It also occurred to Lin right at that comment that Aethos might not have had much of a childhood neither. She smiled a bit looking up at the sky.
"Actually your weather is quite mild here compared to other places we've been to."
She couldn't recall if there had been any cases of extreme weather conditions during their last stay here.

Aethos looked over at Lin, his brow furrowed slightly. "Oh?"
Earendil smiled. "I think she means how the weather is just nicer here in general than where we're from. In the Borderlands, the snow can get as deep as a house sometimes, and in the summer there are storms that can tear buildings apart and uproot trees. But we didn't see any of that when we were here."
Aethos blinked. "Are you sure Melkor isn't still around somewhere in your land?" he asked dubiously. "I mean, that sounds like his handiwork ..."

Lin chuckled at that, she could kind of see why, "Don't get us wrong. It's not terrible to live in the Borderlands, people have learned to adapt and live where they are peacefully. No place is perfect, Naros has perfect tropical weather, it's always really warm there, but they get heavy rains for once a year for a few months. Southland and Eastland do not have snow or those type of storms found in the Borderlands, but they're desert territory so they do get sandstorms every once in a while, and it is quite hot there. Though the Southland doesn't always have a desert they get a forest on a roughly thousand year cycle, which I'd like to see..."
She added this because it was true she would like to see this one day and she had the life span to do so.
"The only place I don't know about weather wise is the Westland and Human Southland," she glanced at Earendil, even though they hadn't traveled through these areas she was sure he would have heard about these places.

"I think they're more like this place," Earendil commented. "They're very mild in their weather. Snow in the winter, sun and gentle storms in the summer. Spring and autumn are pleasant as well, or so I'm told."
He smiled as they arrived at the gate of the city, though he was a little disappointed by how stiff and formal the guards remained when they saw that Aethos was with them.

Lin waved at the guards, hoping they would ease up a bit. It wouldn't do for them to be so stiff around Aethos.
Even Miyuki noticed something was different about the guards as she stared at them for a moment before skipping ahead again. She thought they were being strange.

The guards' eyes flickered towards Lin, but they made no move to acknowledge her wave. There was fear in their eyes, fear of Aethos. He had not taken an active part in the ruling of the country since Aerin had come, but their memories were fresh with the way he had treated his men: much the same as his father had done.
Earendil hurried to usher Aethos into the city, hoping that the prince wouldn't become discouraged and simply return to the castle before even seeing anything.
Aethos wasn't watching the guards though: he was looking at Lin, his expression confused. "Why did you wave to them?" he asked curiously.

Lin blinked back equally confused, she always had been liked that to the guards. Even if the ones in the hallways of the Southland palace couldn't wave back at the moment.
"To say hello of course, even if they can't say hello back because they're on duty it's good to say hello to other people, because at the end of the day they are people."

"At the end of the day, sure," Aethos replied, "but while they're on duty, they're on duty. They're not supposed to be talking to anyone, interacting with anyone. It distracts them from doing their jobs. They're supposed to be watching people without bias or distraction."
Earendil couldn't help but stare at the prince. His greatgrandmother had never ever said anything like that, not even about the guards that were scattered throughout the palace. Even his father had more respect for people than that ... and that was saying something.

"It doesn't mean I can't wave at them and acknowledge they are there, and for a good soldier it wouldn't distract them from their job."
She smiled fondly of a memory she had held from her childhood.
"I remember when I use to try and follow Prince Ruel as a child... and he would always hand me off to one of the guards in the hallway. They were always nice and answered my questions like why they weren't bored from standing there all day and I got to nap in their hand... never the same guard of course because of the shift changes but it was nice to know them."
Snapping out of it she then added to Aethos.
"Besides they're guards not garden statues, waving hello and showing common courtesy won't cause the end of the world."

"But you're distracting them from doing their jobs properly," Aethos replied. "That is the point."
Earendil put one hand on the prince's shoulder and gripped it tightly. "Calm yourself, friend," he murmured. "We are spending an afternoon relaxing. Lin, was there somewhere in particular that you wanted to see? Or anyone you remember that you would like to see again?"

She was glad her father was not here, he would have laughed his a** off that there was something who has a bigger stick than he ever had.
"Let's visit the shops we did on our very first trip here," Lin suggested.
Or rather the people, like the little boy who probably wasn't little anymore. It wasn't like she needed anything, but if she recalled they visited the leather shop and the goldsmith on their first visit.

"Sounds like a plan," Earendil smiled. "I can't quite recall which they were exactly, so perhaps just visit them as we pass them?"
It made the most sense to him. The first would be that leather shop then, the tannery.
Aethos continued walking with them, though he was shaking his head incredulously. "Visiting shops randomly?" he questioned. "What is the point of that?"

It was funny how Lin could pity someone just for not having a life. It made her sort of want to grab the man and drag him on a fun fill day of mindless wandering. Not that they weren't doing that already.
"To see what people have, to see the people there, to just see things," Lin replied, "Earendil and I, technically don't need anything, but you never know what you'll find. Especially from those who create finished goods."

Aethos shook his head incredulously. "I don't understand it," he murmured, "but if that is what you say ..."
And after all he had agreed to go with them, and he was a man of his word.
When the arrived at the tannery, Earendil held the door open for them, allowing the others to go in first, and only then did he follow after them.
"Good afternoon!" the shopkeeper greeted them from behind the counter. There was a brief pause as it registered just who his customers were today, and then he bowed his head respectfully. "Aethos-sola, welcome," he murmured.
Aethos didn't reply, but simply started looking around the shop, not entirely sure what he was supposed to be looking at.
Earendil sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. Aethos was going to be a difficult puzzle to solves, that was for sure. Then he smiled at the youth behind the counter. "Hello."
The youth blinked at Earendil, then tilted his head slightly. "I remember you," he murmured. "You were here those years ago ... weren't you?"
Earendil grinned. "Artemis, right? You've grown up quite well, I can see."
The youth appeared about fourteen or fifteen years old now, very nearly an adult, and he had indeed grown up quite handsomely. His hair, as fiery as was normal for his race, was cut somewhat short, and spiked out from his head in just about every possible direction. Gone were the freckles from his childhood, and his skin had been well tanned either from the sun or from his work - or both.

"Artemis, it's good to see you again," Lin smiled at the youth.
Yes, he certainly wasn't a little boy anymore. She felt Miyuki clinging to her backside, and Lin couldn't recall herself being this shy. Nudging Miyuki she told the girl to say hello.
Miyuki blinked at the boy, "Hello."
