Hilarious Receiver

PostPosted: Mon Aug 03, 2009 8:46 pm

It had been what, two or three days since Rivener had left the flower. After the first night, Riv had been waiting anxiously for some kind of message from Zul, some kind of sign that he'd gotten the flower. When no such message came, Rivener wondered if he should call himself. ...He didn't want to seem desperate or clingy or anything, and so he'd forced himself to wait a whole other day, his insides twisting into nervous knots the entire time. Finally he'd picked up the phone and dialed the dreaded number, wondering if he hoped someone would answer or not.

After a few rings, the tell-tale click of the machine sent a soft disappointment through the Scorpion, and he frowned in concern.

ALEX'S ANSWERING MACHINE

Uhm, hello! Zul, it's me, Riv. Aphi and I dropped by a few days ago, and I left you a, uh... present on the doorstep. I'm just wondering, did you find it? Maybe the wind blew it all away, but I tried to make it stick, really. ...If you're not home yet, where are you? It's been days now, are you okay? Did something happen? Maybe you're on vacation, and if so, then I'm glad for you. ...Anyway, I should go. Call me back if you want, to you know, tell me if you found the gift or not. Bye Zul. I miss you.

Feeling a little bit lighter, glad he hadn't made too much a fool of himself, Rivener hung up and stared at the receiver, almost wanting it to ring. Ten minutes later, deciding that wasn't going to happen right away, Riv sighed and moved over to the couch, intent on distracting himself with television.

      █║ SOLO: Bloom
      █║ INVOLVED: Alex, Zul
█║ SYNOPS: Zul reacts to Rivener's gift.

They'd gotten home early Monday morning, both too exhausted to drive into Gambino to return the jeep; thus, they parked in the backyard and entered through the back patio. Zul could tell by the look on his woman's face that she was relieved to be home (and have a bed that wasn't 'a bird's nest'), and inwardly, he was as well. She had been right - he never wanted to experience a place like that again! It had astounded him to have met so many unpleasant people, especially when humans had always been very fascinating and almost reverant of his very presence. To be hated for a symbol, and feared for what he was...

"I guess this is being homesick," he said out loud. He felt drained. A night in front of a television with a video game would do wonders for the entertainment-deprived Frei.

Alex looked to her charge and smiled, a small, tired smile that reminded him of the night she'd taken Lorenzo to sleep for one last time. "Enjoy it while you can, Zul," she chuckled as she dropped her bag by the couch, picking her way through the rubble towards her room, "we have a lot to do tomorrow."

-----

She failed to mention that 'tomorrow' meant 'today and two days afterwards.' The mess that had been caused in thirty minutes took much longer to clean; scraps of furniture were thrown away, and what could be salvaged was moved onto the back patio to be tampered with once the house was clean. The living room took the worst of it, which meant the kitchen was somewhat spared, save for a few light fixtures and some charred scars on the tiled island. When furniture arrived the next day to replace what was broken, they piled it into the kitchen and hallway, finishing the scrubbing, caulking and paint-touching of the living room before they put the new tables, chairs and entertainment system where they belonged.

It unnerved Zul that the furniture looked exactly like the old stuff. Like it had just been picked out of a catalogue and was on infinite backorder as long as it was needed; from what his woman had told him about her firm, that seemed entirely logical. With the last piece in place - for the living room, anyway - it looked as though nothing had changed. But everything has, the Raevan thought to himself, nothing can just go back to the perfect model it was. The realization made him feel like he might have aged over the past week.

The day after found them salvaging what they could - mostly the personal knicknacks Alex kept and decorations. She had chosen to keep one of the end tables that suffered a few lashes of burns over the surface - she said it looked neat and wasn't damaged otherwise. Alex showed him how to mend some of the wicker chairs from the patio, how to sew pillows and use a marker to touch up a statue. What might have been work for anyone else turned into a learning experience, a bonding between the human and the Raevan as they rebuilt their home as one. She had hoped the effort of rebuilding the home would make Zul more attached and aware of his surroundings - with his tongue out over his top lip and his eyes precariously close to the stomach of a dragon statue, he thought he might understand her intent.

The sun was setting before they were done, and Alex set about cleaning the remains of the shavings and threads left about the patio while Zul brushed off the items they had fixed. He felt accomplished, like he'd really done something that would have some sort of lasting impact; it was extremely satisfying, and he could almost say he was proud. The Frei took a moment to watch the sun lowering over the ocean from the patio as Alex went to take the trash outside, humbled. He had experienced so much in a short span of days...there was still much to think on, with all he had learned--

"Zul!" Alex's voice came from the foyer. "C'mere!"

With a lifted brow, the demon floated back inside the immaculate house and through the foyer to the front door, where he found Alex kneeling in front of a lumpy blanket. She looked over her shoulder to him, a lop-sided grin on her face, lifting up a note for him to inspect. Zul gave her a mildly confused look before accepting the paper, eyes skimming over the contents.

A & Z,

I had to move the red so it'd survive your absence.
The blanket was to keep it from being disturbed.
My apologies. Enjoy.

xxxxxxxxxxx - B

"What is a red?" he inquired, not understanding that it was standing for something. He floated around the blanket, down the steps and at the base of the display. Zul remained impassive as his woman laughed, watching her peek beneath the blanket before tugging it to the side with a great florish.

Zul could only stare, his lips slowly parting as his jaw slackened, blue eyes wide. Rivener...

He didn't know how long. He knew that when the shock wore off, he was practically laying over the steps, holding the 'red' - a most wonderous flower that was the most vibrant shade of red he'd ever seen - which rested comfortably against a vase. Zul assumed that's what the man had meant, that he had to 'move the red.' When was this put here? His fingers extended to touch the stones, namely the ones that made the capital 'R'. The smile he wore was warm and grateful, his chest swollen with a great affection. He wanted to find Rivener and just...be.

"Alix," he finally found his voice, lifting his head to look into the open door. She was standing by the bar, glancing over to him. "Can we go see them, soon...?"

Alex smiled a bit, nodding. "I'd like to see Aphi too," she remarked whimsically, flipping her cell phone open and turning it on. She gave it a strange look before pressing a few buttons and putting it to her ear. "Looks like we have a few messages."

Clutching the flower to his half-formed chest, he righted himself and floated into the house, wings tucked tight against his back. "We didn't check the machine."

"It was fried, Zul, there wasn't much to check," she laughed at his abashed look before silencing, listening. He watched her face to determine what was left: a pensive sadness, it must have been Brad talking about their arrangements for Lorenzo; a quirk of her lips and unamused lowering of her eyebrows, definitely work; the expression remained the same for several minutes, which meant the message was either very long or they'd left multiples. Finally, her brows slowly lifted in surprise, green eyes turning to him. For some reason, it made him feel tingly with anticipation as she pressed a few buttons and handed the phone to him.

The demon listened curiously, and with those first words, his expression brightened into open fondness. "Rivener," he purred at the phone, even though he knew the Sigel could not hear him. The Frei floated around the foyer and into the living room, clutching the flower to his chest and the phone to his ear; he knew he must have looked silly, because he could hear Alex making subtle noises to mask her giggling. He didn't mind just then, because his Rivener...his Rivener missed him.

"How?" he asked as soon as the automated voice came over the speaker, holding it up. "I want to call him."

Alex didn't dim her grin as she approached him, pressing a few more buttons; the screen lit up with "Calling...APHISMET" and she nodded, motioning for him to put the phone back to his ear, which he did with eagerness. Zul waited for the call to go through, not really expecting anyone to pick up - there was still a little daylight left, the time where people were getting ready to go home or preparing for dinner. He was sure his Rivener had better things to do than sit around at home, and for a moment, he imagined the Sigel out and about, doing daily things...wondering if he'd ever able to do them with him--

Aphismet's voice on the machine faded into the patronizing beep, and with a full smile, he left his message. "Hello Rivener." His eyes closed, trying to imagine that he was talking to the Sigel face to face, rather than this little box. He could almost see that smile, the shine of crimson eyes. "I'm sorry for not calling you sooner. A lot happened...a lot." The last two words were said with a soft melancholy, but he wasn't ready to elaborate just yet. "We are home now and I received your gift, I...have it here." One of his wings curled over his shoulder, the bone tip clinking against the glass vase. "I love it. It's beautiful and reminds me of your eyes. I wish I could keep it forever..."

Tan fingers brushed over the yellow faded tips before he remembered to continue with his message. "Thank you, for thinking of me." A pause. "This is perfect. To end a hard time and start with your flower." Blue eyes flicked momentarily to the side to observe Alex before adding cryptically, "And what it means, to us." Yes, that would do. He smiled wide and warm, making a pleased sound as he exhaled. "I want to see you. Can we meet up soon? Alix said it was okay. You say when and where and...I'll be there. I miss you." Satisfied that he'd said enough, he flipped the phone closed and handed it back to his woman, who was giving him the most peculiar look. "What?"

"You've really grown," she said in awe, fingers extending to take the phone from his hand. "Do you remember your last message? I thought you were going to throw the phone in fear. Now look at you." He could see the burning question in her green eyes, but she never voiced it. And he would not answer.

"I'm not a child," he countered in a fairly child-like fashion, smiling a bit. "I will learn. I want to be able to grow, like Rivener. Do we have a jar?" He abruptly changed the subject. "I want to keep the stones."

She didn't have to know his selfish reason for truly wanting to grow, to mature, to understand. Zul very much wanted that clarity, but there was something more he desired, a single wish that made him forget his previous woes and upsets.

I want to feel the butterflies.

(This solo would have contained parts of Alex's report that would have shed more light on her side of the gunshots solo, including disturbed wild life and more discussions with Henry.) The firm Alex works for calls her in with a surprise: Henry has sent a gift. There on the table is the last surviving baby from a clutch of slow loris that they had found while on their trip. He included a note that he was not half of what she was, and that if the baby had any chance to survive, it was with Alex.

x x x x x █║ MSN SHORT: Caught
x x x x x █║ INVOLVED: Rivener, Zul
x x x x x █║ SYNOPS: Rivener schedules another date with Zul.

Rivener grinned into the receiver as he waited for the machine to pick up, as it always did. *Ring RingRing*

The demon was floating by the landline when it rang; with Alex working in another room on reports, he took it upon himself to answer, cradling the plastic between his long ear and shoulder. "Hello?"

Rivener blinked in outright shock as the smokey voice answered. Not only had someone picked up, it was ZUL HIMSELF? The Scorpion's heart thought this was a very good time to begin thumping like crazy against his chest, and Riv had to swallow before he spoke. "Zul? ...It's Rivener."

A slight brow lifted at the brief silence on the other end. He then heard his name - in his voice - and Zul was all but trying to plaster the phone to the side of his face. "Rivener!" he purred, clearly delighted. "My Rivener, my dear Rivener...how are you?" It seemed the Frei couldn't get enough of the Scorpion's name.

Rivener grinned like a lovestruck idiot on the other end of the line, shivering at hearing his name so many times from the demon's voice. "I-... I'm fine, I, uh. I just got your message. Are you alright? It sounded like you were going through tough times." Riv leaned forward until he was draped over the back of the couch, looking like a content cat.

"Ah." The single word held some hesitation, a bit of reflection. Zul floated in a lazy circle before resting his free hand against his brow. "I'll be fine, if I can see you. Been...it's been a very long week." He sounded like Alex, and that made him smirk a little. "Mmn, the flower. Thank you, my Rivener...it helped, so much."

Rivener frowned at the first words, then smiled at the last. He chuckled breathily into the receiver, twirling his fingers in the cord like a teenage girl. "I am so glad you liked it. And I'm even more glad it made things a little better for you. I asked Aphi, and he said we could go see you. We'll go anytime you want, Aphi only works at four every day so anytime before that is good."

The Frei's face lit. He floated into the room Alex was working in; Rivener would hear a few muffled words between them, the receiver pressed against his half-formed chest, before his excited voice came back over the line. "'Lix said you can come over or we can go out, without her, she has work, but will call Aph-ez-met, but you and I! Us!" His glee was tangible, almost audible in the way he bounced on his ribbon.

Rivener quirked an eyebrow as silence greeted his announcement. Well, not silence really, but muffled chaos he assumed came from Zul muffling the phone to talk to Alex. An instant later his theory was proved correct. "Just us? You and me? ...That would be WONDERFUL. Now? Do you want- Oh, no, wait, tonight would be better. In the starlight. You and me, together. Yeah?" Riv was nearly bouncing as well.

The suggestion was perfect, and Zul eagerly nodded - realizing after a few seconds of silence that Rivener couldn't /see/ the nod. "Yes, perfect!" he vocalized, the smoke in his voice curling into a pleased, almost purring sound. "Where?" Oh, but he was so very impatient for the night to fall!

Rivener grinned, feeling a strange urge to kiss the phone. He resisted, although the urge manifested itself instead in a low, pleased sound. "Mmmh. I don't know, Zul, anywhere... Somewhere romantic. With lots of flowers. And a good view of the sky. Oh, how about we sneak into the botanical garden in Gambino after it closes? We can easily fly over the fences... We'll have the place all to ourselves..."

Zul had no idea if consequence could be involved in what Rivener was suggestion, and quite frankly, the demon didn't care. It was their time. "Yes," he responded immediately, his eyes vibrantly staring at the sky, willing it to darken. NOW. "Yes, when night falls, meet there, yes?" His vocabulary had diminished, but he didn't mind just then; they were going to have a real date!

Rivener did the same Zul had done a little earlier: he simply nodded at the phone before realizing the demon couldn't SEE the nod. "Yes, I'll meet you there. See you in a little bit, my Zul. ...I love you." He added the last with a blush, knowing that the other couldn't say anything back just yet. "Bye!" He waited for a similar goodbye from the other before hanging up.

"Soon," came the pleased reply. "Never soon enough." Zul smiled at those words, a soft, almost gentle expression on his face, replying with the only words he could use until he could return them in full: "I know." With a sigh that could be described as love-struck, he bid the Sigel farewell in turn, "Good day, Rivener. Good night to follow."

Rivener twirled around the living room after he'd put the phone down, zipping to the kitchen to inform Aphismet of what had happened. "I'm gonna go see Zul tonight, but Alex is busy so she has no time. She said she'd call you, though." Ignoring his guardian's crestfallen expression, Riv hurried upstairs to get ready. He had to look PERFECT.

x x x x x █║ INVOLVED:
x x x x x █║ SYNOPS: It's a pool party - lots of chaos ensues!

Summary
A last minute visit turns into much needed canoodling between Alex and Aphismet! While the two flirted in the pool, Rivener and Zul tried their best not to look like an item and retrieve Sevilin from his home - which ends in disaster as LuLu and Sevvie get into a physical fight! The party ends with Alex taking Sevilin to the hospital, and a promise to call her white-haired date.

Follow up to Slanndalous' journal entry.

Alex was livid, and it was quite the understatement. It wasn't bad enough that she'd had to take the delicate Frei to the hospital for treatment, but she'd gotten a rather unhappy call from Kyou - Sevilin was to be removed from We`rika's care for an uncertain amount of days while an 'investigation' was performed. She had to quickly explain what happened and that it wasn't necessarily We`rika's fault - it was the work of 'children at play' - before she hung up and tried to contain the sudden outrage she felt.

It was, thus, no surprise, that the Italian became a bull in a china store when the shaman came into sight. She had only seen red through those toxic green eyes as she swung at him, dotting him smartly in the eye.

And she would have kept swinging if the alarmed staff hadn't yanked her off of the surprised We`rika. She didn't actually think he cared, or even felt it, since she was still in her bathing suit get-up, but it had done wonders to soothe her own anger. Alex had to be escorted out of the hospital (after she gripped a wall and growled that they still better let her pay) to meet up with a very bemused looking Zul, who had been in the waiting room all the while. "Party?" he inquired in a faux-innocent manner, blue eyes flicking behind her towards the group of stunned personnel and security.

"Sure," she replied tartly, still shaking with rage. Her knuckles were a little red; she hadn't hit him hard enough to hurt herself, much to her dismay. The Frei followed after her, picking up the inflamed hand and lifting a brow in silent question. Alex glanced sidelong at the Frei, her eyes the infamous radioactive green of her rage. "I gave Sevilin's owner my opinion of his care-taking abilities." Her fingers balled into a fist before she withdrew from Zul's grasp.

The demon merely blinked at her before looking forward, following Alex in silence towards the truck. When they reached the vehicle, he gave an odd smile and commented, "That's why I like you so much, Alix. I'm sorry I missed it."

Alex made a scoffing sound, but Zul's praise had rather surprised her, preening a little. "I'm glad you missed it, or you might have followed my lead."

"Yes."

The two looked over the truck at each other, each giving an understanding smile before climbing in and heading home.

Hazeline: *listens to the beeping of the phone*

Alex: *picks up her phone and flips it open, eyeing the unfamiliar number* This is Alex.

Hazeline: Umm, hi. Hazeline here. Hey Alex...I am worried about Xiu. He's not been his usual self lately...

Alex: Hey. *she greeted calmly, not recognizing the woman until she mentioned her Raevan - and that one, she did know* Xiu? *she frowned, thinking of Vyn's problem as well* What's he doing...or not doing?

Hazeline: He's been rather listless lately and...I don't know...he's been keeping to his room more often than not. Says he's reading but I'm not sure...

Alex: *rubs the bridge of her nose, frowning more deeply, wondering just /what/ the heck is going on with the Raevans lately* Have you confronted him? Or tried taking him out somewhere? I'm not sure what... *there's some tapping as she pulls up the information she has about him on her laptop* ...what the heck /does/ he eat?

Hazeline: I have but he just laughs in his usual manner but I am worried. He tells me that he's just trying out a diet plan of sorts...and he eats...innocence, at least that it what I assume from his explanation.

Alex: A /diet/? *she repeats in surprise, biting her lip* He's too young to diet. Okay, well...huh. He looked so good last I saw him. Does he feed automatically? For example, if he's surrounded by...innocence, does he naturally absorb it or is it a conscious effort?

Hazeline: Conscious. He tells me that he only takes a bit out of each human he feeds off. I tried telling him that he's fine as he is but...he well...ignores me politely? If that made sense...*laughs worriedly*

Alex: It makes sense. *she thought of Zul, who was quite adamant when insisting that Raevans did things differently than humans* Alright. What we can do is meet up at the Lab, and I can try to talk to him, or you can try to get out of him exactly what his 'diet' is. Frei's have such a strong development cycle during this part of their growth, it's important he doesn't short himself.

Hazline: I understand. When can I see you?

Alex: *there's fluttering as her calender is checked* I have a conference, but I can see you about this time next week, if that's not too long? Maybe give you some time to talk to him.

Hazeline: Sounds good. Thank you Alex.

Alex: My pleasure, Hazeline. Take care and call me if anything changes, okay?

Hazeline: Alright. Thank you and goodbye *hangs up the phone*

x x x x x █║ MSN SHORT: Dating, Part Deux
x x x x x █║ INVOLVED: Alex, Aphismet
x x x x x █║ SYNOPS: Alex asks Aphi for another date!

Not long after the incident at the pool party, Alex found herself thinking of Aphismet again. She didn't really...need an excuse to call, persay, but it didn't hurt to have a backup in case she couldn't manage to say, 'I missed you.' It was around lunch time when she finally punched in his number, biting her bottom lip as the phone rang.

Aphismet was, for once, NOT in the kitchen when the phone rang. He was slacking off on the sofa, flicking channels, procrastinating making food for his mid-day meal. There was no one else home to feed today, after all. Everyone was off working but him. The phone was a welcome distraction, and he picked it up with a cheerful: "Yyyy-ello?"

A grin lit her features; how easily he made her smile, even just with a greeting! "Aphi?" she laughed, "It's Alex! How are you?" It seemed that a lot of the stress she'd held just slipped away, wondering what he was doing to sound so at ease.

Aphismet spluttered for a moment on the phone, nearly dropping the remote control in his lap as he scrambled for the mute button. "A-Alex?! Wow! I mean, Hi! I'm-... sorry, I didn't expect... It's like the middle of the day, no one ever... I mean Hi! I'm fine! I'm real good! How are you?" He blushed and grinned like a moron, aware that he was sounding silly.

More laughter sounded, light and happy. If that wasn't the best greeting ever! It made her feel warm and well received. "Hey," she giggled softly, "surprise!" Wrestling her mirth down, Alex leaned against the bar in her house, stuffing her hands in her pockets, phone tucked against her ear. "Great now! You know how to flatter a gal," she teased lightly. "I just, y'know...I uh, wanted to let you know Sev is - will be okay. And um." The woman shuffled a little, her smile small and a touch shy. "Y'know, it was...nice to see you again. And maybe we could do it again? Seeing each other, that is," she quickly corrected herself, not sure she could meet Aphismet in a bathing suit again anytime soon!

Aphi chuckled at her teasing words, glancing down at his remote control bashfully as he was praised for flattering her. Flattering by being reduced to a bumbling fool? Alright, he could do that. Learning that Sev would be okay brought a more comfortable smile to the chef's face, although it turned shy again when Alex continued to ask if they could see each other again. Feeling rather teasing, Aphi grinned at the receiver. "Are you asking me on a date, Miss Alex?" His tone conveyed amusment. "I'd love to, you know that. Just name the time and place!"

Alex's mouth moved to reply, but her voice seemed to have escaped her. She lifted a hand from her jeans to rub her cheek, which felt rather warm, her smile returning in full force, if not slightly goofy. He'd got her, there! "Yes I am, Mister Aphismet," she finally replied with good humor. "Weeeeell," she hummed thoughtfully, considering a good place for a second official meeting (DATE), "you guys could come here, if you want, and I could cook for you. Or if it's not a good time, we can go out to, say...the beach? The pier is really nice during the day and kinda--" Alex choked a moment. She almost said 'romantic.' "--nice at night," she finished lamely, laughing with embarrassment.

Aphismet chuckled at the woman's reaction, calling him Mister just as he'd called her Miss. "I'd love to go to your house, if that's alright. I've been thinking about that apple dessert you promised me. And I'd love to taste your cooking, too!" The chef was blushing. The thought of the two of them cozying up on a couch at her house... "Um, that sounds lovely, your house."

"Right!" she confirmed happily. "Oh and...you should bring that movie we talked about, Snatch or something? Make it dinner and a movie - maybe squeeze the beach in if you're willing, it's really pretty at night, out here..." Alex felt giddy again, like they were going on their first date, but this time it was with less fear and more joy. She really enjoyed the chef's company, excited for a chance to treat him this time.

Aphismet was beginning to feel rather excited too. "Snatch, yes! That sounds like a wonderful plan, dinner, a movie, and a walk on the beach. I'm very much looking forward to it! When do you want to do this? I'm free this weekend! ...Unless that's too sh-short notice?" Aphi couldn't just invite himself over willy-nilly!

She was certain she'd be wearing the grin on her face for the rest of the week - maybe even the month, if the date went as well as she was certain it would! "No no, that's wonderful! I'd like that a lot, Aphi." Alex laughed softly, still feeling shy about the whole...courtship thing. She hadn't had much fortune in dealing with people. "So this weekend. Come over whenever! Zul and I are up early so if you want breakfast, lunch and dinner, head over." A broad invitation, but she meant it whole-heartedly.

Aphismet laughed with relief at her eager reply. He hadn't overstepped his bounds, that's good! "I will be over sometime in the afternoon, since I'm sure Rivener will want to come along and he doesn't get up all that early at all. I'll be counting the days until this weekend, then! See you Saturday afternoon, Alex!" Aphismet smiled with utmost glee.

"Me too," she returned earnestly, excitement beginning to take hold. She had some shopping to do! "See you soon, Aphi!" Delighted, Alex turned the phone off and did a bit of a dance right there in the kitchen. It was time to get to work!
