Hello Jaz biggrin nice to see you, hope your PC holds out!

i've never had sushi, i know you 2 ladies love it, what can you tell me about it?

There are so many different kinds! My favorite is the spicy tuna roll, which has a good flavor to it. Different sushi places make it differently too. The place where I went today had it with thin cucumber spears next to the spicy tuna mix in the middle, and wrapped in seaweed with rice outside that! I like when they have sticky rice (or sesame seeds) on the outside! I also like philidelphia rolls, which have cream cheese in them. Some people (like Jason) find the seaweed wrap has a fishy taste/smell they don't like, but I don't think it does. In fact, I find raw fish tastes less fishy than cooked fish! It has a really mild flavor and nice smooth texture. My friend who introduced me to the proper way to eat sushi (mix some wasabi into the soy sauce and dip the roll in it so one whole cut side is coated, and then eat in one bite! (chopsticks are required for this, unless you want to use your hands..) and before that, I'd only tried california rolls (vegetables only) at chinese buffets, and I didn't eat it right (my mom said to put some wasabi and a strip of pickled ginger on it) and it wasn't as good that way. Technically, the pickled ginger is supposed to be to "cleanse your palate between bites" and the wasabi mixed in the soy sauce. I don't even think I used to dip my cali rolls in soy sauce! No wonder I didn't acquire a strong liking for it back then! Oh, what I was saying is that my friend who taught me to eat sushi right doesn't even like cooked fish! But she loves sushi!

Oooh in this image it has cucumber as well as avocado and sesame seeds! Mmmm!

And sashimi is what you call the whole strips of fish laid on a piece of sticky rice, and sometimes secured down by a vertical strip of seaweed. And those sometimes have a touch of wasabi between the fish and the rice which can be quite a spicy kick! I really like those too, only I haven't tried very many yet (mostly due to cost.) I like the marbled tuna or the salmon best.

surprised that image looks very, very tasty!
i'm a bit of a novice with chopsticks but i can manage,i enjoy eating with them once i've got the knack, but if i move my grip i've had it!
The last chinese meal i had though, i managed most of it with chopsticks, even my rice of which i was most proud! lol

I love sushi and California Rolls with some Wasabi/soy sauce. I love several types actually, but my sister is the expert who does the ordering because I do not know most of the names.
My husband was stationed in Okinawa while he was a marine and said there is nothing better than getting it over there... I can believe it.
I smiled when fawn said her friend who taught her sushi does not like fish... I do not like fish either (anymore, I seem to have out grown my taste for any fish with scales) but I do love shell fish and such, and besides the fact there is enough rice in sushi to make up for the seafood aspect razz
I will have to look harder, I have NEVER heard of a Philidelphia Roll lol

mmmmmmm fawN did a good job of describing...except sashimi is slices of fish w/o rice at all...nigiri is slices of fish w/ rice underneath.

Techinally yes you are supposed to eat a piece of ginger after each piece of sushi to cleanse the palate, but I tried that and am not a big fan. And sushi purists will tell you not to dip you sushi at all but to bow to the sushi chef and eat it plain with however he garnishes it. I however *love* the taste of dipping my sushi in soy saice with wasabi mixed in. Except the spicy tuna rolls. Those never need any help IMHO.

Like simlizzy, my hunnee was in Japan when in the marines and developed a taste for sushi there. It was our first dinner date as a matter of fact. We went to a local sushi place and ordered just about everything on the menu for me to try. I discovered I pretty much like everything but sweet shrimp...but love tuna the most...with salmon a close second. I actually *hate* salmon cooked, but love it sashimi, nigiri or in a philadelphia roll! And actually one of the best of those I had was @ a place where they had a traditional philly roll (salmon & cream cheese wrapped in sushi nori) which was lightly battered and deep fried just enough to make it warm but not cook the salmon *yum*

Speaking of...I don't find the nori fishy at all...I love it! I suppose sushi is an acquired taste...and agreeing with fawN and lizzy I think sushi is much better than cooked fish (altho I like that too) especially tuna which has a kind of "buttery" flavor and quality to it. Once you try tuna sushi or sashimi you will never eat it cooked again.

this made me laugh cuz the first date kevin and I ever went on was for sushi and of course they give you chopsticks. My mom went with us on the date (this sounds weird I know...but she and I are very close and he wanted to impress me by taking my mom out as well) and i remember she asked for silverware and I refused to give up on trying chopsticks. I swore I would learn how to use them and I did. I'm no expert, but I pride myself on being able to pick up a single pea with my chopsticks @ dinner now. At least I know I wouldn't starve if all I had to eat w/ were chopsticks lol.

I'm still here guys. Huggles you all. I've just been a bit busy and I'm getting another stupid cold.

I had my first experience with sushi in January and really enjoyed it. I don't remember the names but I had tuna and salmon and it was really good. I don't know if I could ever master the chopsticks though.

I was SO craving more spicy tuna rolls yesterday after typing about it! Now I will today too!

And regarding the first image, the food made into plushies reminds me I wanted to tell you all that I saw Peeps plushies at KB Toys today and HAD to get a little box of the bunnies!

I don't think Jason knew how to use chopsticks until he met me. He learned pretty quickly! And Jade doesn't get the opportunity often, but she's learning just as my sister and I did.. stick chopsticks in front of them when they're little and let them figure it out by experimentation and watching. She starts off with the 'one in each hand' way, and progresses to using them like scissors. My sister and I brush up on our chopsticks skills when we're dining out together by having 'Ice Wars' where each of us tries to move as many ice cubes from our ice water into the other person's ice water as fast as we can. rofl I think it wouldn't work very well with the plastic chopsticks mom has, but works great with the disposable bamboo ones!

I couldn't find a bigger image. But the ones I bought, the plushies are slightly larger than the marshmallow versions. They also had medium sized plushies that were bout.. 6" or 7" tall? And then even bigger ones made of a stretchy spadex material and filled with tiny styrofoam beans. KB Toys has had other plushies made out of that stuff before, and Jade has a pink teddy bear from Bed Bath and Beyond made from the same stuff too. It's a popular material for teen girl throw pillows too. The smaller plushies are a little furry though, like beanie babies. smile Oh and they had Peeps baskets too, made out of the same stuff as the smaller and medium plushies, and I was tempted to get me one and fill it with 3 of the medium plushie bunnies, but it would have costed about $15 + tax, while the box of 4 bunnies (one purple, one pink, one blue, one yellow) was $5.99 I think.
