"Bologna is an important word," Toby said as he retreated, "What if you didn't know it and accidentally ordered the mysterious, foreign-sounding meat at the deli?" Bologna was for kids, otherwise it was gross.
Dari laughed and watched her go. He just assumed she must have more preening to do. Humanoids had odd rituals for the morning. He didn't even need to brush his teeth, lacking saliva. He found said rituals interesting, but people often found it rude when he watched. Toby still let him watch human-things sometimes.

Maia hadn't brought much with her. Her pelt and the necessities she was given by the HQ, a change of clothes. She sighed. This place was so nice, especially compared to the apartment she had. She stepped out of her room. Oh well.
She had a phone to look forward to.

Toby brushed his teeth and did his hair, shaved and returned upstairs to dress. After all these years, formal attire felt normal. He wasn't sure why it was entirely necessary on federal grounds. It seemed silly. If they were going out in the field it wasn't a very good chance they'd be going in all-out Men in Black gear.
He caught Maia in the hall with all of her things gathered.
"Heeeeey..." His expression was furrowed and confused, "Watcha doin'? You goin' back to your apartment tonight?" That wasn't really what he'd expected.

"Getting ready to go," Maia said, blinking at him. "I made the bed, too. See?" She gestured to the bedroom. "Thank you for having me." She hugged him. When she got a place she'd have to invite him for a sleepover too.

"Oh! Okay." Toby's tone was bright but his expression clearly confused. He accepted the hug either way. "You know you don't have to, right?"

Maia's eyes went wide. "Really?" She managed. He was letting her stay? She went to the doorway of her room, tossing the stuff onto the bed and wrapping her arms around Toby. "Thank you!" She didn't have to go back to that awful apartment. Well, not to stay. She'd have to go back and get her stuff.

"Oh! More hugs, okay." He accepted the second hug as well and was smiling when it released. "Yeah, you... don't need to be there. I'll talk it over with the boss but I'm sure everything will be fine. I mean, you can stay as long as you need. I figured we could get the rest of your things today?"

"Thank you," she said again. No one had ever been so kind to her. "You won't get into trouble?" she asked. Her concern was all for Toby now; he was such a nice man, he didn't deserve to get into trouble. "You're the best. Yes! We can do that. After classes. When are you finished with work today?"

"Eh, not enough trouble to worry about," Toby replied with a shrug. He bent the rules shamelessly, but at his age you should just be able to, right? They were lucky he wasn't yelling at children to get off his lawn.

"Good. I don't want you in trouble because of me," she said. "Okay we'll meet at my apartment at six." She gave him a bright smile. "I'm going to go tell Dari!" She made her way downstairs. "Dari! Toby says I can stay with you guys!"

"Alright, sure." Toby then went into his room to dress for the day. He'd thought she'd be happy. Good. It felt like he'd done a good thing.
"Does he?" Dari asked, smiling. He knew what an entity sleeping over meant but he didn't want to steal her thunder. "You know, he did the same for me."

"He's the best." And she wouldn't have to back. She was so grateful. "How do I repay Toby for how kind he's been to me?" she asked. She didn't think any amount of shells or taffy would be enough. But maybe she could do something for him. She Sat down next to Dari to consider.

"He doesn't need anything material," Dari reassured her. If anyone knew Toby's true nature it would be his partner. Nobody spent quite so much time around him or got so close. "You being happy is all he works for." Because why else would he have taken in a boarder?

"I'm the happiest I've ever been. I get to live with my two friends!" Her best friends. For the first time in a long time, she would be with someone she cared about. She wouldn't be alone. "Maybe I should tell him how much this means to me. Do you think that'd make him happy?"

Dari grinned. Maia was clearly excited to be able to stay here. Not everyone would be so grateful, but the young woman seemed like she had trouble staying alone. So here she was. He was glad Toby had made this decision.
"It likely would," he said. It would probably also elicit a bit of awkwardness, which Dari found amusing. Then came the sound of Toby coming back down the stairs, now dressed sans jacket and ready to go.
