If you could find me a steampunk game for the play station other than FF I'd love you forever.

Dark Cloud?

Never owning a PS in my life I can't really say for sure but the screen shots look a fair bit like what you were talking about.

It's a good game, but not steampunk. It's an adventure game, you go through many worlds, the only one that might be steampunk is the underwater one.

Final Fantasy is popular, because aside from Theif, name me another Steam Punk based game thats readily available.

By the way, you can't really compare System Shock to those other games, that'd be like saying Oblivion, Deus Ex and Strangers wrath are pure shooting games. The original Half-Life wasn't all that great to be honest, it was however a spectacle and a challenge. Doom is fairly generic too, it just does what it does better then the other of the same genre. CoD 4 is it represents a huge shift in genre games, away from the obsession with WWII, and into a more modern environment.

The original Halo isn't all that bad, it represented the acceptance of vehicular combat in the mainstream (as opposed to the marginalised market the Tribes series sold too). Halo 2 and 3 was everyone jumping the band wagon, then again you could argue every popular game since the PSX was jumping the band wagon and made popular because of that fact. Lets face it apart from the indie games on the PC what was the last truly original game?

System Shock wasn't completely a shooter, but it is often considered one by the developers and the people who played it because of its combat system.

And dude, I should murder you for saying that. Doom was original for the time it came out at because it was one of the first shooters to have the first-person formula. However, Doom was the game to popularize shooters. So you can't really call Doom generic because it started the whole shooter obsession. Saying Doom is generic is like saying Alice Cooper is generic. And how was Half-Life NOT good? It is hands-down one of the best games ever made. It completely knocks Halo out of the park. Give me one GOOD reason why you say Half-Life isn't good. I'd like a reason for this absolute blasphemy towards gaming.

@ Hollow Point: BioShock is steam-punk to the core. However, it isn't on the PS2, but you can get it on the PC.

No Wolfenstein 3D popularised the FPS, Doom just refined the idea to near perfection, but lets face it. As for Half-Life, think about it, what about that game actually evolved anything in FPS games at the time? Sure it had a few interesting ideas and the plot was good, but game play wise, it brought nothing new to the table (until Half-Life 2 which was an awesome game), like I said, the game was a Spectacle to behold and a challenge to people grown complacent with blasting forward charging Strogg.

That's utter bullshit. How can you not like the gameplay of Half-Life 1, yet you like the gameplay of Half-Life 2 when they were basically the same? Sure, the gravity gun added some new gameplay elements, but at its core, the gameplay for Half-Life 1 and 2 were the same.

And excuse me, but I have constantly played Quake II for a long time now, and I'm still not tired of blasting Strogg.

I say Half-Life 2 was more innovative, because it was the first to incorporate truly awesome physics that actually affected game play in someway other then how people fall down stairs. But for testosterone fuelled killing rampages, you have to look to the Duke for the best. biggrin

As for the Halo universe... I agree, I mean they actually hired a professional comic writer to work on the project. smile

the single player may be part of the reason people buy it , but the multiplayer is why so many people still play it, even halo one is active on xbox live after years, people still enjoy it.

Depends on what kind of testosterone-fueled rampage I want. If I'm in a light-hearted mood, I turn to Metal Slug (I will always forever love that game). If I'm in a mood for a relentless challenge, I turn to Contra. If I want a lot of gore, I turn to Quake or Doom. Since I don't own Duke Nukem, I can't say I turn to it when I'm in the mood for gore, but I still think Duke Nukem is totally badass.

@ robmule 1235: Again, you know nothing of which you speak of. Halo: Combat Evolved had no online compatibility, because Xbox Live wasn't even up and running when it came out. And we're talking about important games, not just mainstream trash like Halo. Sure, Halo isn't all that bad, and I like it a little bit, but it's not nearly as good as it used to be. It lost all of its former glory once it turned into mainstream blatantly-overrated fanboy trash.

Ahhhh I always preffered soldier of fortune for gore, also if you want a different type of gore fest Dark Messiah of Might and Magic has an awesome combat system, its like F.E.A.R. meets Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

@ Robmule 1235: The reason the Halo series is so popular for online play is because its one of the few non PC fps games to incorporate it, nothing more nothing less. Like I said, its multiplayer is basically a clone of tribes, but with a more generic sci-fi universe.

I personally played through the entire first Half-Life and thought it wasn't very fun to be honest. (Although I will admit I cheated the whole time, so that probably affected my opinion.) My biggest problem with it was that the graphics were murder on my eyes.

(Not trying to start a flame war or anything, I'm just stating my opinion)

I bought messiah of might and magic when our internet was off, but our computer kinda sucked. Now we have one that handles fear on maximum seamlessly so im gonna have to install it sometime. To be honest, ive never played the first half life but i have played the second one on xbox. When did the first one come out? HL2 was alright.
