Maia smirked. "There's no kraken in Oregon, if you wondered," she said. "But loads of people talk about one in the bermuda triangle, no idea what that is. And there are giant squids, but not nearly as big as people seem to think they are, at least as far as I've seen. They live in the midnight zone, though." And she'd never go there. Far too deep, far too dark, and creepy glowing fish lived down there. Or so she'd heard.
Dari wasn't far from wrong. As soon as they neared the cave, an enormous creature appeared; seemingly with endless rows of teeth. Maia said nothing, but she'd stiffened and her arms had wrapped themselves around Toby's nearest arm.

"Ah." Yes, people liked to talk about the Bermuda Triangle a lot. Unfortunately there was actually nothing there but a reasonable amount of sunken ships. Sometimes it was best to not dash out everyone's dreams, though. Life got rough when that happened. Interesting that she should call it 'the midnight zone' though. He'd only ever heard that officially.
Dari would be willing to bet they were supposed to find weapons before they came here. Maia tensed and grabbed at Toby.
"Alright, out we go," Toby said, wheeling his diver around. The monster nipped at his heels and he took Maia's controller instead, choosing to get her out and safe rather than himself. It was just a game to him, but they knew games were capable of freaking Maia out quite a bit.

Maia was a bit more freaked out when Toby abandoned his diver to rescue hers. She released her hold on him, grabbing for his controller, attempting to make a quick rescue. "No, stupid," she scolded him. "You don't die for me!" Maybe it was too late to save the scuba diver, Toby's health was low.
Ugh. She handed him back his controller. "Don't do that again. The sea monster's in there and that fish is blocking our way. Go find a way to kill it or something."

Toby's character had died. He didn't mind much. Instead he laughed at Maia's mood and shook his head. "I don't think it's in there."
"Maybe we should stop," Dari suggested, and once again the partners shared a glance.
"So it's okay to kill it if you're afraid of it, but it's not okay to kill it if you're not?" Toby asked, taking his controller up again to reset his character. "I don't know if there's a way to. Maybe there's a base to find? It's not following us, is it?"
Dari shook his head. "No."

Maia turned her gaze to Dari. "We're not stopping," she said firmly. "Unless you're scared. You're not scared, are you Dari?" Her expression softened slightly. It was possible that he dealt with fae, ghosts and all sorts of things, but was frightened by the things that lurked underwater.
"It's okay to kill it if it's a bad guy," Maia corrected, glancing at Toby. She was still irritated that he'd gone and died to rescue her character. "There must be another way inside. Let's go find it."

"No, I'm not scared," Dari responded, shaking his head. Maia seemed like she was interested now at the very least.
Toby shook his head, still grinning. She had been so profound earlier, all of that stuff about humanity mimicking humanity. Now she was telling him that the 'bad guys' and the 'good guys' were black and white.
"If someone tried to break into my house, I probably wouldn't be very happy about it either," he said. His character had resurrected with a full bar of... whatever. Energy. Something. They weren't labeled. "Alright. We'll go looking."
At least Maia seemed invested in the game now. She wanted to find the 'good guy' she was sure was at the bottom of the cave. What a dangerous way of thinking.

"I was scared," Maia admitted. "I thought it was going to eat all of us." And the boo factor, that hadn't helped either. And probably the sleepiness.
"It's not very nice to eat people, even if they are breaking into your house," Maia protested. "Once, when I swam too far off the beach, this whale came after me! I thought I was toast. But I swam closer to shore and it stopped following."

There was plenty to be said, but Toby didn't feel particularly like getting into an argument tonight. He bit his tongue and nodded. "It's just a game, though, keep that in mind." Movies were probably scary for her too. Who hadn't believed the baddie was going to get them as a kid?
The group continued, until suddenly Dari said: "Look."
Nothing. Toby saw nothing. "What?"
"Look. Right there."
"Where?"
Then it rose into view. It was a big structure, almost definitely some sort of base camp build of metal and transparent domes. If there was going to be a way to kill the fish, it would be here. Either that or mermaids, who knew?
"Should we go?" he asked, turning to Maia.

"I know. In games you can die more than once," she gave Toby a small smile. Now that the fright had passed, the sleepiness was returning. "Kay, let's go," she muttered, leaning against the blonde agent. "Maybe we'll find a way to distract that fish, or something." She was drifting.
"Think mermaids?" she suggested, sleepily. Maybe it was their basecamp.

Although that was a sentence by New England's standards it wasn't quite what the rest of the world expected. Toby chuckled again and looked down to Maia, craning his neck to see. "Maybe we should just call it a night." It wasn't like they were close enough for this to be normal.
"Oh?" Dari said, and then turned his attention from the game to Maia. Ah. "Yes, maybe we should."

Maia made a sound of protest, but set her controller down. She straightened, stood, and gave each of the boys a hug. "Let's play more tomorrow," she said. After shopping, making cupcakes and all that fun stuff. She moved out of the way of the television and paused. She wanted to thank them for a good day, but she wasn't sure how to word it. Maybe she'd decide in the morning.
"Goodnight," she said instead, wandering upstairs.

At least her retreat was slightly less hasty this time. Each man gave her a hug and wished her a good night as she left. The boys remained to put the console away, power down, and go to bed themselves. Or, as it usually was for Dari, amuse himself until morning. Toby showered and brushed his teeth first, made sure Dari was alright, and then went upstairs himself. He found it very little trouble at all to fall asleep.

Several hours passed, until a loud clash from outside sounded and a flash moved across the sky. From Maia's room there was a sound of sleepy displeasure, and then shuffling as another clash sounded. The selkie had wandered into Toby's room and laid herself ontop of the man's blankets. She gave a shiver.
BOOM! Thunder came again, and she bit her lip. She didn't want to wake Toby. Stupid storm. She'd been sound asleep until it'd started.

It would have been difficult for anyone to sneak into Toby's room without waking him. He was a light sleeper prone to rising at the sound of anything unnatural. Storms, for that matter, didn't wake him, but footsteps and pressure beside him certainly did.
"Mmh? Hm?" was about as intelligible as the man could make himself at the moment. He breathed deep and rubbed an eye with his finger. Dari? No. Not Dari. Toby tried to blink the sleep from his eyes and barely propped himself up on his forearms.
"Maia?" That was better. "You okay?" His voice was deep and clouded with sleep but he was trying his best. He felt safe here, he didn't figure it was any imminent danger, but Maia was clearly upset regardless.

Oh. She'd woken him up. She scooted off the bed with an apologetic glance. "Sorry," she said. She'd go downstairs, where Dari was--another clash had her stiffening, wrapping her arms around herself. "I'm okay," she lied. Fine, fine, she was fine. They were inside. There was nothing to be afrai--she watched a lightening strike through the window. Nope. She wasn't fine.
"I hate storms."
