Toby looked up as Dari turned and noticed the stapled gash at the front of his head. Jesus! He gave Dari a look and Dari just waved him off.
Why would anyone do that? Well, Dari thought, for the same reason they had been kicked out of the Fletcher household. "Yes, I'm fine.Thank you.There's a vending machine right down the hall. I'll see you soon?"
Toby was hoping Maia wasn't looking at all of the bruising, the cleaned gashes, christ, it looked bad. A bit of anger flared in him. They were going to catch these bastards...

"Are you sure?" came the concerned inquiry. "Yes, yes. I'm on my way now. Let's See... GPS..." The line went dead.
Once the call ended, Maia went to Dari's side. She studied him silently for a long moment, eyes taking in bruises, before gently hugging him.

Ah, the second hang-up of the day. People did that when they were worried, he supposed. He turned to Cody, unsure if he was still awake.
"Your mom's coming."
Dari made a bit of a face at the hug but hesitantly returned it. Ow. Ow ow ow. Pain was still so new and so ow. He had denied heavy painkillers himself and was just on some aspirin. "I'm okay, Maia."

"You're okay," Maia echoed. She didn't look convinced, though. She took his hand and turned to study Cody.
Cody's eyes fluttered open at Dari's voice. "Good," he said. He seemed to notice Toby then, and smiled slightly. "Hey," he greeted. He tried to push himself up into a sitting position and winced.

"I am," Dari said, and then looked toward Cody. Cody was worse. Cody was human. He had parts to break and fracture and puncture and all sorts of awful things. Dari was just a disguised bag of slime.
"Hey," Toby said, and raised a hand, "It's alright, you stay down. You had a rough night. How are you feeling? Good and high I hope." He eyed the IV drip.

Maia's lips were pursed and her eyes were suspiciously shiny as she looked between Cody and Dari. They both looked awful.
"Mhmmmm," Cody agreed, and reached for Toby's hand. "C'mere, dadmode."

Toby laughed and took Cody's hand gently, noting his bruised knuckles. He dragged a chair with him and sat down next to Cody while Dari sank into the chair on the opposite side and offered his lap to Maia.

"You've got to make sure my boyfriend rests," Cody said, looking to Toby. "Please? He's hurt too." Dari kept saying he was fine. But he couldn't be. Cody'd seen those guys go after him.
Maia sat on Toby's lap, looking to Cody. Poor guy. Poor Dari. "Do you know how long they want to keep you?" she asked.

Toby nodded. "I will, don't worry." Most of Cody's damage seemed to be to the head. Dari had looked like a hug hurt. What in the world had happened.
"The nurse said a couple days," Dari said. Technically he was supposed to be in his own bed but he preferred to stay by Cody's side. "I think they just want to make sure no other problems crop up."

"Good. They had a crowbar." Cody seemed to teeter between awake and asleep for a moment. He shook his head slightly, as if to clear it. "They wouldn't stop." He released Toby's hand and reached for Dari's.

Toby grimaced. So they'd planned it then, if they had thought to bring a weapon. What kind of sick ******** did this to poor unassuming young men?
Dari took Cody's hand and wouldn't make eye contact with Toby, who was currently glaring.
"They knocked Cody out cold, so I protected him with my own body," Dari said, "They were very violent. Took him by the hair so the others could take hits at him. I'm drawing them later." Once Cody was peacefully asleep again. "I don't trust police sketch artists."

"He saved me," Cody looked to Dari. There was guilt written on his face. If he hadn't been so easily taken down, Dari wouldn't have gotten so hurt. "I'm sorry, love."
"They'll definitely find them, with your work," Maia said. "They need to be locked up." And then have a crowbar taken to their--no... She looked to Dari, concerned. "Are you sure you're up to it?"

Dari shook his head. "I'm sorry I wasn't better able to protect you."
"Did you at least beat them up good?" Toby asked.
"Yeah. I got a few good punches in."
"Good," Toby agreed.
"Up to what?" Dari asked, looking over to Maia.

"You saved my life," Cody argued. "No one could've done better." He looked to Toby then, and smiled slightly. "I got some guys too. So they'll be bruised. You shoulda seen Dari though! He was awesome."
"Drawing," Maia said. Dari had to be emotionally wrecked after tonight. He wasn't in good shape physically, either, but he was doing a good job of hiding that. To have several men come attack you and the person you loved... Maia couldn't imagine it.

Dari shook his head. He should have tried harder. He should have looked out better. Something. Anything.
"Well, we're combat trained," Toby said with a smile and gave Dari a wink. Whatever he had done, it was a good job.
"Yeah. I'm fine." He was torn into pieces but he was fine. It'd be a good outlet for his anger, or at least he hoped so.
