Dari gave a thoughtful frown and shook his head.
"It's a hobby. Everyone has them." He was trying his best to draw from sight, but the angle wasn't really allowing for it much. He was capturing a natural ease in Cody, though. It was something only he and perhaps Cody's parents got to see, and he loved the way he smiled back, and the background he had to work with. Honestly, most of it was background, but again, it was interesting!

"Hm, I still think you're good enough to make it a career, when you retire," Cody said, and smiled. A bird flew by, and his smile broadened. He loved nature, especially in Spring. Everything seemed so alive.
"Know any campfire stories? We were--distracted last night." His smile was definitely teasing now.

"Definitely distracted," Dari agreed with a chuckle. "I don't really, no. I know a few joke ones. Generally federal agents don't try to terrify other federal agents on overnight gigs, and Toby's only a good story-teller when he's exaggerating the truth."

"I know a couple, but they're lame sauce compared to what you do daily." What federal agent wanted to hear about the monster of the green lagoon or the woman with a green ribbon around her neck? "I'll tell you them anyway," He added, smirking.

"Sure, if you'd like to," Dari said with a nod. He had once picked up a book of scary stories meant for kids from the nineties, and he remembered the illustrations were terrifying. It was odd, what used to pass as appropriate for children then versus now. He drew in the bird that had flown by and started on detailing Cody's complex hair.

"Okay," Cody said, and smiled. He began to tell Dari the story of a ghost that haunted this very mountain (but not quite the same spot). Apparently it was a well known legend, but Cody was clearly taking creative license. The ghost in question seemed to kidnap people. "Anyway, dad used to tell me if I went wandering too far, it'd get me," he finished with a shrug. "I never did."

"Well then it worked!" Dari replied with a grin. "Has anyone else ever told you the same story? Because if not, I think your father may be the originator." He looked Cody over, ruffled his curls, and smiled.
"It's sort of like the wendigo, no?" Except wendigos were real. Not the whole myth, but bits of it, as per usual.

"I bet he was," Cody said, "I've never heard it anywhere else." He paused, looking to Dari. "The wendigo?" he asked. "Tell me about it."

"It's a horrible, shrieking nature spirit beast that captures people and makes them run until their feet burn off, then pulls them up into the sky to eat them," Dari said casually, then grinned at Cody. "It goes all the way back to Native American tradition."

Cody's eyes widened. A spirit that made people run until their feet burnt off?! He wrinkled his nose and then laughed. "Of course it eats them. Everything ends with them getting eaten." He kissed Dari's cheek.

"Well that's not true. There's a lot of spirits that'll leave people alone, or even be kind to them." Err... "Well, mythically anyway. People still tend to show fear or run, though. If a ghost can carry on a casual conversation with you, why is it frightening when you find out he or she is a ghost?"

Cody nodded. "Like fairies. Brownies and stuff." they were supposed to be helpful. "I suppose it's because death itself is scary. I don't think I'd mind meeting a ghost, as long as they didn't act like the ones in movies."

Dari almost said "most of them do" but decided instead to shrug and show Cody his work. It was an odd angle and mostly rock and trees beyond the cliff, but there is was. Cody was watching the bird go by, not facing the viewer.

Cody smiled at the picture and looked to Dari. "You really capture every detail," he admired. He kissed his cheek. "I love you."

"Thank you," he said, "and I love you too." He kissed Cody's cheek in return and then closed his sketchbook and set it aside.
"Selfie sesh?" He made a duck face and offered Cody a peace sign.
