Faust followed Lataru, unpacking his emergency medical supplies as he ran. How many times had he been through this, some little life fading away, him doing all he could... and it still not being enough?

*netsubo set the crystal down...she drew strange symbols around it, then began to chant...as she did, she took a knife and cut her hand....she let the blood drip onto the crystal...the blood droplets vanished when they hit the stone, almost as if being absorbed...the crystal began to glow with a crimson light..it was almost time to heal...*

Faust came to the alley, where Lataru hovered uncertainly. "This is it! They've really overdone the protection aspect, haven't they?" he paused, running his hand over the crackling forcefield. It slipped through, the field giving like water. "I think," Faust said, "That since I come bearing no ill intentions, it will let me through."

Faust took in the scene: A sick child in no proper conditions, and Netsubo slicing open her own hand. Oh, and Hao, of course. In all his threatening innocence.
"There's an easier way to do this," Faust said, setting his medical case cautiously on the floor. "What your doing seems somewhat medieval... I'm a doctor, and this child is very sick. Please let me take a look."

Faust blanched. Being at the receiving end of a glare from Hao didn't rank high on his list of endorphin-releasing stimuli. But he didn't particularly like the color that Netsubo's skin was taking on. And there seemed to be something... fractured... about the aura of the crystal.
"Netsubo, there's a crack," he pointed out. "It's miniscule, but I think it's effecting the mineral's potency. There's a reason I felt a need to come. Your aura, and the child's, seem to be fading." Faust's gaze flickered nervously to the floor; Hao was still looking at him as if he were an unsightly stain on the wall.

Faust wondered if something was wrong with his sixth sense. Why didn't Hao and Netsubo feel the fractured aura? Was Opacho going to die? Was he interfering, or would not interfering be the worst thing he could do for them?
Hao was continuing to glare, and his message was plain. Leave! Initially, Faust was going to. But he was a doctor, and trusted his instincts. "I heard her," he retorted to Hao. "Didn't you? She's disoriented! You'll be in a fine mess if your healer passes out before she finishes the job, won't you? Not to mention the child!" Drawing himself to his full height, he found himself becoming angrier at Hao's attitude. "Opacho's life is in your hands! Regardless of where his loyalties lie, I feel a duty to protect him, since you seem incapable!"

Shizuka waited nearby and just out of view from the others. Why was he trying so hard to save someone working with Hao? In her conlicting mind, she discovered that she would have done the same thing. but only because her friend's life was on the line too. Her mind still argued with itself whether or not to go in as well.

Faust's mind raced. What could he do? Did he trust his experience more than he trusted Hao's confident assurance that Opacho would be all right? Of course he did. He couldn't let another child die, and that included Netsubo.
"Daddy, Daddy, do you know that ants can carry one hundred times their own weight?"
"Of course, Liebchen! They're like you, very strong..."
"But I'll die, won't I?"
Faust stared in horror at the tiny, pale girl. She took mostly after her mother, but she had his eyes. "Who told you that, Marie?"
"I read my chart, Daddy. I get worse every day."
Faust gathered the little girl into a tight embrace, kissing the top of her blond head fiercely. "I won't let you die," he promised. "Just like Mommy, you'll grow up big and strong. I'll find a way."
"I trust you, Daddy."

"NO!" Faust cried, stepping forward. "Please, don't do it! I don't want to intervene, but I've seen this once before. The conditions are wrong, and they'll both die if she proceeds! Hear me out... I resorted to this kind of healing, once, and it destroyed my life."
