Amari had heard rumors lately, but wasn't sure they were accurate. Or even close to the truth. They hadn't come from headquarters, but from her parents. Apparently there was some kind of creature in Connecticut that stole souls. They'd heard about it while vacationing; the house was vacant, but people heard noises and voices coming from it regularly.
Apparently people were afraid to go near.
Amari went to Lori's office before she was due to start. "Is there an entity that can steal souls?" She asked, looking awkward.

"You don't know?" Lori asked. He was still rough on her from time to time, but she'd gotten much better at the whole brown-nosing things and they generally got along.
"We're not sure. We can't really define what a 'soul' really is. Why do you ask? Did someone find something?"

"My parents were in Connecticut," Amari began and took a seat. She wrote down an address and offered it to him. "Their hotel was near there and they said they heard voices and horrible noises. A few of the people in town said something lives there that steals souls. I don't know if it was their imagination or what. I've never heard of anything that could steal souls from the living."

Oh boy. Town legends. Here we go.
"Do you know anything else about it? What sort of building it is, if anyone lives there, what else happens other than sounds, if anything?" He'd have to call her parents if not. It was his duty to have such things investigated.

"They said the house was vacant. The power goes on and off but I don't know... It should've been turned off years ago, shouldn't it? Do they leave power on in vacant houses?" She asked, frowning slightly. "I guess people see children go in and never come out."

"Not usually," Lori admitted. He sighed and covered his face with a hand. Everyone believed in ghosts, but they were far more rare than people understood. That didn't mean it couldn't be something else, of course, but it was usually just urban legend.
"Alright. We'll have to check it out. Do you mind if I call your parents?" He could look their number up, but it was more polite to ask first.

Call her parents? Alright. "Go ahead," she said. "I don't know if any of its true," she added, "But I hope it's not a waste of time." That'd definitely make a bad impression. "Do you have an idea what creature it could be?"

"Three hundred percent chance everyone thinks it's a ghost or a demon, but we have no evidence of a hell and demons as people propose, and ghosts are far more rare than you think. Maybe one in thirty cases will be true, and maybe one out of every ten of those is anything worth worrying about."
He looked to the clock. It was a reasonable hour.
"Do you want to get on the line with me?" It was experience, right?

Oh. "I've heard a lot of ghost stories," Amari mused, and looked to Lori. "Dad loves stories, but he seemed sincere." She gave Lori her parents phone number. "Alright," she agreed.
Experience was experience.

He had Amari take up another phone and connected her to the call before dialing her parents' number.
He introduced himself, built a bit of trust, and then started with the questions.
- Is the house occupied?
- Have you ever seen it occupied?
- Do people really go in and not come out, as far as you know?
- Have any of the disappearances been solved?
- Have you ever seen anyone leaving the building?
- What sort of building is it?
- What are the specific legend associated with the house?
- Had anyone ever died in the house, as far as they knew?
- Was the house near any odd hills or the woods?
- Had it been condemned?
- How far is it from the main patch of town?
- Have you ever been near or inside yourself? (What was the experience like?)
- Do you believe in the legend?
- Why?
- Do you know of any primary sources? (People who have been inside, or claim to have been inside?)

The questions were quick, though one of them was discussed in rapid elvish. The one concerning whether people actually went in and never came out. They'd seen small children enter, in the two weeks they'd been there. Maybe once or twice a day.
But there were no missing persons reports.
Is the house occupied? No.
- Have you ever seen it occupied? No.
- Do people really go in and not come out, as far as you know? Yes. Witnessed several children entering, they never come out.
- Have any of the disappearances been solved? No.
- Have you ever seen anyone leaving the building? Never.
- What sort of building is it? An old run down house. Vacant.
- What are the specific legend associated with the house? That something is there--witnessed lights flashing and noise coming from house. Children went inside, didn't come out. Legend told to us doesn't say much aside from something lives in that house.
- Had anyone ever died in the house, as far as they knew? Don't know.
- Was the house near any odd hills or the woods? Near open fields and old buildings. No hills or woods.
- Had it been condemned? Yes.
- How far is it from the main patch of town? It's on the outskirts.
- Have you ever been near or inside yourself? (What was the experience like?) we vacationed for two weeks in a hotel near by and walked past it several times. Uncomfortable.
- Do you believe in the legend? Yes?
- Why? Experience
- Do you know of any primary sources? (People who have been inside, or claim to have been inside?) Owner of the house?
