Never was interested...... Now it's too late. Adrian was too good at reading feelings. This wasn't like Patrick telling him that he was going to die sometime in the future, so he couldn't promise not to leave. This was him saying... I might just leave.
And all those odd, possessive feelings came flooding back. He couldn't allow him to leave. But what could he say? Nothing that came out from his mouth could convince the other. But there was more than one thing his mouth could do. He leaned over and kissed his friend on the lips, trying to do the same as he had with the thousands of girls he had seduced so well. But he struggled. His lips seemed to slip off the other's too fast, he had to try again, make it look intentional, control his face so the other wouldn't see how he was wanting to puke at this betrayal. Why was he doing this? Patrick would be better off on his own, somewhere else, he had always thought that, yet now here he was stopping him. Dragging him back, because he needed him around and he had only realized now.

You did not care for me or what sacrifices I made on your behalf... Patrick froze at the press of Adrian's lips upon his, but they soon slid away. He had been about to open his mouth and ask what Adrian was doing, but his 'friend's' lips were back, and he shivered.
I imagined this so many times... but now I don't want to respond?! The frown came to his lips as he was being kissed, unable to enjoy the sensations past the motion of his mind. His hands instinctively raised to push against Adrian's chest. The tears were flowing freely now, genuine, as Patrick shoved violently to get Adrian off of him.
At the same time he had jerked his head back to ensure the words were released. "Adrian-! How could you do this to me?!" he wailed, putting his head into his hands. "I cannot - must not! - make such a promise! No matter what you say or do, you cannot be so c-cruel as to demand it from me!"
Patrick Raphael Smith's chest heaved, his eyes peeking between his fingers, sparkling. Acting was no longer required, for he still cared for the stupid, slow man in front of him, and though he knew Adrian did not truly want him, would never love him in either way... It was still painful not to be able to make such a promise.
But he would still use his genuine reactions to his advantage: his future and Taraneith must be protected. The thought wrenched the last words from him as he continued to shake violently.
"Surely you know how I feel - have always felt?! I will only survive in your blissfully married presence for a month at the best." The words were whispered, yet still thrown as though they were weighted stones. "No. I will not promise, for I must leave you: either the reaper, or foreign travel will separate us..." He finished, knowing that the first was a definite threat.
Wonder how Master Tar would feel about aiding me in creating the illusion of my death... Patrick wondered idly....so now, you may reap the benefits of what you have sown.

Never was interested...... Now it's too late. Adrian's eyes widened. Little, defenseless Patrick, telling him off? Puppy-dog Patrick, threatening to kill himself? Patrick, who had always been there for him, telling him he would leave? He wanted to force him to stay. But Patrick dead? Or refusing Gabrielle? He couldn't do that. Tears slipped out before he knew it. "Do you think I'm still going to marry Gabrielle with Sarah pregnant? I'm sorry, Patrick. I wish I could return your feelings. I wish I had loved you before. Then neither of us would be in this wretched state. I just want you to know... I may not love you, but... you still mean a lot to me. Will you write? Even if you throw my letters in the fire for fear of my description of my wife, will you tell me, in writing, that you're safe? I'm so sorry." he sobbed. "Will you ever forgive me for being so selfish?"
He hugged him, and this time it wasn't a false seduction. This time, it was just Adrian and Patrick, best friends. "I'll miss you."
And then they heard a knock. Sarah was at the front door.

Patrick blinked, relief flashing through his eyes briefly at the realisation that Sarah had, indeed, not told the whole village that she was 'not pregnant' - she hadn't even told the father! - which meant no-one knew of what he'd pretended with her.
The young man had to pause and think before speaking as he embraced Adrian in return, knowing that this time it was a genuine hug. Despite this, he could not possibly leave an address...
Taking a deep breath, he smiled shakily - Adrian's confession weakened him - and nodded. "I'll write, but I won't have an address for you to respond to."
The woman of the house stomped to the door - her worthless son was still in his room with his 'best friend', and she had plenty of chores lined up for him that he wasn't doing! - and flung it open. The glare became a slight smile as this was Sarah, who had always openly admired Patrick. Unfortunately, the silly girl had also fancied Adrian, and if she had the audacity to call here for the young gent who didn't actually live here -!
"Yes?" she asked, polite but with narrowed eyes.

Never was interested...... Now it's too late. Adrian sighed. "I guessed that you would wander. Tell me if that changes... in your letters. If it never does... know that I will read them with joy... unless they bring bad tidings." he said, resigned. "And when you settle down please send me the address. You're the best friend I ever had, and I hope it gives you comfort."
Meanwhile, Sarah smiled and curtsied at Patrick's mother. "I came to see Patrick, actually." she murmured, instinctively holding her stomach. Patrick had never told her what had come of the doctor. Her eyes were down and her face seemed to glow with happiness. Here she would be, marrying Patrick! She had formulated a plan. She would marry him and then even if the baby was there they would pass it off as their own child- a month and a half is not much, she could claim an early baby if they married soon. Adrian was forgotten- he was a good man, but so very easy to get! Patrick on the other hand was quite the catch. He didn't give himself to just anyone. To think! Of all the girls it was her he had chosen.
It never occurred to her the situation was odd. A doctor in the middle of the night, all the sudden affection, the mysterious new interest- she was much too eager to believe it was her looks that did it all, and her easy, flirtatious temper perhaps.
She had formerly believed that she was in love with Adrian, of course, but when Patrick showed an interest it was clear that he was the closest to her heart. After all, Adrian flirted with everyone! But Patrick had picked her out of all the girls to be the one.
She stared off into space, dreamy.

One believes it is all tied in a rather fetching bow...
Patrick nodded, then swooped down to peck Adrian's cheek lightly. It was the only thing he allowed himself, yet once it was done he felt shaky: should it have been done when the very idea of kissing Adrian in any way made his knees want to buckle?
Deciding that he better not linger, he forced a smile that wavered and stepped back, his hand going to his 'best friend's' shoulder. "I shall tell you if I settle down, and yes, it does comfort me a little..." he murmured, squeezing the shoulder beneath his hand.
With a bow, he released Adrian and winked. "You'd better go: the gossips will have formed quite a tale around us now - again! - and my mother will have bitten her tongue off. She wants me to help with something, and patience isn't her way!" This time the smile was genuine, filled with camaraderie at the facts they both knew. The young man opened the door and bowed again before holding out his hand for Adrian to shake.
Unfortunately, he now heard his mother's voice, followed by one that made him freeze: Sarah. Not that the words of either woman could be understood, but it did not bode well...

A startled gasp left the older woman's lips as she watched Sarah clasp her belly: it was a clear, universal sign she would know anywhere! Her eyes flashed to Sarah's face as she listened to the girl asking to see Patrick, her mouth open in shock, eyes staring almost blindly. She came to see my son - MY SON?! The one who has ne'er looked at a girl all his life? Never come to me in tears because he was rejected by a female he'd fallen for, never started spouting romantic notions of any kind? In fact, the only one he did shed tears for was that best friend of his! 'Mum, he won't play with me!' 'Mummmyyy, tell Adrian not to tease me!
Instinct took over and she grabbed Sarah's hand, pulling her inside. "You must tell me everything!" She demanded, tears welling in her eyes as she tugged. I must know why he picked this one, for surely the gel has come to tell me that she carries the bairn of my son's making! She forced herself to act calm. For ought I know, it could have something to do with that wretched doctor: Sarah is pregnant by another and seeks Patrick's advice... but if not then I may see him wed yet!
... only to learn that 'twill soon crash around one's ears.

Never was interested...... Now it's too late. Adrian laughed. A real smile came onto his face. Then he nodded and swung out the window, climbing out through the tree that grew there.
This may be one of the last jokes we share. Ah, Patrick, I wish I could have been the one for you.
Sarah blinked. She bit her lip. "Madam, I am afraid this is something I can not speak of even to you, for I hardly know what is going on myself! I shall speak to Patrick, and then I promise you either me or him will explain it all." she said, though she was itching to tell more. But what could she say? Patrick had made her no promises, though she was sure she would, and he would never forgive her for dishonoring Adrian. She was smart enough to figure that out. Everyone knew how he was about that man. "I shall talk to him now, that must be him on the stair." she said, running to meet the man.
"Patrick! Come quickly, for I have much to tell you. And you have much to tell me! What did the doctor say? Oh, but first I must tell you my idea." she said quickly, in a shrill, breathy, stupid voice, hardly drawing breath. "Oh, Patrick, I can marry you regardless! If he says I am pregnant marry me and we will pretend it is not Adrian's but yours! It is so simple! So easy! Adrian will not begrudge you it I am sure! He has Gabrielle after all. But what of the doctor?"

One believes it is all tied in a rather fetching bow...
Patrick's mother had instantly let go of Sarah's hand, willing to let it be for now so long as she got an answer sooner or later from one of them: she was content to know that her son could, at last, have shown interest in a woman!
She bustled off, almost whistling in her cheer as she was eager to let the two 'love birds' - as she liked to think of them - have some time to discuss matters. Perhaps Patrick Raphael Smith would even propose! With that heavenly thought, she assembled her daughters and set them about doing the tasks their brother was supposed to be doing.
Patrick blanched, then hid it successfully despite his pale cheeks. He drew her into his room and sat her on the bed, thinking of privacy rather than what the stupid girl might decide it meant: he definitely had no intention of ravishing her!
Taking a deep breath, he placed his hands on her shoulders as he stood in front of her, bending to her eye-level. "Sarah, the doctor said that you were not pregnant, that 'twas a false alarm..."
He took another deep breath, focusing on what he could say to her that would make sure she knew he was leaving without letting her know when or allowing her to think she could go with him.
He shuddered at the thought, his face inches from hers as he attempted to plan his speech, his tongue licking his lips lightly, eyes blank despite the fact that they appeared to be staring at her - Sarah could, perhaps, be forgiven for believing Patrick to be staring at her in awe...
.. only to learn that 'twill soon crash around one's ears.

Never was interested...... Now it's too late. Sarah was overjoyed at the thought. "Oh, thank you, Patrick! My parents would have been so angry if I had told them but now I don't need to worry and I love you and you are so handsome and I'll take you right now if you want and Oh, how I long to marry you!" she cried happily, kissing him on the lips as she thought he liked. "But Patrick, why are you not smiling? I know I am pretty but is this not cause for celebration? Your mother is so glad that you are dating me you would not believe, I think she guessed it out, you must tell her soon... Ooh, how happy I am!"

More intricate lies are being created...
... but will anyone suspect the truth underneath?
Patrick was brought back to the present with a violent roll of his stomach at the scent of Sarah, at the feeling of her lips on his - again!
He didn't need to fake tears: they welled up as he struggled against his gagging reflex, an idea occurring to him with blessed swiftness so that he bit his tongue to prevent his shout of relief from escaping his lips.
But how to phrase it? She mustn't tell anyone, mustn't want to follow me or spread it around the village... Drat, Tar's going to hate me for the all these lies!! I just hope he'll forgive me, because I don't know what else to say to get her away from me! Though if I pick very, very carefully, then perhaps he won't have to help me pretend this time?!
The young man gulped and appeared to force himself to meet her gaze as tears slipped from between his eyelids, trickling down the sides of his face. "S-Sarah... I... I don't know how to t-tell you this...!" he whispered, pulling away and wrapping his arms around himself, starting to rock a little.
Out of the corner of his eye he watched her expression whilst maintaining the act: he had to convince her, stop her from babbling, and if he could just gauge her reaction to this start to his 'terrible news'...

Never was interested...... Now it's too late. Sarah was, for once, silent, though she tried to comfort the other by holding his hands in hers. She bit her lip. What can he mean? After such news what can there be of bad? Is it a death? But how would his mother not know at the same time he did, why should she not tell me? No, it must be another thing. What could he have learned during the night? It has only been a few short hours and most during the night, who could have given him news? But perhaps he knew it from before... but if he loves me why should he lie to me? she wondered.
She looked very nervous indeed and for some reason, even though she now knew there was no child, her arms wrapped around her stomach protectively. "What is happening, Patrick?"

More intricate lies are being created...
Patrick gulped theatrically, inwardly cringing at her hold on him even as he began to speak. "W-when you'd fainted, the doctor told me that-", he gently pulled his hand out of her grasp so that he could hold his head in his hands, "t-that I had symptoms. Symptoms of a w-wasting disease..."
He peeked between his fingers as though terrified she'd pull away from him. "I'm not contagious or anything - it's not that kind of disease, I promise!" The words were blurted, apparently forced from him as he began to rock slowly and covered his eyes again. "I-I have a month - maybe even up to a year - before it starts on my face. B-but once it does start I'll only have days.." he whispered.
Patrick Raphael Smith then raised his head, face tear-streaked as he stared at Sarah before grabbing her hands in a tight grip. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and impassioned. "So, you see, I have to go away. Travel far away so that no-one will know - my mother and s-sisters... my father... Adrian: none of them can know. It'd hurt them and... and I couldn't marry you, let you become pregnant with our child when I know I won't be there to help you raise it."
He bit his lip hard and allowed more tears to fall as he made complete and 'sincere' eye-contact. "Please... please, Sarah. I'm begging you not to tell them. I-I can't let them know..."
If I don't get applause for this performance, I swear I'll scream! He vowed, his thoughts not showing in the slightest as he continued to act.
... but will anyone suspect the truth underneath?

Sarah`s dream, her hopes, everything was gone now. Patrick was not to marry her and she was not even pregnant, she could not even get Adrian! She cried and cried, shoving away from Patrick and running out of the house. "I won`t tell." she said,, before she ran.
She wiped her tears and settled her emotions as she arrived at home, and said happily. "Hello, mother, father." though her voice was not exactly steady.
Her parents assumed it was a foolish thing, and let her alone.
She saw the `doctor` walking over in the other direction, on her way, but thought nothing of it. After all, why should he not talk to his patient?
