to get back on subject:
the death penalty has a lot of pros and cons.
CONS: it's actually more expensive to sentence someone to death than it is to give a life sentence (because of all the lengthy appeals). psychological studies have shown that it doesnt actully deter anyone from committing a heinous crime - if they're gonna do it, they're gonna do it. what if you sentence/kill the wrong person(s) (and yes, the WM3 are ******** innocent. the culprit? one of the dead boys' fathers. all the strongest evidence points to him but was ignored because they wanted to punish the "satan worshipping" metalheads). bringing back chain gangs would be more productive (and, as mentioned, cheaper). oftentimes prisoners commit suicide or are shanked by other prisoners before the execution date draws near. it could be argued that it is a violation of rights (although what rights a criminal does/should have is debatable).
PROS: you have effectively eliminated that person's threat to society - no chance of escape or parole (and what the ******** is up with cali's "we'll sentence you to life but you're eligible for parole every so often?). it provides closure for the victims families. it goes back to the whole "eye for an eye" style justice.
what do i think? i think that we should do away with suicide watch. i think that we shouldnt put prisoners in solitary confinement for their own protection - men like charles manson should go back into the main population and if someone tries to kill him again, dont try to stop it. i think we should bring back the chain gangs and prison work groups - make them build roads and railways, make them mine and harvest crops. get some good productivity from them. i also think rapists should be castrated.

I assume it's going to be something I'm not going to like very much.

I do not believe that the government should have that kind of power , So while I do believe eye for an eye is valid, I do not believe in the death penalty. I guess that leaves good old fashioned vigilantist action.

Hey, since we have this discussion going, I figured I'd just mention this.
My uncle (mom's brother) just got his sentence. He's done time for smaller stuff before, but it looks like the state of Arizona takes child molestation seriously, espescially when there are multiple counts. So, unless he lives to be about 135 years old, looks like he's set for life.
Only down side to this is that AZ got to him before New Mexico had the chance to fry him for attempted murder. He says it was self defense, but in my experience, you really don't go to another guy's house carrying a loaded handgun to defend yourself very often. The guy did survive, so that's good. I'd just like to see him convicted there too, but I guess that's a moot point now.

Unfortunately my grandparents still think that the world is picking on him, so they're on the verge of each having a heart attack. But yeah, I'm happy to know he'll be spending the rest of his life behind bars.
