"Sure, I'll pick a few up," Toby nodded. Salads were gross, but vegetables done right were great. He liked to think he could do them right. While he busied himself there, though, Maia was suddenly distracted by grapes, though.
"No those are--" he paused, hands still twisting the neck of a bag of small zucchini. "Well. I guess technically they are berries. Probably. They're grapes, though. The red ones are sweeter. I prefer the green ones myself."

Maia selected a bag of green grapes and put them into Toby's cart. "We have enough sweet fruit," she said. "Pick out things you like, too," Yesterday may have been for her, but today was for both of them. They needed to select enough food to last them a week. Until next weekend! "What else do we need?"

"That depends on what you want to eat the next few days. We can pick up some meat or fish. Do you still want to try spaghetti? We could do that."
Why did she think he wasn't picking things for himself? He wasn't going to neglect his diet just because Maia wanted some grapes.
"We can just go up every aisle, it's not a big deal. Maybe you can pick some cereal or something? Come on." He put his hands back on the cart and started toward the next aisle. He had been coming here for years, he knew the place by heart. Maia, though, had apparently never been to the supermarket. Ever.

"Meat or fish would be good. Yes! I want to try spaghetti," she gave him a smile. He'd remembered! "We could put meet it in and everything. I don't know what else would go in it, though..." She followed him to the next aisle, still puzzling. "Cereal?" she asked. Huh. "Alright."
She picked up a brightly colored box that promised equally as brightly colored cereal within. "This looks good," she mused.

Toby laughed slightly. Meat or fish. Yes. Those were their only choices unless someone wanted to make tofu. He'd just have to think about it. They could pick up the meat on the way out. He generally just ate leftovers for a day more but wasn't sure how keen Maia would be on the idea.
He smiled back at her when she turned to him and then turned to look down the cereal aisle. At least he wasn't eating digestive biscuits or drinking prune juice or anything. He eyed the box and smiled.
"That's a good choice." He'd only had them a few times considering he had been in his twenties when Froot Loops first came out, but lately he found he didn't really care how adult he was being. Most things from his childhood had just changed slightly over the years when it came to cereal. It was reassuring, like he hadn't aged out of the world yet.

Maia set the box in the cart, looking around. "I wish Dari could try all these things without having to blow up like a balloon," she mused aloud. She didn't see any other cereals that particularly interested her. Some were strange shaped, some showed milk changing different colors, and several had strange characters on the box.
Human advertising baffled her.
"Hey Toby, how about this?" She held up a box of oatmeal.

"Well, he doesn't 'blow up' really, he just gets infinitesimally bigger. If there's nothing in it that's good for him it's only extra size. I mean, he can drain, but it always freaks me out a little. I remember when he was little enough to hold him in my hand, but nobody wanted to because he'd already eaten a hole in the metal table." Somehow, even that sounded fond.
"Oh! No, we have some of that, if apple-cinnamon sounds good to you. If you want the plain stuff or some other flavor, though, we can buy some."

Maia considered this, but she frowned. "So what's good for him?" she asked. "Let's find something he can eat." She paused, looking at him. "We could make him a milkshake. He liked the one we got at the mall."
Apple cinnamon sounded much better than plan. She set It down where she'd found it. "Lets go find more things."

"I'm not sure. If you hand him something he can tell if it'd be good but can't tell you why. It might be some more of that fourth-dimensional crap or something about his other senses. Then some things he just likes, and will eat them every so often. Ice cream being one of them," Toby replied, "but he says he has no sense of taste, so who knows?"
Even with this odd sort of conversation, nobody seemed to be listening in. If they were they'd only hear ridiculous ranting anyway. People tried to keep to their own business nowadays and that was fine by him.
"Sure. Next aisle..." He rounded the corner cautiously and, seeing no one, lunged into the next lane and stopped suddenly. "Alright, good to go." Then he was back to normal, done fooling around and walking at a normal speed.

Asia planned to hand Dari everything they had bought in hopes of finding something good for the alien. "I don't think we'll ever understand that dimension," she said. "But if things make him happily, I'll occasionally buy him them." Like ice cream.
Toby's antics had Maia grinning. She followed him. "Do that again," She said, beaming. "What would you like in this aisle?"

"No, I don't think so either. It doesn't really matter, though. He's just fine the way he is."
After his shenanigans, Toby just grinned and gave a little laugh. "I don't know if I can, this place is pretty packed." Of course this particular aisle was nearly empty, but that didn't mean they all were. He looked up and down the shelves. Beans and rice and... a-ha!
Toby put his foot on the bottom brace of the cart and pushed off, leaning forward to ride it like a scooter until he reached the pasta, at which point he dragged his foot to stop. The only other woman in the aisle looked at him with wide eyes. He ignored her.
"Spaghetti, Maia."

Maia agreed. Dari was perfect the way he was.
She watched him take off on the cart like it was a scooter and giggled, shaking her head at him. He was a man of many talents, wasn't he? She followed him to the pasta. She took a box of the long straight noodles and placed them into the cart.
"I'm looking forward to making this with you."

Toby grinned, watching the box make it into the cart.
"Have you seen spaghetti before or was that just a lucky guess?" he half-teased. Partially he was honestly curious. Had she been able to read it, or had she just known what pasta would become cooked spaghetti? She must have seen it, right? On a plate somewhere. It wasn't like the shape changed drastically.

"I've seen pictures. Its long and bendy. This is dry and straight but noodles are always dry before you cook them," Maia explained. "Its spelled like it sounds, too, except for the h." Not like bologna. "Will the sauce be in this aisle too?"

Toby nodded. "Right. It's an Italian word. Most of them are, actually... except those. 'Pinwheels.' I'm sure some others too." He looked over the great wall of pasta but couldn't find any more.
"The sauce should be down a bit further. Some day soon I'll teach you how to make tomato sauce, but if you want this tonight we should probably get canned. Do you want anything with it? Meatballs or something?"
