...an invitation by a child was as good as any, wasn't it? Kay gave a little smile and a nod, finishing the last bite of his sandwich and following Laial inside.

"I do!" Happily Laial opened the door, slipping his sandals off before stepping inside, lightfootedly. "I'm home~" he sang out with a kind of malicious glee.
"You sneaked out again, Laial?" Evan came out of the kitchen, looking a bit despondant, drooping a little bit and half-covered with flour, holding a spoon covered with pancake batter.

Kay just smiled and waved to the man, closing the door gently behind him.
"Hello. I know it's strange for me to be here, but I'm Kaydon...a teacher at DCorp? I met your son at the park and thought it best to walk him home." He'd noticed how embarrassed Laial seemed to be about asking Kay to walk with him, and so decided to take all the blame himself.

"Oh, I... hello..." Evan blushed, looking at his pink apron and smiling sheepishly at the teacher. "It's nice to meet you, Kaydon. I'm Evan Aisley, Laial's father..."
"He means he adopted me when my other mother gave me up..." Laial said, holding the anger from his voice. "But, but dad, he said he'd teach me science!" He couldn't help smiling, even if he usually pretended to be standoffish to Evan.
"Really? That's very nice of him..." Evan looked up, smiling at Kay.

Kay nodded. He knew quite well the switching and adopting of all of the corporation's children.
"Indeed. Your son showed great interest, and I thought that starting him off early wouldn't hurt. That is, if it's alright with you. I understand not wanting to entrust your child to a stranger."

In being mentioned, the cheerful dragon came slithering out of the kitchen with a mouthful of pancake, chirring gleefully. "Lai!" She circled around the nautilus boy's legs twice, like a happy puppy. Laial giggled and obliged her, bending to rub her earfins and her neck expertly.
"That she'd eat the chemicals and stuff. But Heiko's smarter than that, I told him so..." Laial said with a sigh.

Kay smiled down at the dragon. It was definitely not the one he thought he remembered from Laial's file. Oh well! We all make mistakes.
"I'm more of a biology teacher than chemistry," he said, "and I don't think any chemicals in a child's chemistry set can kill a dragon, let alone a child. Maybe give them a bit of upset-stomach, but that would teach them right quick, wouldn't it?"

"I guess you're right," Evan said with a sheepish grin. "I always got the same thing from my mom when I was a kid, so..."
"I told you so," said Laial, petting Heiko with a sigh, shaking his head.
"I know, I know... we'll see, Laial," said Evan, ruefully, eyeing the redhead. "As for you, er, sir, would you like to stay for dinner? We're having pancakes --"
As if on cue, the smoke alarm went off. Evan paled, yelped, and hurried back to the stove, where a panful of pancake batter had blackened and was smoking in an alarming manner.

Kay rushed after the man and, as soon as he saw the smoking pancakes, burst out laughing. It wasn't polite, he knew, but it was charmingly silly.
"I...I wouldn't want to impose!" he yelped over the screech of the alarm.

"Oh, balls," Evan muttered as he reached out with a hand to smack the smoke alarm, which sputtered to a sulky forlorn halt. "I'm so bad at making first impressions anyway, and now my pancakes catch fire!" He scooted the charred pancake into the trash, sighing.
"At least there's plenty of pancake batter left," said Laial, coughing and fanning the smoke a little, reaching up with a tentacle to catch a smudge on the rim of the bowl, so he could taste the batter.

Kay saw the movement, and didn't care enough to stop him.
"Frankly, this is the best impression I've gotten of anyone in a long time," he laughed, "Everyone's so...arrogant and angry these days."

"Well, I'm not..." Sheepishly, Evan returned the pan to the battered stove, sighing as he ladled another helping of pancakey goodness into the bottom of it.
Feeling a twinge of guilt, Laial blushed, wrapping his tentacles around himself in nervousness.

"Neither am I, and neither is your son," he replied, his smile easily heard in his voice, "Is there anything I can do? Set the table, perhaps?"

"You can... if you want to," Evan said, turning to smile a little, winningly, tilting his head. "The syrup's in the fridge, too... if you don't mind? And Laial, go and wash your hands and tentacles for dinner, all right?" Evan smiled at his son, chuckling.
"All right... but don't let him talk you out of the lessons, please?" Pleadingly he shot a look at Kay, then before Evan could protest, he fled for the bathroom, with Heiko squealing after him.
