Its where about half the myths about Vampires were born. Transelvanians believed that the dead were rising, biting and making the living sick. As a resolution they dug up the dead and drove steaks through the hearts of the corpses to keep them from getting out of their graves.

Which most likely made the diggers awfully sick and disgusting, which in turn made their families the same, and spread it out through the community.
Lovely. xp

Also a number of places thought it was cats, so they killed all the cats making the rat population go up and spread it more

the only thing worse than what people thought things were was the way they treated things. Imagine being given enough rum to make you drunk and a rag put in your mouth as your limb is sawed off and a hot sword is pressed to the wound to cauterize it. The pain is so intense that you pass out.

I hope they used the Rum on the sword and then on the wound before they cauterized it.

to my knowledge no the whole point of the cauterizing was to close the wound and burn of any infection when i say a hot sword i mean it had been sitting in fire and was likely glowing like a branding iron. The rum or other form of alcohol was just used to numb the pain.

what made it even worse was it may not have been a doctor who would remove the limb but possibly a carpenter. That or the doctor may have been incompetent or even drunk.

The fact that it was a doctor probably didn't mean as much back then as it does now either.
It was probably that he just chopped off more people's limbs, on more a of a regular basis.
I seriously doubt they were worried about infection. They most likely didn't realise surfaces transferred illnesses that early....
The fact people would llive through the blood loss, burn damage, rum assault and shock testifies to their ability to survive infections as well. You'd have to be a STRONG person to live through that.
