Imani was a bit torn. He wanted to go into sports-watcher mode and start yelling at Eight. Things like, ‘What was that?! Aim! Aaaargh!’ But at the same time, he didn’t want to encourage the death of someone else. There was no common ground between himself and anyone else here, although the Gammas did look familiar. However… Killing each other for some piece of jewelry? What did they even do? You’d think they’d work like that immortality necklace from Survivor, but they seemed like they could make the wearer more vulnerable to attack. They probably didn’t actually accomplish anything. He’d much prefer taking his frustration out on Snuggie-man…

Oh well. To play his part, he kept close to Alpha Eight, ready to fend off any attacks.

"Yessir," Gamma Eight peeped, intimidated enough by her partner to listen to him, at least for the moment. Leaving him would make her an easy target, so it was best to just cover him for now.

The hooded figure's poking and prodding moved someone to stand beside Theta Nine. Oh, good, a familiar figure. "Tattoo," he greeted in return, but his mood quickly sobered as he realized what they were being asked to do. Especially what she and the other shields were asked -- oh, please, ordered would be more accurate -- to do. "I'll do my best. No point in doing anything less," he said in reply, obscurely proud that his voice was a great deal steadier than he felt. Whatever happened, he wouldn't let her die because he couldn't do his job properly.

He glanced across the playing field (killing field, more like, a treacherous thought told him) at Fedora off in the distance, a flutter of worry for the other member of their trio rising in his chest. A glare snapped across at the hooded figure who had taken all their medkits before he scanned all their potential opponents.

At least being the meatshield meant that he was saved the trouble of deciding which team to attack. He was vaguely aware of rubber bullets whizzing by his arm, but moving to defend his sword from the other attacker managed to take him out of range. No attack had actually landed yet, but he knew he couldn't count on his luck holding for the entire game. "Do what you have to," he whispered to Theta Two. Even if it meant putting himself right in harm's way, he was going to defend her.

[ Theta Two is attacking Zeta Seven! ]

Sorry.

Thats what they said before the attack. Sorry. Theta two's head wavered with questions, philosophical thoughts that hurt her brain to think. She tried to push them clumsily to the back of her mind, to think only of the present and the bullets now whirring past them, along with the badly aimed punch. Do you say sorry before you try to kill someone? Does it make you feel better about yourself? She thought, moving closer to Theta-nine. Oh, how she wished she was the shield, so that she could take all of the damage for him instead. Because it felt wrong to let him take the blows. It felt wrong to be the one to attack without even a lick of skill, when Thyme was the one paying for her mistakes. But there wasn't anything she could say now. The game had been set, the game she had decided to play. It was her fault for where she was now. But she didn't regret it. Not if it meant protecting Thyme.

You know thats not the full truth, She thought sharply to herself, mouth twisting wryly from within the mask. Theres a selfish part in there too.

Withdrawing Excalibur as Alpha Eight reeled past her, the girl might have worn a dry look on her face for a moment, even though it was terribly curious and almost expected that she would do the same. "I'm sorry to you too," She said, the words feeling heavy and tilted with regret. She didn't want to kill, but she would if she had to. She couldn't escape the savagery that the island brought, and what she loathed to become but would in the end if it meant saving the ones who'd held out their hands when she needed them the most. "I guess neither of us wants to do this, huh? But I cant let them die." She was lying again, lying for the sake of her morals. A great deal of it was the truth, but another part of her screamed that there was a part of her that wasn't doing this survival, and a part of her who was doing this for herself. She wondered briefly as she looked from Zeta Seven to Alpha Eight if she'd be better off using her fists, but at this point... well, she couldn't really tell. She wondered who to attack first, but the one with the gun seemed a bit more dangerous. And he had shot at Thyme. So with one last look to her partner, she said, "Keep me close, and wish me luck. I'll see you after this, alright?"

And then she moved, raising the stake to strike Zeta Seven. "No hard feelings either," She said, "but I dont plan on letting you kill him, cheri."

It was only the second time Gamma Eight had been hit, and she made a very sad noise at the pain. Still, though, she tried desperately to block the attack on her current partner, and caught a pretty heady splinter in the arm.

[Alpha Eight is attacking Theta Two]

As he stumbled past his intended target. He could feel a wave of embarrassment wash over him. Alpha Eight's nerves were already shot. His stomach tightly woven into knots and his knees on the verge of shaking. Nothing like completely missing to boost one's ego. Nothing like it. He hadn't the feeling of inexperience. The feeling of being completely unable to perform the task given to him. However, his new found traveling companion did have a point. If they worked together, maybe they could take the rest down. They did have their respective shields after all. Without hesitation, he responded.

"Works for me. A four person team has a much better chance than a two person team, in theory at least. Haha."

Nervous laughter reared its ugly head once more. Not like he wasn't already on edge. Then to add injury to insult, Theta Two had her own choice words for him. She was sorry? Oh how lovely. Pity. Eight didn't care whether she lived or died before he swung, but now, he certainly was swayed towards the latter. Regaining his composure, he tried once more and would continue to do so until she was laying on the ground. Balling his hand into a fist once more, he readied another punch. Taking a step back, he then threw himself at her once more. However this time, he aimed for her back.

This time he didn't foolishly fall back. The punch made contact, though the real impact was yet to be seen. However, the important part to Alpha Eight was that he actually hit something. Him, the cowardly medic. He hit her. Finally he did something on his own.

Zeta Seven is attacking Theta Two
If felt wrong to get attacked and not feel its consequences. The void of a counterattack on his body made Zeta Seven feel hollow. No flesh and bones striking against his own. It wasn't right, and it made him angry. Gamma Eight didn't lead the attack, but she had to pay for it with their body. NO, unacceptable. Is it, is it really? You get out of it scotch free This little voice inside of him whispered to his sense of reason.
No pain, just strike, strike to your hearts desire. it should have been a dream. a blessing.

But it wasn't. Not in the least.
Seven knew it deep down, he wasn't as heartless as he had to be.
"Your right, Neither of us wanted this, but the game is already in play." he told her, the lame excuse only making him feel partly ok about the situation. It was still a horrible thing to do while waving the flag of survival. Murder. "But, you aren't the only one fighting to protect something, and I'll be damned if you take Eight's last breath."

Zeta Seven had moved to put away his gun, he couldn't take the chance of another wide shot. He placed his fist into a close position to his face and his legs bent slightly. He just couldn't take the chance. "Likewise, its not personal" he said behind clenched fists. "Hey, Eight. Please, hang in there." He told her as she gave out a painful whine in protest. "Don't die on me, alright?"

[ Theta Two is attacking Imani / Eta Eleven ]
( sorrysorry for taking so long, was eating dinner ; x ; <3 )

It was nothing personal.

She had to believe if she was going to protect Thyme. She had to stare into everyone else's faces and think that they were nothing more than gas mask clones, void of personality, void of any warmth in the eyes that hid beneath the mask. They were just clones, no personality, no history. No lovers, no friends, no enemies. The people behind the mask couldn't exist now to her, if she was going to protect Thyme. They couldn't exist now, because if they did, then she couldn't do it. She couldn't kill them. She would hesitate in her blows, she would forget the silly game of Swords and Shield's and force Thyme away. She wanted thrill, she wanted exhilaration, but she didn't want it from the people that surrounded her, even as it cut into her like wildfire, making her heart jump erratically and her brain go numb. The beasties in the darkness, the twenty-foot horses that breathed flames - they weren't gas mask people with faces and names and people to protect. She could attack them, she could feel the exhilaration and not pause to feel the seeds of guilt and shame. But these people in this game that she played were alive. And if she couldn't ignore that to bring up a finishing blow if it ever came time, then the island would take her life, if only by the hands of those who were in the same position as her.

Rearing her head as someone came from behind, the girls eyes widened at the blow that should have been taken by her. Her heart raced for a moment for Thyme's sake, and she growled softly under her breath, hands tightening around her weapon. How could she let Thyme take the blows? How could she let him take the blows for her decisions? It was unfair. It was so unfair. But still, even though she willed herself to detach the masks from the people underneath, she struggled, looking at the Alpha who'd dared to attack them both. "Coward," She snapped, but then they were being attacked again, this time from both sides. "Thyme!" Her voice was shrill, nearing worried when the Zeta attacked again. He was speaking too, words that felt like poison in the air.

"... I know."
She said, her voice sober and clear. She stood straighter, stared directly at one of her many opponents. Here, no matter how much she wanted to protect them from becoming what she feared the most, they were just savages. How long would it be before they began to go crazy, cut off beastie heads and set them on sticks, proclaiming them to be the Lord of the Flies? She twisted her stake in her hands, and looked from the Zeta to his shield. "I know." She reiterated again, regret in her tone. But if I'm the sword, she thought darkly, rallying her thoughts into nothing more than what they needed to be. Then I can keep him from becoming a savage like us. So she tried, and tried her best to keep it out away from being personal. They were all just chess pieces on a board. Blacks and whites with no minds of their own. No memories, no thoughts. They lived to move under the hands that guided them, and kick down anything in their way. "You're right, the game is already in play." She smiled ruefully under the mask. "Maybe if we'd met somewhere else, some other time, things would have been different, huh?" She paused, Excalibur in her grip. "But here's a promise, if I take her last breath, than you can take mine."

... I'm sorry. She thought to herself, and turned instead to lunge not for the coward himself, but his shield instead. She didn't want to deal with Gamma Eight and Zeta Seven yet. But the coward... he was the first one that had rubbed her so very wrong.

"Of course," Theta Nine told his partner, all casualness. "Told you before, I'm hard to lose." Indeed, he kept to her side as she moved, rather than waiting for her to return after an attack.

Freed of the burden of deciding who to attack, Thyme proved vigilant in watching the two swords who seemed intent on attacking Tattoo. Spotting Alpha Eight moving toward his sword, he quickly stepped across to intercept that punch. He vaguely hoped it would miss again, but no such luck this time.

Even if he had expected to get--had, in fact, actively put himself in danger's path--he found that he had to work to stifle the gasp that rose to his lips. He succeeded, though. "You missed your mark, sorry," he chirped over at Alpha Eight when he trusted his voice again, sounding much more cheerful than he actually felt. "Hope hitting me's a decent consolation prize." Even as he spoke, he threw out a warding arm to block Zeta Seven's fist.

"It seems like sorry's the fashionable thing to say, I don't know why." Blah blah blah -- what is it about fights? They seemed to loosen Thyme's tongue when he was actually supposed to save his breath. As an afterthought, he added, his chipperness wearing just a little brittle, "And it really doesn't matter that it's not personal if you keep throwing punches, y'know." While he spoke, he shifted to put himself out of punching range as best he can. At this point, given the close quarters, the best he could do really wasn't that good at all, especially since he was still careful to stay within attack-interception range of Theta Two. He cast a quick glance at poor Gamma Eight, noting the extent of her injuries as well as feeling a pang of sympathy for his fellow shield, even if she was on the other side.

Still, he was going to protect Theta Two. His eyes scanned her opponents -- their opponents -- warily, watching for their next move. "Don't mind me. I'm fine," he told his sword, cheerful again. He had to convince her, and he had to avoid worrying or distracting her. Was it a good thing or a bad thing to team up with someone you knew? He didn't know. "We'll be fine. Just focus."

Argh! This was frustrating. He paused and tried to think. Strategy wasn’t his thing- he usually liked to try intimidation, and if that didn’t work he’d switch to blind offense, but the rules said he couldn’t. What would happen if he broke them…? Oh well, best not to try. Snuggieman would have something to say. “Dammit, Eighty, don’t aim for the sword! You only do half the damage! The shield! The shield! I-“

Just then, he got a shoulder full of stake from Theta 2. Imani winced, but he shoved his opponent away before the hit could become any more serious. “Back off!” he roared. “See, Eighty? Like that. The other team’s got the idea!”

"Right, right, sorry η XI! But that was good right? Don't worry, I'm going to make up for it!"

Damn nerves. Stupid things kept him on edge, his mind still scattered from this crazy game of cat and mouse. How was he supposed to gather his thoughts in such a short time? Especially when he was forced to fight for the first time. At least the others had some practice with the boss battle, even if that was beating up their own team member. Whatever, they had an advantage as far as Alpha Eight was concerned. Inexperience he would have to make up for now, when they were thrown into the fray. Though he did feel relieved to have η XI around. The shield acted as a much needed crutch. That was something he could support, deep down. Now that he had taken Eight's damage, Eight felt a little remorse for being able to run around freely with the support of another, forced support at that. He would have to repay him in full somehow. Maybe share pendant? Maybe. Eight still needed to get off the island first and foremost. That was the priority, but it didn't hurt to have a friend or two along the way. Maybe. For now the only way he could repay the Eleven's kindness was to follow his advice.

"You got it Eleven!"

With those words, he charged ahead once more. This time his fist's aim was any part of the other team's shield. Alpha Eight hoped for a repeat of his last success now that his target was Theta Nine. Beginner's luck was all he was riding on now.
