"Well, technically pets aren't allowed in the suites but Seamus isn't quite a pet, so I don't see a problem. He just has to be able to go out before he pees on things." Seamus' ears folded back for a few seconds. "So staying overnight is probably not a good idea, unless you want a litter pan."
Then the topic turned back to food. "I did make it, yes. I'd be glad to show you some time. It's really very easy from scratch." He came back to pour the sauce into the pan and mix the noodles with a little left over for anyone who might want more sauce. "Forks should be right in there," he said, motioning to an upper drawer. All of the apartments were set up the same, so it was easy to navigate from one to the other.

"I'll let him out when he likes. He's good at making himself heard, aren't you Seamus?" He had demonstrated that in the hall. He'd come to find her, and when He hadn't he'd struck up a noise no one could ignore.
"Really?" So she'd learn how to make sauce too, great! And it was easy? Even better. She took two forks from the drawer indicated.

"That's for sure," Toby agreed. Seamus didn't seem bothered by the implication and just sat down to silently beg for more. He made himself especially cute, squinting and purring and kneading the floor, presumably in the hopes of it compounding his chances of getting what he wanted.
Chicken was added to the mix and it made its way onto a plate. "Tell me when to stop," he said to Maia as he loaded up her share.

Maia was convinced that Seamus needed another piece of chicken. He was certainly waiting patiently enough. She reached down to pet him, briefly. "You're spoiled, you know."
That didn't mean she wouldn't be spoiling him further.
"Oh, that's enough," she smiled at Toby. She took her plate. "Where do we eat?" she asked.

"We can eat out there," Toby said with a nod toward the living room as he began to fill his own plate. The dining area was well away from everything else and he knew Dari wouldn't mind so long as nobody got sauce in his carpet. Seamus continued purring but offered a trembling 'meow!' in response to Maia's insinuation.
Out of habit he followed Maia to the couch, plopped down beside her, and grabbed the remote to flick on the TV. It was straight to Food Network where an older woman was making some sort of fresh veggie dish. Toby considered this good dining entertainment. It certainly helped the appetite. Dari leaned back to watch.
"Sometimes I wish I could experience food like you," the alien said, turning to the others.
"Sometimes I wish I could see colors and dimensions completely unfathomable by man," Toby responded.
"When you're born with the ability it's not nearly as exciting."

Maia watched as the tv flickered on. Oh, television about cooking! Huh. Shed have to learn what channel this was, it'd be useful. "But it's inefficient," Maia reminded Dari. "You know. There might be a way you could though..." She fell silent to consider this. She took a bite of her pasta, offered a bit of chicken to Seamus, but seemed to be lost in thought.
"There's stories about fairies who disguise themselves. When shifting isn't a born talent. And they take on traits of what they're disguised as. We should find whatever they're using. Then you might be able to taste things."

"Oh, no, that's true," Toby said with a nod, "but it's not so easy for outsiders to manage."
Seamus leaned in and licked the sauce off of the bit of chicken before taking the piece. Dari watched him curiously.
"Abnormality makes the world all the more intresting," Dari added. Really he couldn't fathom taste any more than others could fathom his own senses. It was just this abstract idea posed as someone else's truth.

"I suppose not," Maia mused. "We'd have to get a powerful fae to make us one. And no luck, I haven't got any magic." The only thing she could do was shift, and that wasn't useful when it came to helping Dari.
"You're right. I just thought, if you really wanted to." She shrugged, dropping a noodle to Seamus before taking another bite herself.

"Lori's got some. Nothing that strong, though. Everyone underestimates him because of the beard." Toby gestured to his own stubbled chin when he spoke and then continued to eat.
"I have none," Dari agreed with a nod.
"Mm, me neither."

"I didn't." Maia said, "But I've never met an elf before Lori. Are elves not supposed to have beards?" She took time to wrap noodles around her fork. "Sure you do, Dari. You can change into a seal! And a mermaid, and any thing you want. That's sort of like magic."
She ate in silence for a while, and after eating the majority of what was on her plate, set her plate down for Seamus. "Where do you think a fae would have enough power?" She asked. She wanted to help Dari's wish come true, even temporarily. Toby's... Well. That was impossible.

"Well, no. That's where pop culture comes in again," Toby explained, "Human media says elves are two-feet tall and wear hats with jingle bells and make toys or are tall, lithe blonde individuals with no body hair to speak of. As it turns out, they're as varied as anyone else. I've met some pretty stereotypical fae, though."
Seamus looked up at Maia, still begging, and gave no response. How could he? He was a cat. He began to devour what was left of Maia's plate, getting cream sauce all over his face and whiskers.
"Oh, me?" Toby asked, "Breyer, probably. We're talking immense power here, I'm not even sure if such a thing exists any more, and if it does how to get it."
"It's alright," Dari reassured the selkie, "I'm happy just the way I am." He was also not magic, just biologically different than the average human... or anything else, really.

"So pop culture is really a bunch of lies?" Maia asked. Lies about things people didn't really understand. "I've heard about Santa's elves. Are they the same species that made shoes?" She looked to Toby. "I'd like to hear about the fae you've met."
"I'll research," she promised. "I will. And not just for Dari, I'll research so we can find them and protect them if they need it. All that power must attract attention, if they're out near humans." Just her presence had, after all. She didn't want some fae cornered due to great power. Or for any reason.
She hugged Dari. "Want to swim later?" she asked. "I bet you'll win again."

"Well, we can't be totally sure. Nowadays it's all just legend. Research can only go so far." He was done with his own food and took Maia's plate from the floor. Seamus, not finished, splayed out his claws and swatted at Toby. Toby took it anyway. "Pop culture is only mostly lies. There's truth here and there, but nobody believes we exist, so they just make s**t up."
Oh my. Dari had started a fire under Maia with just one little comment. Maybe he should have kept his mouth shut. He accepted the hug, though, and nodded.
"Certainly, if you would like to. Tired of games?"
Toby went about washing the dishes, not hearing and thus not demanding he try to beat Maia at Snake.

"Well everything's a legend," Maia observed. "Selkies and aliens and--everything," she finished awkwardly. She reached down to pet Seamus. "You made him mad," she said, frowning at Toby. "Its okay kitty," she petted the cat sidhe reassuringly. He'd get another treat later. "Oh, I see. So they're based on legends, and then people add stuff. What do they say about selkies?"
She shook her head at Dari. "Nah. I still have to beat Toby. But later, you can show him how fast you are."

"He's gonna get the trots and it's gonna be all your fault," Toby replied. Most cats were lactose intolerant. Seamus had a delicate belly as it was so whether he was intolerant or not they had to be careful.
"Alright," Dari nodded.
Toby spoke up again from the kitchen, putting the dishes in the dishwasher after rinsing even knowing they were just going to sit there clean forever. At least they probably wouldn't get dusty.
"Selkies are pretty classic. I haven't seen much made-up information. Little liberties, maybe. Talking English while in seal form regardless of a lack of lips. Forgetting about their pelts and remembering randomly one day. Silly things." He returned to the couch.
Seamus, clearly offended, jumped up into Maia's lap nearer to Dari than Toby. Toby took the opportunity to steal the laptop. "What did she get?"
"I put it in Notepad."
"Hm." Toby checked Maia's score and went about playing himself.
