hall to the wall which was hidden from the kitchen. Glancing over the small wall she saw her worst fears.
Someone was here!
Standing over her stove was a young handsome man with a nice square jaw and a mop of black hair. He was in the middle of making a set of pancakes, all drippy and runny with butter and syrup. Willing up her courage she stepped out from her hiding place and confronted him.
“Just who are you and why are you in my house!” Jess screeched at him her voice trying to stay level despite her rage. The supposed burglar gave her a little smile and spread his arms.
“Jess! Remember me? Its Chance Burdock!” The man told her trying to calm the woman down a little as he explained himself. “If you're wondering what I'm doing here I'm making you breakfast!” He handed her the plate loaded with the fluffy pancakes and eggs. She looked at him then the plate then back to him. Chance where have I heard that name before. I knew I've seen him before, that time at the bowling alley.
Several years ago Jess had been out at the bowling alley for her sisters birthday party, she had taken a flight across the country. While she was enjoying the game something else was as well. She had met a boy and they had managed to have an enjoyable conversation. They had agreed to meet up the next day and chat some more but Jess had to return home and he had his own duties as well. They had not even exchanged phone numbers or anything. Was he stalking her? Did he use the internet? She had to find out.
“Well its nice to see you again Chance, but how the heck did you get to my apartment? Its not like you know where I live!” Jess continued. Chance nodded and spoke.
“I'm not really sure how to explain it, but that day I met you, I felt a connection that I couldn't explain and when we couldn't talk I was a little saddened but I got over it. Though something happened just a few hours ago. I somehow found myself here. I also felt like it was going to be a good time for breakfast for you too!” Chance
