I wouldn't go so far as to say darker, unless the previously held notion was of a bright and sunny world. There's a relatively clear balance and randomness when you take a step back.

Four days ago, at 5:15 local time, my stepfather left his body behind. He was a good, kind, and intelligent man. Cancer stole him from this world and from my mother. The world is just a fraction darker without him around. His mirth, and innate goodness will be missed by those that know him for the rest of their days.
