Eustace smiled sincerely at Daiyu. 'This must be what it's like having a big sister,' she supposed, though they likely got along better than many siblings must have. She didn't know much about Daiyu yet, but from what the woman herself had told her, they were very similar. It relieved Eustace that she wasn't the only one like that in the Fort and that she would probably grow out of it. "Th-thank you for the e-encouragement, Daiyu," Eustace said, a little embarassed.

Her head turned toward another voice, thankful that the attention was away from herself. She had never taken arms against her own father and truth be told, the idea was disturbing. That the only thing deterring the onslaught was fear of the concequences from White Shadow authorities was even more bizarre. Eustace was always taught that respect to one's elders was the most important and, all things considering, basic of respects. Since he had asked about both herself and Daiyu, she thought it would be appropriate to shift the attention to him for a while.

"Wh-where are you f-from? Why are y-you here?" Eustace didn't repeat the last of his questions. Profanity was taboo where she came from. She felt guilty even remembering the word in Rayan's voice.

LunarFlare looked at Zephyr and then at Rayan. He wasn't sure whether the older wolf meant Lunar was being disrespectful or if it was the human. Since his resolution earlier, however, it didn't matter either way and simply assumed he was referring to the human. If Zephyr had meant Lunar, he would use that excuse, anyway.

In spite of Zephyr's explanation, LunarFlare buried it again. It wasn't like he was going to keep it anyway. The only item he found buried that he had kept was the boot and its tattered remains were left somewhere on the floor in Eustace's barrack. Lunar patted down the mud to a uniform level and returned to searching around, making note of the door knob's location so that if he caught its scent -rust had a rather strong smell- again, he wouldn't foolishly try to dig it up again.

Seeing the curiousity and confusion from both women, Rayan immediately regretted mentioning his father. Growing up in the Fort, he had grown accustomed to military formalities plus the other children bragging about their parents, so it had become natural for him to speak of his father by rank. But he kept forgetting that those from the City were still in awe of wolriders in general, much less when he revealed that he was son of a Sergeant, retired or not.

"Yes, a retired Sergeant that decided to have an affair with a cook that worked in the Fort, which resulted in my birth," he explained in a dull tone, having stated these very facts several times already. Rayan tilted his head towards Eustace, smiling as she stuttered even when asking simple questions. He had the urge to slap her on the back as he did with his shy male friends, but that would probably hurt her.

"I am from White Shadow and I am here because I bonded to a wolf," he responded cheekily with a playful grin. But in a more serious tone, Rayan continued, "But if you're asking why I became a wolfrider, it's because it seemed like the appropriate thing to do. When you grow up in the Forts, you're pretty much expected to go to the Academy."

Wanting to drop the subject, Rayan watched as the young wolf buried the doorknob again, deciding to answer Daiyu's previous query. "Yes, the doorknob from Damien's bathroom door." Rayan smirked as he recalled jamming the door before he had pulled the doorknob off. "Took it off last night when he was gone..." He paused in deep thought. "I wonder where he was so late at night... visiting Anna?"

"Of course. I hope you know that you are always welcome to come and talk with me, if the need arises," replied the young woman to Eustace, her lips curved in a smile. Eustace looked a bit less tense than she had before. Hopefully, the girl would relax further. Daiyu herself remembered how uncomfortable the first few weeks of her recruitment days were, when she had no one to share a friendship with.

Head turning, she watched Rayan as he gave his answer. She had to admit, he was a handsome man, even if his personality did not appeal to her. Daiyu blinked. He did it...because it was expected? If she had done what was expected of her, she would be working as a cotton weaver in the City, not riding on the back of a huge blue wolf.

Rayan's voice intruded her thoughts. She gasped slightly, taking in his words. "You...you mean Captain White? That is his doorknob?!" The thought of taking a superior's personal property astounded her. She knew that the two boys where friends of sort, but still! "Sh...shouldn't you give that back?" she asked meekly.

Zephyr was bored. Very, very bored. Yawning hugely, he began sniffing around, hoping to catch a scent of...something. Anything. Then...there it was! A small animal, burrowed in the ground. He gave a small yip, his way to tell Daiyu he had found something, and trotted forward. Near a thin, lithe tree, Zephyr began digging, searching for the warm-blooded creature that filled his nose with good smells.

The Apprentice smiled and thanked Daiyu again. She could see herself making fast friends with Daiyu. That is, if she didn't find some way to mess things up, which was uncommon, but it didn't stop her from worrying all the same. "S-so,' Eustace cleared her throat. "Why did you come h... here?" Her voice was calmer. It was easier to talk now. After all, if she and Daiyu were siblings, then there would be no reason to feel nervous at all. If she continued to think of her that way, then it should continue to be so easy.

Eustace wasn't sure how to react to Rayan's answer. He seemed so passionless, if that could ever describe someone who seemed so dissolute. It reminded her of herself, probably the only similarity she would ever find between herself and Rayan. It made her feel comfortable knowing they weren't complete opposites. If she could convince herself that they had something in common, it would make speaking with him or just being around him infinitely easier. As a result, when she spoke, something unintentionally rude came out. "That sounds... dull." Eustace covered her mouth. "S-s-s- I-I'm so... I didn't m-mean-!" The continuation was muffled and the words were almost indiscriminate.

And there went all of her progress.

LunarFlare paused his search to inspect the older wolf's movement. He got a bit closer, sniffing in that direction and he caught the scent too. His heart rate increased and he felt that instinctual adrenaline rush. It was like when Lunar chased after that rodent with his father. But this was another wolf's prey. It took every ounce of his self control to stay where he was. If Zephyr wanted his help or decided the prey was of no interest -which was what LunarFlare was desperately hoping- then he would all too happy to step in.

Rayan understood the natural admiration most people from the City had for wolfriders, much less one of rank - which was why he threw around his father's name - but the awe was significantly lessened when you lived in the Fort and grew up around wolves all your life. Then you realized that the life of a wolfrider was not one of glamor, but rather hardwork and a lot of sacrifices. During his time at the academy, and even now as he observed the new apprentices transfer in, he was always surprised to see how many of them would be disappointed by the truth of being in this profession.

"No, it is very dull," he dispelled Eustace's apologies with a dismissive wave of his hand, allowing an amused smile to touch his face. Rayan was finding himself relaxing more and more recently, and he found this current conversation quite entertaining - a different pace from the last few months, but he welcomed the change. Because in one short month, reality would hit harder than ever and all of them will need to step up their game to survive. But for now... he playfully nudged Eustace's arm with his elbow and waggled his eyebrows suggestively. "But it's definitely starting to look up now."

The sound from Zephyr caused Rayan to look towards the wolf for a moment, observing the stance and actions as a sign that the predator had discovered a prey. A lifetime around wolves and he could subconsciously predict with near perfect accuracy a wolf's intentions from their behavior. The former Sergeant glanced at Daiyu when she seemed to be shocked by his comment, and he laughed softly at her suggestion. "Now what's the point of going through all that trouble to steal his doorknob if I'm to give it back?"

An evil grin crept onto his face as Rayan recalled what he had done early this morning in the dead of the darkness. "But don't worry, I'm sure he'll notice that there's not furniture in his office soon, and I'll be sure to return those as soon as he asks." Even now, he was still amazed by how much he could bribe the Fort teens to do by simply offering them a ride on a wolf - which never happened, but that's besides the point.
