My story is not a grand one, do you still wish to know how I came to be of service to my King? Very well. I was a child when I first met the man I was to serve. I had no home to claim and no food in my stomach so I stole a small jewel from his purse. He saw me. He looked right at me; the pure look of disappointment on his face was enough for me to hand the jewel back and run off. I was ashamed of my actions, I knew what I had done was wrong but I was hard pressed for food and shelter. My king followed me to the small box that I’d taken shelter in. I heard a deep voice ask for me to face him and speak my name. I was terrified. So shaking like a leaf clinging to the trees on a fall day I did as commanded. His words still ring clearly in my head.
“Cyrene, there are many types of evils in this world. One of them is stealing, but a larger one is to see a starving child and do nothing for them. You have a good heart and mind; you were able to give the jewel back. And so, I would like to thank you.”
To my surprise he handed me a loaf of bread and the very jewel I had thought to take. I accepted the bread but didn’t take the jewel. Told him I’d feel better if I had earned it. He took me to the palace and at first I was merely one to help his cooks in the kitchen. I loved the job because I loved food and watched everything that had happened within it, learning all that I could.
I was a teen when I would leave my kitchen duties and my life would forever change. It was around dinner time, so the kitchen was bustling to get the king and his wife their food. There was a stranger in the kitchen that day; at first I thought he was merely new to the kitchens but his eyes bothered me. From my time in the streets I had seen the eyes of thieves and killers, and this stallion had those eyes. He moved over both the king and queens plate and I had seen something shine from his hand. I didn’t allow myself to think. I grabbed a kitchen knife and raced after the male blocking the exit as I screamed for the guards and told the others to toss out those plates. The King had saved me as a child, both from hunger and from a life of crime. The least I could do was to attempt to stop his assassin from leaving.
The assassin did, unfortunately, get away, but the king hand me put into training. He asked for me to become a knight and protect his kingdom. As you can see, I did.
