Zeren smiled at the Wher "i guess..i guess he likes me" he said nervously to Kazvar, not sure of the older mans reaction, but for some reason desperately wanting his approval. Sure Kazvar was gruff, and seemed hard to get on with, but the bond between him and his wher seemed almsot as storng as any dragon/rider bonding, even if the blue Wher couldn't communicate the same way. He sighed and absently caressed the wher's knobbly head enjoying the warm skin under his hand.

"Seems to..." Kazvar huffed slightly, folding his arms and looking awkward as the Wher shamelessly enjoyed the attention, tilting his head for a better angle at head scratching.
"...I think you've a better chance at impressing than you give yourself credit for." He noted, which was, he figured, a better alternative to discussing his own opinions. Zeren was a gentler minded soul than he was, tending injured flits and petting watchwhers.

Zeren shurgged the compliment off "Hatchlings pretty much ignored me at the last hatching" he said, swallowing hard. He smiled as Kazvask tilted his head so that Zeren could get to particular places, his eyes lit up as he petted the Wher "i dont know why most of the weyrborn dont like Whers, they're useful and kinda cute, i dont think you're ugly creatures" he murmured to the blue wher.

Grym uncurled himself from around Zerens neck and chirped to the wher, climbing down he sat at Kazvasks feet and craned his head up to look at the bigger blue, his eyes whirling pleasantly.

Zeren patted the flit "that's a Wher, haven't you seen one before? this one saved you from the creature" he said to the flit, before looking back up at Kazvar "i guess we'd better get on with chores?" he offered, getting up from the floor, reluctant to stop petting Kazvask but he couldn't very well do his tasks if he didnt "Grym, go find Viska...Viska!" he said, before the little blue did a sort of little hop/skip jump up and winked Between most likely to Zeren's comfy bed, rather than finding the irate green.

"Part of that Bias could well be that Wher's can, and will, kill a man." Kazvar offered up, an crisp little matter of fact. "Dragons can't. Wher's can."

Wher's in fact did. You had to respect a Wher, you couldn't sit back and comfortably note that it was not only unwilling but unable to purposefully harm you. Combine that with something that could go between, and was at the shoulder around the size of an runner... well. He could understand their reluctance.

"You've eaten?" He asked, "had enough Klah?"

"that's just ignorance though, if you respect a creature and know it's capabilities then they're really no threat at all, IF you behave in the correct way around said creature" he said matter of factly. He nodded vigorously "yessir i have, they made sure at the weyr kitchens before i headed down here"

"It doesn't make it no threat at all, it makes it a threat you're better prepared to deal with." Kazvar corrected, which earned a satisfied, even pleased rumble from Kazvask, who stood and stretched, pleased to emphasize this idea by flexing the powerful muscles under his dark blue hide. "If you're ready then, we'll patrol."

Zeren nodded "right, yes sir" he said in agreement to the correction, His eyes widened as Kazvask rumbled pleasantly and flexed his muscles "yessir, Patrol, okay" he said enthusiastically "lets hope that there are no more injured flits, i think two is enough" he smiled, waiting for the older man to lead the way, since Zeren didn't know the patrol routes for the Wher and his Bonded

"At the least, someone -else- can bond with it." Kazvar noted, though there was a faint hint of amusement in his voice, imagining the boy hopelessly orbited by flits.

Having one seemed like a handful enough, he couldn't imagine having more than two, though there were rumors of some people who were, frankly, insane enough to load themselves down with the creatures. That, in his mind, was just a desperate plea for attention, though it would probably be all the wrong kind as the nightmare little creatures got into anything and everything.

Zeren smiled "yes" he said quietly, following behind the older man. "I'm glad this one seems to be a lot calmer than Viska, i dont think i could deal with two like her" he said, voice tinged with amusement and fear of another like the green.

Silently he paced behind Kazvar a little, relying on the Wher to know where they were going. "Kazvar sir, do you think...well the next hatching, could you be there? i'd like to see you there if you could make it Sir" he said, barely raising his voice above a loud whisper, wondering what the man would say to that.

Kazvar's step faltered slightly, which had nothing to do with the darkness, and he felt an itch of familiar discomfort trickle down his spine at the thought of the hot sands, the towering dragons.

Kazvask meant he was safe from Stand impression... or that was the situation as he understood it, but he was still faintly uncomfortable at the idea. Some dragons, were, albeit extremely extremely rarely, were just... 'chatty'. And he could sort of picture an ugly event of the queen becoming upset at the smell of Kazvask on his skin.

It would really be damned inconvenient all around.

"...I could...manage that." He answered, though he hadn't the slightest idea why on Pern he was agreeing to the whole thing, as Kazvask made a sound of hunger and amusement and loped off ahead after something in the dark. "I'll try anyway. I'll still need to make sure Kasvask gets out for night watch."

Zeren bit his lip, *this is going to go badly, i should have kept my mouth shut, oh shards he's going to send me away* he thought, his fists clenched with nerves as he saw the slight change in Kazvar's step, having been keeping close in the dark. He sweated a little as an uncomfortable silence occured.

his breath wooshed out all in one go, leaving him bent slightly in surprise, this had not been the respose he'd expected, though it was the one he'd wanted, he admired Kazvar, a whole sharding lot if he was honest, "o...of course Kazvar Sir, Kazvask comes first always" he stammered, his heart pounding in his chest, he tried hard to resist the strong urge to hug them man, though his arms moved upwards just a little as if to do so, *oh no, i hope he didn't see that, he's not a hugging sort of guy* he thought, a smile on his face as he thought about the next hatching, he would feel a lot better with Kazvar in the stands watching him.

"It's the safety of the Weyr, the watchwher's need to be let out." Kazvar shrugged, slowing down slowly to a stop to wait for the Weyr to return. No sense plowing forward in the dark until Kazvask was done with what he'd loped off after. Given the watch-wher's reaction, he assumed it was something more to the line of tunnel snakes or something similar, not a full grown Feline. Otherwise the wher would have been unlikely to leave the two of them exposed. "Hold up until he returns." He pointed out, straining his own ears for any sounds in the dark. Somewhere he could hear the dark blue wher snarling, and something else, but Kazvask wasn't making it easy to identify what he was fighting, which suggested that it didn't have much fight left.

"I'm no good luck charm..." He warned, unsure exactly of the boys motivation of wanting him there. It was even less likely he'd be able to protect him from a rogue hatchling, which would probably do most of it's damage before anyone could clear the stands, which was really a healer's job anyway.

Zeren nodded, his mouth dry as they waited for the Wher to return, "i.....i understand Sir i'm glad you are teaching me all this" he said, desperately thinking of something to say next "i know sir, i just....my parents refuse to to attend they think there's no point as i wont Impress anyway" he mumbled.

"Kazvar Sir? how old were you when you Bonded with Kazvask? is there an age where you cant bond with Whers anymore?" he asked, trying to divert attention away in case Kazvar had heard his sad mumbling. "I mean, when i age out i don't want to go back home, i want to stay here and i was wondering if i could possibly train to be a Wherhandler?" he blurted out.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:05 am

Kazvar frowned again slightly at this information. It seemed... cold... if not entirely inaccurate, to suggest that the boy might not impress. Even with the almost overflowing clutches that Trine and Malvren had been gifted with, there were almost inevitably far more candidates than there were eggs.

"...I chose to look into Wherhandling instead of trying to impress." He admitted. "Even those born at the Weyr's aren't always a good choice for candidacy."

And he suspected the dragons themselves had, at least on some level, known of his recalcitrance, even if no riders had yet seemed to pick up on it.

"Yes. You could train to be a Wherhandler." He offered. "Bonding Wher's is not like bonding dragons, you don't age out."

You could, however -die-, but if Zeren hadn't figured that out, he'd learn it in the lessons. "Chances are slim, true, but there's still a chance. You were searched, that means you have the potential, and you have a few years before you age out." he pointed out. "It'll give you more time to study the Wher's themselves as well."

He didn't know what solace to give over parents too pessimistic to watch their boys chance at impression, he'd grown up large in part in the creche, the relationships there were different.

Zeren nodded and gave a small smile as he listened carefully. "Thank you Kazvar" he said looking towards the Wher, "They're not ugly, most people don't like whers and say they're ugly but i dont think they are" he said simply.

Somewhere deep down he hoped that he would Impress, but as someone born outside the Weyr he knew his chances were slim and he didn't want to go home, trading might have been in his blood but he just hadn't got the heart for it like his parents did. In fact he'd not even gotten a letter from them since before he'd stood on the sands, not that he'd expected much from them but he'd hoped for some sort of response.

"Kazvar? who do you think would train me when i do train to become a handler?" he asked hoping the older man would give him the answer he sought, he even blushed a tiny bit thankfully hidden in the dark.
