Lural had decided to stroll down to the water front for a day of shopping. Somehow, she had escaped without alerting any if her mini-hoard of personal demons that she was going out. The last thing she needed was her gaggle of over excited winis who would be running up and down the shops terrorizing anything they could. Lural shuddered a little thinking about the last time she was shopping with one of her winis tagging along.
Or when she had gone out to eat.
Or when she was making a plant delivery.
And that time when she was…
Lural shook her head. But this time was different! She was free from those demons. For now.
She entered Gambino Outfitters with a wave to Sasha, and mentally preparing herself to be bombarded with strange stories about shells that looked like celebrities, or something equally drull.
“You know, a cute pair of shoes would like, totally finish your outfit. But totally something dark, like leather thigh highs.” Lural pretended not to hear the voice as she walked past the shoes completely towards the racks of skirts. “Oooh, you could totally go for something like totally posh, you know? I totally dig those kukui necklaces. Though the bracelets that old hag has in Barton are like totally better.” Lural glanced up and was about to respond to Sasha when she noticed the shop keep was on the phone on the other side of the store. “OH! You like can totally hear me! Bitchen.”
With a glance around the shop, she saw a rather vibrant looking koi demon perched upon a shelf, nestled between the displays of inner tubes and arm floaties. No. Not another one. Lural shook her head and turned. She waved goodbye to Sasha and was leaving the shop.
“HEY! You totally can’t go without a goodbye!” The demon cried out before jumping with the grace of a frantic cat as she scrambled after who she saw as the only human who could see her. “Come on, you can totally hear me I know you can!” She insisted as Lural opened the door. The demon looked like she would burst into tears. Lural glanced down at the demon and waved her to follow her trough the door.
“Come on.” She said softly to the demon. The fish’s face lit up as she pranced out of the store.
“I totally felt it. I knew it. Just knew you could see me! Like the instant I saw you I was thinking all ‘oh em gee, that’s the one!’ and junk. You’re like, special or something and all different from the others.”
“It’s probably because I live with others of your kind.” She said softly, looking around, making sure no one was staring at her for talking to nothing.
“Bitchen. So it’s like cool if I follow you then? Not like you really have a choice. I’ve like, decided you’re totally going to be my human. You like… need a fashion guide. Seriously. What’s with that lack of shoes? Are you like one of those retro neo hippies ‘n junk? Oh, am I being like totally rude or what? I’m Lala.”

It was another of those odd jobs. Though this one by far took the cake in strange. Lural found herself sitting at what would be considered a renaissance fair… if not for the fact that everyone around was dressed in what Lural felt was cosplay. After the 5th elf archer walked past, Lural knew this was going to be one long, strange week.
A friend of hers was supposed to be recording a story for the local news about this medieval battleground. It was somewhere between LARP and a war re-enactment. Aside from her camera, there was no technology in sight. Though one of the tents housed a cooling unit where the food for the “camp” was stored. But that wasn’t important right now. Unfortunately, Lural found that no matter what, she had to take on a persona that would fit with the theme of the camp. She picked at a thread on the poofy sleeves of her bard costume. Bards record history. So that was the roll she was taking. But… The lute? Ugh. She would have to sing of the daily battles. Not only of this camp, which seemed to be of humans and elves and fairies, but of their enemies, comprised of people dressed as orcs, trolls, and ogres.
While she was talking to people as the camp was being set up, before everyone was in their new persona, someone commented that it was like the alliance and hoard from some online game. Stupid MMOs.
The first 2 days, Lural was with the ‘alliance’ camp. She felt everyone was a little loopy for taking this so seriously… for a week. Sure, she could understand a day, or even a weekend. But 7 days?
Day three, Lural headed to the ‘hoard’ camp. It was a little ridiculous. These people not only were out fighting all day, but living like ye olde fantasy times and hadn’t bathed since this started. She was recording 2 grown men dressed as trolls fighting over like meat. They were fighting like dogs. Each had some of the food in their mouth and were pulling. Dear god, what am I DOING here? she sighed and panned the camera to some orcs who were grunting and growling something about honor. She watched them for a bit, until she caught something in the frame. She looked up and into the forest behind the men.
It was empty. She shook her head. It had to be the campfire. The dancing fire light did strange things to your eyes.
And your brain.
Someone had the brilliant idea of jumping over the fire just then and she could hear him swear in pain and annoyance. Her camera was already trained on what happened before she looked and saw him swatting at the fire that was burning up his pants leg. That was enough for tonight. She turned off the camera and headed to her tent.
Somehow, the whole feel of this camp was different then the other. It seemed darker, and the air was heavier. Unable to sleep, Lural grabbed her camera and got up. She felt maybe she should walk around the camp a little. Get familiar with it in the dark so it didn’t seem so bad. She saw someone sitting near the fire, keeping watch. She waved to whoever it was before realizing his back was to her. Lural panned the camera around the dark camp, and again, she saw something off in the bushes. Needing company suddenly, she joined the watchmen. He greeted her with a grunt. Lural held the camera up as she spoke to him.
“Keeping guard?”
“Something like that.” Short and to the point. Lural frowned, and thought of something else.
“Have you ever been startled by a wild animal, thinking it was an enemy?”
“Not since my first night on watch many, many moons ago when I was just a boy.” Lural gave him a flat look. The man looked around and reached out his hand and placed it on the camera. Lural shut it off. “There aren’t really many animals around here. Mostly rabbits. Sometimes you might see a deer or two. And since it’s nearing winter, they’re foraging for everything they can get before the winter months. I take it you saw something in the brush? Don’t worry about it. There’s nothing dangerous out here. And… don’t tell anyone I was out of character please.” Lural smiled at him.
“I won’t.” That put her mind at ease. Yes, it had to be a deer. It was too big to have been a rabbit. Of course it was a deer. After talking to the man, now back in character, for a little longer, she felt much better, and returned to bed. She was just about to crawl into her tent when she heard something rustle behind her.
“Just a deer… maybe a rabbit… It’s nothing.” But in the pit of her stomach, she had a feeling of dread. And she was being watched. Slowly, Lural looked over her shoulder. At first she thought she was looking at a mop, and someone was playing a trick on her in the dark. But… then the mop’s tail twitched.
She had to bite her tongue to keep herself from screaming in fright at the thing and she stumbled into her tent. She didn’t get the zipper down before getting a better look at what had frightened her. That frame. The legs, the tail. Even in the dark, she knew that anatomy well.
“No.” she said flatly. “No, no, no, no. Not another one.” The small demon looked up at her, head tilted.
“Yeew er different den all dah humans around ‘eer.” It spoke slowly, deliberately. “Not like dem at ahl. Er yeew not human?” She blinked at the creature before stating in a bland tone.
“I’m a sylph.” At least, that’s what her character was supposed to be. The little thing nodded and took a step closer. Lural yanked the zipper of the tent down and it got stuck half way. “s**t.” She sighed as the small demon entered the tent and sat down, looking at her. Lural took a deep breath and calmed herself down. Carefully, she freed the zipper from the thread it had caught on, and she zipped the tent closed before looking once more at the child demon. “Did you come to me because I’m different?”
“Yeh.” She replied with a bob of her head. “Ah don’t like ahl dem humans out drr. Yeew’re special. So ah came tew yeew.” Lural buried her face in her palm.
“I’m only different because I’ve dealt with your kind before. But I’m really a normal human, just like them. Well, maybe not so normal since I take care of a hoard of demons… But that’s beside the point.” The child cocked her head left.
“Yeew er human? Yeew said yeh werr sylph.”
“I was joking.”
“Dishonorable teh lie.”
“I wasn’t lying.” She looked at the child, who calmly stared back at her. She sighed. “You’re not going to leave me alone, are you?” she shook her head. “Aaaargh. Ok, fine. Let’s see… what’s your name?” The child just stared back at her. “Right… so you don’t have a name yet.”
“Ah want uh name that’s honorable.”
“What about if I called you ‘Honor’ then?”
“Blech.” She made a face of disgust at the name.
“I’m way to tired for this… Look, whatever your name is, you’re welcome to stay with me… but please PLEASE stay out of the way for the next few days. If you listen to the people around the camp, you may hear a name you like.” With a brisk nod, the little demon turned in a circle three times then flopped down half on Lural’s pillow. Lural gave up and just flopped down beside her. “Strangest job ever…” she yawned before drifting off.
The next 4 days seemed to drag on. Lural recorded the battles, interviewed the camp, and was even coaxed into singing for each camp once. She refused to do it more then that though. Durring the day, Lural never saw the child demon, and at first was hoping she had found another human. But each night the girl was sleeping in the tent, waiting for Lural to return.
It wasn’t until everything was packed, Lural had bid everyone a farewell, and loaded up her car for the drive back to her place when the child finally said something to her again.
“Kih’bar.”
“Beg pardon?” Lural glanced at the demon who was sitting on the seat next to her.
“Dunna beg. Ez dishonorable. But meh name. Ah like Kih’bar.” The child looked up at her before laying down and curling up on the plush seat.
“Kih’bar.” She nodded. “Well, take a nap. You’re going to have one heck of a time when we get home. Everyone is going to want to meet you.”

"What do you mean you aren't going?" The young female was glaring up at the elder. Her blue eyes blazed in furry.
"I mean exactly that, Harpa." The male replied, looking down at the valkyrie as her tail twitched in agitation. "I do not feel it is my time yet." He closed his deep amber eyes as the female growled at him.
"Kodran you're a fool!" Harpa snapped, swiping at his face. "Your human is dead as she has been for centuries! You should have crossed over a LONG time ago." Harpa began to pace in front of the elder male, her blond tail twitching irritably. Kodran simply stood there while she yelled at him.
"You're wrong, Harpa. While yes, her body has died long ago, her soul is still alive. If her soul had vanished completely, I would not have a choice but to return to the Everafter. As I am obviously still here, it means she has not completely died. We've been through this dance of death many times before. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must find her." Kodran made to step around her, but Harpa moved with him to stare up at him.
"What makes you think that she would even want you around? Not all humans take kindly to our kind. She could be perfectly happy without you." This made Kodran turn his eyes to her again. "I've seen it, Kodran. Some humans treat our kind as nothing more then possessions. Some aren't even that lucky. There are humans which would throw out our kind. They turn us away or throw us out like garbage!"
"And you?" Kodran asked softly. "What of you and the human you have bonded with? Have you been tossed aside or thrown out?" Harpa stared at him as he spoke. "If it is her wish to not have me around, I will leave her be, and watch her from a distance as I have in other lifetimes. But I have to see her for myself." As if that settled matters, Kodran very nearly shoved past the smaller demon.
Lural was kneeling over some upturned earth along the side of her home. The warmer then normal fall had yielded a bumper crop of pumpkins in the small garden she kept. She could hear Augustus around the side of the house yelling at Northridge as she tore through his eggplant crop. Some things never changed. Lural shook her head as she pulled the last of the plants and smoothed the soil, letting the earth rest again before she would plant again in the spring. Suddenly she heard Juillet start to growl at something. The elder female rose from lounging on the front porch and was very quickly standing close to the human.
"What's gotten into you?" Lural asked with a teasing lilt in her voice. The tawny female didn't reply, but narrowed her emerald eyes at something. Lural shifted so she could see, and draped an arm over the female's back, petting her gently to smooth her raised hackles and to try and calm her. Juillet was growling at a large male demon who was standing at the edge of Lural's front lawn, and that was all he was doing. Standing. Watching. Lural looked to Juillet and gave her a hug. "That's no way to greet a guest." She whispered before standing and facing the male fully. "Welcome." The warm smile on her face drew Kodran to step slowly closer. Juillet's growl grew louder as the male got closer, making him stop, not wanting to agitate the other elder.
"Are you lost?" Lural left Juillet's side to go and meet the male. He simply stared at her until she was close enough to touch. He lowered his head, mindful of the long horns that curled from his head.
"No, I am not lost. I've been… Looking for you." He answered softly. Lural stared at him, though kept the sweet smile on her face. "It has been-"
"It's been far too long, Kodran." Lural interrupted. The Viking male lifted his head quickly to stare at her as she reached out and laid a hand on his mane. "I recognized you as soon as I saw you."
"Then… you remember me? How is that possible?" The elder demon was in disbelief. Juillet seemed to share his curiosity, and took a few steps closer.
"Perhaps it is because I have other blood bounds now that I would remember my life bond with you." Lural knelt down and put her arms around the male's neck to hug him. "Juillet, this is Kodran. I met him more then a lifetime ago." She said, her face buried in Kodran's red mane. "Kodran, this is Juillet. One of my blood bonds, and one of my closest friends." She slowly sat back and looked to the female and smiled at her. "It's alright Juillet. He's a friend, and won't harm me." Detangling herself from the male, she put her arms around the females neck. "And he will not be replacing you." She assured her and gave the female a kiss to her nose. "Kodran, there are many demons that I'm blood-bound to in this life." This made Kodran's hair raise slightly.
"How many?" He asked, worried not only for the safety of his human, but his own, if any of them felt he was a threat. Asking made Lural have to think and count in her head.
"There are 17 others, beside you." She said softly. Kodran got a horrified look on his face that there were so many demons bound to his human in this life time. But Lural's soft smile never left her. "Don't worry… I'll protect you, Kodran."
