Are you sure? I know Raveners take the checks but Lictors and Carnies are Fearless. Doesn't that mean they automatically pass?

No. Because it's a Leadership check, not a Morale check.

Does anyone else believe that the Tyranid consumed one of the surviving Old Ones?

I rather hope not. I like having a threat that has nothing to do with the Old Ones. As it is, alot of the threats come down to "Old Ones did it" or "C'tan did it."

I like their extra galactic origin and the fact tthat they are not only complete aliens to our galaxy but also completely uncaring for the struggles currently occurring in the 40k continuity.

Quote:
Possible? It's also possible they consumed the Outsider, one of the C'tan.
Good point, I need to rething my theories.
That one is definitely impossible. Diagrams of Hive Fleet movements show them deliberately avoiding the Dyson Sphere that is reported to contain the Outsider.

And even if they did encounter him... C'tan are freefloating clouds of energy. How would they consume him?

Devourgaunts are devilgaunts, carnies and lictors dont test, hormagaunts leap 12 for assault, ctan cant be "consumed" by tyranid, infact they leave each other alone, theres no point in them fighting eachother

hello,
After assembling my army, I find I have a spare carnifex
I was going to make an alpha ravener, but decided against it.
my points are fairly well secure at 1500, so I am wondering..
if you could assemble a carnifex, what would you outift with?
I was thinking either a melee beast, with regen, crushing claws, scything talons, tusked, bonded exoskeleton, reinforced chitin, extended carapace, flesh hooks, and bio plasma.
or a shootyfex, with dual devourers, enhanced senses, extended carapace, and whatever else nifty doo dads catch my eye.
anyone have some suggestions?

Do a Screamer-Killer

I like that idea.
and if you could do a shooting carnifex, what would you go Lt. Brookman?
Or anyone else for that matter!

I'm visual styles only, I'm not a Nid expert. If I were to buy a Carnifex I'd build it as a Screamer-Killer because that is the one that so fondly spring to my mind all the time.

Ah, I see.
I completely understand what you mean Brookman, it's just I am trying to go both ways, and it really doesn't work well.
I guess I need to decide whether it'll be gamey or artsy. cry
Hard choice really.

Personally I'd say go with what you like best. The hobby is first and foremost about what models you like best and how they look.

Carnifex:
Scything talons x2, bio plasma.
I agree with you Lt. Brookman, it is rather good and iconic, not a bad unit either!
Thank you for the prodding!

I want to run 3 Carnifex as Elite choices, what are the best biomorphs and weapons for Elite Carnifexs?

I was thinking Carnifex with two sets of Scything Talons which leaves me 13 points for Implant Attack and Tail Weapon - Mace.

A question on the history of Tyranids now. What caused the giant gaps in the history of Tyranid invasions?

The Tyranids were first found in M35 and M36 on a few planets as very basic swarms. In late M38 the Tyranid Zoats, the slaves, arrived fleeing their masters. Then the first major Hive Fleet didn't arrive until 745.M41.

How come there is a 2 thousand year gap between the first Tyranids and the Zoats, then anouther 3 thousand year gap between the Zoats and the first Hive Fleet.

The only theory I can think of is several small scouting hives left their original, or last, galaxy in search of new worlds and they arrived in M35 and sent off a signal the Hive Mind picked up and started there 6 thousand year journey. This doesn't explain how the Zoats made it there 3 thousand years earlier unless for some reason there ships are twice as fast and they act as a Trojan Horse to infiltrate the galaxy before the main invasion.

to my knowledge, it's about that exact reason.
the codex is rather vague..what in 40K canon isn't? ( rolleyes )
That pretty much fits their mindset anyways.
As for your Carnifex issue?
I can only give opinion, not experience. Because I don't think i've played enough games to give experience. xp
After some time considering it, the tail upgrades seem..weak. at least in small point games. I have learned the hard way that it is better to sqeeze out a few points and have a more complimentary and cohesive/fluid force, full of numbers; than it is to have a few overpowered models, with some necessaries left in the dust.
Example: I did have the scythe tail on my melee and gun-fex.
my warriors couldn't catch up with their gaunts they were to be sitting...
So, gave them leaping and toxin, gave gaunts toxin, dropped both tails, and and dropped scyhtes on my genestealers. It works a grand bit better!

I've tested built up against swarm and swarm die to easily. The tail adds upto 3 attacks against a swarm which you'll be fighting after you've had to stop to kill a tank.

why not have a bio titan with a crap ton of spore mines to surround it or have a conversion of the brain crab (look for it in the old citidel journals)
