I was a rather dark guy back in high school. Not emo, more nerd in appearance, but still preferred the dark.

Alexander Magnus "The pessimistic man is never disappointed." Such was my motto in high school. And it's true! I always figured that if you always expect the worst to happen, you'll never be let down when bad things come your way. I try to explain that to other people, but it doesn't work out too well >.<

Try explaining it as you can be "pleasantly surprised when you are wrong" to explain when the bad don't happen.

Alexander Magnus Try explaining it as you can be "pleasantly surprised when you are wrong" to explain when the bad don't happen. Ah, but a true pessimist can never be pleasantly surprised. Surprised momentarily perhaps, but it will only be a moment before they realize how even that surprise can go horribly awry. An optomist, on the other hand, can go hours, days, weeks...years...before their hopes are let down. If they're ever permenantly let down. And during that whole duration of time, they will experience more joy than a pessimist can ever hope to. D; I've heard that arguement of yours half a million times, and while I believe in always being preparedfor the worst, I'm not going to drag my feet, wallowing sullenly in the idea that something bad could happen sometimeeventuallymaybe. And then when the good things end with this "inevitable bad", and I'm let down, I can at least say that I truly enjoyed them while they lasted. ;D

Perhaps next time you can say that you are speaking of a pessimist, not a jerk. I mean, damn. That is really depressing.

Or you could out-do them by pointing out that nothing matters because good, bad, or indifferent, we are all going to be dead within a century and all we do will easily be forgotten as if we never were here, so trivial things don't matter and piss off.

Besides, experiencing joy isn't life's purpose.

^^^^ Sorry. n.n" But you were expecting to be depressed anyways, right? ;P
^^^Unless you get into the whole after-life gig...but that's not a debate that can be solidly defended. xD But that's the thing! The fact that we'll be dead in so short a time makes every moment matter more. If we had an eternity to do as we'd like, we could be lazy. But we only have around a century at most to do all we need/want to do...less if you take into account your physical failings towards later ages, or if your time is unexpectedly cut short. If you're short on money, you'll put more thought into exactly how you're going to spend it, right? So if you're short on life, shouldn't it follow that you put a great deal of thought into how you live it? Because trivial or no, nearly everything you do effects something or someone, and those little rippling changes can cause big ones over time.
Erm...have I offended? sad That wasn't my intention. I just figured that if you could point out the downside of being an optomist, I could do the same for pessimists. Now it seems that there are a whole bunch of tight-wound feelings over something I said while honestly just half goofing-off. confused
No really, what did I say? I've read and reread my post, and I still can't find anything that I wrote to put you down or be rude, and now here you are telling me to piss off.
^^Not just experiencing joy. Letting yourself go enough to just experience. I'm not saying that all your life should be devoted to the pursuit of pleasure. That would be shallow. I'm just saying that if you're given a cause for joy, why not take a moment to experience it, rather than smothering it immediately? Life's purpose...dare I ask? xD
^*turns into a purple duck* .....D: ?!?!

No offense was taken, just was depressing.

I suppose that's what I don't agree with in my view. I actually think the "all work and no play makes [blank] a dull boy/girl" is a good thing, though.
Then again, I'm not really a pessimist. I do experience joy and love it when it comes. Agreed, life isn't all about joy, but I just prefer/want/need less.

While that may be true. It has been proven that without a certain amount of fun, people have been known to get depressed, give up on life, even get sick. So my motto would probably be more like.. Life's a party, you can sit on the wall all damn night, or you can go out on the floor and dance your a** off.

Alex: Oh good. n.n" Haha, it's only depressing if you want to look at it like a lost cause. As a way of life or potential for change, it's not depressing a all. ;P
Yoder: Eh, each to his own then. :3 I personally like enough joy/fun to spice things up and give me something to chuckle over when life's at one of its duller points, and enough trouble to make the fun more valuable when it comes along. And then in between highs and lows, I'm fit to be content.
Magni: Is it safe to assume that's a typo on "isn't" and not "is"? <.<" I'll make that assumption and agree. Some kinds of "fun" are just idiotic and ill-placed.
Mirouni: But...I need my a**...D: *sits down protectively*
