He nodded, once again looking more like an Oxford professor discussing a particularly interesting piece of literature by the minute.
Emma took a sip of wine, looking into the glass like it contained the meaning of life.

Question hadn't told anyone this much about his adaptation factor before. "I'm not sure why it happens. It could be anything from genetic alteration to being possessed by the ghost of Charles Darwin. The only being who truly understood this ability was Exodus, and he agreed that it would be better off if he was removed... Hold on." His cell phone was buzzing. "Yes?... Oh great. I'm leaving now." He hung up his phone and stood up, paying for the drinks. "Dimensional Gateway on the verge of malfunctioning again." With that and a farewell, he left the tavern.

Noticing Gallon's gaze piercing through Vii, he sat up reflexively, though much taller than he should had he been right and not so completely wrong. When the curiosity turned to disgust, Vii couldn't help but burst into tears. The horrible reddish tears that left bloodstains in stark contrast to his pearly white skin. Knocking over the table again in the vampire's swift departure, Vii was in the sanctuary of their apartment before the happy couple could turn their heads that direction. ★★★★★★★

Emma made her way into the tavern with shadow trailing behind her like a hunting dog following its mistress.
She pulled up a seat at the bar and busied herself with a small enchantment. Violet light blossomed between her hands, forming itself into a complex web.

"Oh, Hey Emma," Zach looked up from her booth. Apparently she had spent the night. The drink that Question had bought for her was sitting empty on the table.
"I, uh, want to apologise," she said nervously. "If Ivan did anything bad, I'm sorry. I couldn't do anything to stop him... I'm so sorry."

Emma looked up, the shadows curling around her ankles. "No need to apologize, he didn't do anything that merits such a thing."
She had no intention of letting him do anything either.

"He didn't?" Zach was surprised. "Really? Nothing? Wow..."
She hadn't expected Ivan to just sit back and do nothing while he was in control. What she had expected was violence and blood and possibly a corpse. She was just glad that he hadn't bothered looking for Rei...

"He certainly tried, but he was smart enough not to press me further."
He had challenged her on her home turf, not a brilliant idea in itself.

"Wait, he tried? Tried to attack you?"
Zach was silent for a moment before bursting out into laughter.
"Man, even I'm not dumb enough to provoke you. And he nearly did? Wooow. What, did he try and attack you in the library? That would have been really stupid."

"Just outside of the library, in fact. He did not enter. Another wise decision, the wards would have done something nasty."
Emma gave a predatory smile, the shadows now winding themselves in with her hair.

The Wandering Ronin walks into the tavern as he looks around not liking the vibe within the tavern itself. he took a couple steps to the bar as he ordered some tea as he sat near the fire place inside the tavern to keep warm from the freezing weather in the dome.

"I'm glad he didn't," Zach smiled nervously. "I can't even imagine what that could have done to my body... you've got all kinds of anti-evil wards and spells, right? I can always feel it in my arm when I enter. I guess the only reason it wasn't blown off or something is because he isn't in control..."

"Not anti-evil, but more anti-hostility." Had they been anti-evil Emma herself wouldn't be able to enter the library without suffering severe burns.
Nor would the original and primary owner of the library.
"I believe the wards are set to transfiguration at the moment. You would have spent about twenty minutes as a mouse."

"As a mouse," Zach repeated and thought about it for a moment. If Ivan had attacked Emma then he would have been a very angry mouse. Odds were that he would have tried to bite Emma out of sheer spite and rage. This led Zach to wonder what would happen then.

The most likely outcome would have been Ivan's being changed back and hauled off into the dungeons for further interrogation.
Emma had a few centuries of experience with getting information, and would have given him two choices: answer her questions truthfully (she would know if he lied) or she would take the information directly from his mind.
"It could be worse. Last week it was set to instant incineration."
