Awesome. Obviously, I go by Andy with friends.

When I was, like, 5 I wanted to make "Andy" my real name and "Andrew" my nickname, because I though Andrew sounded too mature for me. xd Makes me wonder how mature a kid it takes to judge the maturity of his own name. eek

Shhh *moves to hangout*

But, yeah, never liked Andrew when I was younger.

Of course, the best part is when they say, "You Pro-Life people just keeping using the dictionary..." XD As though it's a bad thing... As though the dictionary isn't a valid source, and could be lying...

It usually AFTER they tell us that a word doesn't mean something. For example,

She
Since there seems to be all sorts and kinds of debate over whether or not the word 'child' can be used in reference to a fetus, this is what Webster's Dictionary has to say on the matter:

Quote:
Webster's Dictionary of the English Language Wrote:

child pl. children n.

a boy or girl at any age between infancy and adolescence

a newborn infant

a person of any age in relation to his parents

Of those three definitions, a fetus fails to meet any of the requirements. It's not between the ages of infancy or adolescence-it's not even an infant-nor does it qualify as a person, since personhood is not granted until birth.

I

Wow...Websters gives me:

Quote:

Quote:
Main Entry: child
Pronunciation: 'chI(&)ld
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural chil·dren /'chil-dr&n, -d&rn/
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English cild; akin to Gothic kilthei womb, and perhaps to Sanskrit jathara belly
1 a : an unborn or recently born person b dialect : a female infant
2 a : a young person especially between infancy and youth b : a childlike or childish person c : a person not yet of age
3 usually childe /'chI(&)ld/ archaic : a youth of noble birth
4 a : a son or daughter of human parents b : DESCENDANT
5 : one strongly influenced by another or by a place or state of affairs
6 : PRODUCT, RESULT
- child·less /'chI(&)l(d)-l&s/ adjective
- child·less·ness noun
- with child : PREGNANT

http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=child&x=24&y=20

I dunno why you only got three for websters.

She
Looks like someone's found their semantical dead horse, and is going to beat it until it falls to pieces.

Why did I only get three? Because the Webster's I have immediate access to is sitting on my bookshelf and was published in 1989. Back before soft language became commonplace.

You want to know whats really funny about that Lyme? My Science teacher has one of those huge unabridged dictionaries datign back to the 1960s, and the definition for child is actulay more spelled out then what you gave her eek

Alot of them use salective arguing. They can say what they want to use such as "There is a potential for the mother to get hurt or die duing delivery, she's bette roff getting an abortion"

But when we bring up the risk of abortion, they call us lieing and propoganda.

Can anyone help me with the argument that if abortion is made illegal women who have miscarriages will be charged with manslaughter. The pro-choicers keep bringing it up, and I keep telling them its ridiculous, but they keep clinging to it.

Seeing how nobody causes a miscarriage ( most of the time, theres a few careless people) but people cause abortiond, and they tell me I don't make sense?

What I love is when you prove that it's not about potential, they get mad.

Think about it. A fetus is not a potential life. It is an actual life.

It is a potential newborn. A potential toddler, a potential teenager, a potential adult. A potential mother, father, wife, husband, grandparent, aunt, uncle. But an actual child. A fetus is an early stage of human existance.

We aren't arguing potential.

Abortion is actually happening. Lives are actually being lost. It's all an actuality. And it's an actuality I hate.

Or potental of something going wrong but they say " I'm aborting so I don't risk my life" they act like everybody will die giving birth. They can use potenal but we can't? And yes it is life, not potental life.

Just like they can say prochoice applies to one choice but prolife applies to all life. Another double standard. You know, like only one gender having reproductive rights, only one person having bodily integrity, etc.
PostPosted: Sat Dec 10, 2005 8:27 am

interesting. SInce pro-choice means supporting the choice to either abort or give biorth. Not mackign the choice to abort.

Lately it seems like whenever I debate abortion, the pro-choice arguments just keep getting weaker and more stupid. What I mean is for example I've heard them say if abortion were illegal women who had miscarriages would be charged with manslaughter, and that a fetus is like a cabbage. I mean honestly what are these arguments?! So the topic of discussion is stupid arguments the other side makes and the best way to counter or deal with them.

I wish you would involve quotes around these things you're saying people say.
It just seems like propaganda.
I thought that you as a pro-lifer would have enough dignity not to bash another person's opinion by making a huge thread devoted to statements you don't believe in.
You're generalizing a gigantic population of people by saying each and every one of us has a stupid and weak debate argument which though you may feel is true you could just keep it to yourself instead of making fun of the opinions of individual people.
Not just little 3 cm high chibi people with weird green hair, elf ears and that Ice Wand they bought in Gaia land for 10 000 gold but real people who want to defend their opinion because they feel it's something they believe in.

Generally, when we don't use quotes around that sort of statement because it's not just one time, or two times, that we've heard it, we hear it over, and over again. Also, we aren't allowed to use the names of specific Pro-Choicers when we are talking about how stupid arguments are.

And, notice that this is the Pro-Life guild. In our opinion, the arguments of the other side often are weak and stupid. Of course, ya'll think that our arguments are often weak and stupid, and in fact ya'll are much less inhibited when it comes to insulting us. I haven't gone in today, but last time I was in the Pro-Choice guild, just about half the posts on the first page are centered on how stupid the Pro-Lifers are.

This thread is meant to vent some steam about arguments that we see a lot that really make no sense, like the example he used. We have a perfectly good right to vent about things like that.
