Italians had a lot of weird words, wasn't bologna one of them?
"I'd like that," Maia beamed at him. She really was eager to learn. "Hm. Meatballs would be fun! Lets do that. Homemade?" She looked around. Hm. No meat in this aisle. Anyway, meat had to be kept cold or it made people sick. "What else do you put in spaghetti sauce?"

Toby nodded. "Sure. We can do homemade. Well. I hope we can." Cupcakes were going to take longer from scratch but there should be time to steal the oven in between. He didn't trust changing a meat-temperature for a cake-temperature.
"Sausage? Only if you want. Usually it's just tomato and seasoning. Maybe a little garlic. I can make the canned stuff taste good, don't worry." At least he was pretty sure he could.

Maia gave Toby a bright smile. "You pick the sauce then," She instructed. She gestured to the cans of sauce. "Is there one that tastes better than the others?" she asked. "Where do we get the meat for meat balls? Can we look for cupcake stuff next? How about ice cream? Or should we save that for last so it doesn't melt?"

Toby was inspecting the jars on the shelf when Maia went on a bit of a ramble. His eyes went wide and, when she was finished he shook his head to clear it and had happened to choose a sauce he thought would make a good easy base.
"Along the back wall, yes, and what was the last one?"
He hadn't seen her this excited yet. The poor thing was losing her mind!

"Should we pick out ice cream or wait?" Maia repeated. "Do we need cheese? For the spaghetti?" Dried cheese wasn't it? And white? She looked for a canister of it. She found one on a shelf near the sauces and offered it to Toby.
"Come on, we have a whole store to see."

"Oh. No. We'll do that last so it doesn't sit for too long." Then she was at it again. Cheese? Another aisle? She was half driving him insane and half amusing him to no end. It was a bit of a confusion combination.
"Cheese? Do you--? Oh. Parmesan. Okay." He was sure they could use a new one anyway. "Breathe, Maia," he said, grinning widely, "We have all the time in the world. Come on. We don't want to miss anything."

All the time in the world? Maia took a deep breath as suggested, paused, and frowned slightly. No, they didn't. Dari needed them home by a decent hour: she really didn't like leaving him alone so long. Had it been long enough to call him without looking like a worry wart?
Probably not. They'd only been in three aisles. "Right," She said. "What else do you want?"

Toby reached out and gave Maia's back a little comforting rub. it was all going to be fine. He was still smiling at least.
"Well, let's just go through and get things as we go, alright? We'll be gone an hour max, it's going to be fine."

"I don't like leaving Dari out. Next time let's go somewhere he'd like to go," Maia requested. She walked down the aisle, glancing back at Toby. How were they supposed to see everything in an hour?
"Which aisle is next?"

"He's fine. It's unfortunate that he can't go everywhere, but he picks and chooses. It's been this way since he arrived. Actually, it's gotten better since he arrived." He avoided using the word 'landed,' just in case.
"Uh. I'm not sure. Whatever aisle is next?"
The trek continued. They traveled up and down every aisle, Toby stopping here and there to ask Maia if she was interested in this or that. He enjoyed explaining different foods to her as well.
Then they were coming close. Dreadfully close. The candy aisle. Rather than warn Maia, he stopped at the end cap of the aisle before it and paused.
"Okay, Maia. Are you ready?" For what, he didn't say.

Maia still wasn't entirely convinced. Dari had helped her when she'd needed someone, she wanted to help him too if he needed it. She didn't like the idea that one of her friends might be lonely.
By this time, Maia was thoroughly enjoying herself. Toby had even stopped to explain New foods to her as they browsed. "Ready!" she assured him. For what, She wondered. Whatever it was, it'd be fun!

"I want you to imagine... all the colors of the rainbow." Toby was being dramatic, making the motion of a rainbow with his hands, "...and lots and lots of brown as well." His voice had taken on the whimsical tone of a person wanting to draw a person in to some fantastical venture. "Blue sharks, pink beans, sticks of chunky brown stuff..." He stopped then, letting a suspenseful silence build, and then suddenly straightened and dropped back into his usual manner.
"Okay, let's go." Nearest them were the candies that hung in bags, some generic and others brand-name. Next to that, the candy in boxes, then the chocolate bars, and then the large bags. So many bags of tiny candy bars and Starbursts and marshmallow, whatever they could want. It was an entire aisle dedicated to sugary sweets.

Toby's antics were amusing; he had Maia giggling before they stepped into the aisle. She followed him and stopped; everything Toby had said appeared to be true! Her eyes widened and she did a 360 on the spot. She looked to Toby. How would she possibly decide? There were so many things she'd never seen before.
"...Just two?" she asked.

Toby nodded. "Just two. We'll be back, though. You can get something different next week." He didn't want anyone sugar-overdosing, staying up all night or anything like it. It was just as hard for Maia as it was to him to gain weight, at least presumably so, but that didn't mean it was healthy. A human form could still be made ill in some ways.
"Go ahead. Frolic."

Maia considered that. Well, if they got two things every week, she supposed she would be able to try everything within a bazillion weeks. "Alright. Two things," She agreed, reluctantly. After seeing the aisle she had forgotten her plan to get one thing per week. No, no. That definitely wasn't happening.
She darted about the aisle, picking up candy, studying it, shaking boxes, looking into the clear bags. She picked up a large bag of Swedish fish and put them into the cart before looking for more.
