simlizzy I remember when I had my brother's help building the computer I am on now... and then his help transfering graphics from my old computer... and somehow in the move and confusion, I did not notice til later that I had lost all my art and graphics files from the first Web Tech University classes I had taken years ago... (so long ago that I ended up referring smilesnz when she was looking for a way to learn PSP quite a while back, but I digress) Losing those files was such a heart breaker, and probably one reason I keep procrastinating on reformatting this hard drive, as I want to be Quintuply sure I have everything important copied onto my *good* computer rolleyes My heartbreaker was after we moved to a house in Albuquerque from an apartment, we had also recently switched from Windows 98 (full of crashes) to Windows 2000 (much more stable), and with the lack of blue screens, freeze-ups, and crashes, I forgot to do backups because I didn't think anything would be lost. But then our whole harddrive crashed, and I lost all my saved files and my most recent backup was from 7 or 8 months prior. I lost all the works in progress and the originals of Mystaisha's beauty contest entry, for which she won a Silver Trophy. I lost Jade's word files of all her progress and cute stuff she did in her first few months of life. I lost over 20,000 saved neopets images. I worked hard over the next 4 months to resave and recatagorize all the neopets images, and probably did an even more thorough job because I found some archive sites that had stuff I'd never had before! But yeah, I made sure to keep regular backups after that. Right now though, stuff is being backed up to a second harddrive in my computer, and if the computer is stolen, or say, the house burns down, the backups are gone too, so yesterday Jason mentioned he could burn it all to DVD and we could take a copy over to my mom's.

oh i have a couple of good heart breakign stories...i use to be like fawn and saved graphics left and right....had one folder with fantasy art in it...that had about 400 differetn pics in it, had another folder with faeries and butterflies in it..about 200 pics...my favorite collections of art....then someone who was spose to be a friend decided she was gonna get her hubby to burn my hard drive for no reason whatsoever...lost it all....
second heartbreak was when my house got broken into the day before christmas 2 years ago, they stole my tv, vcr, and pc....i wasnt worried about my tv or vcr cause they were wore out literally..so no big loss there....but my pc had all of my pics of jake on them..lost everything...and those pics are irreplacable crying .....

Oh no!!!! crying That's what I worry about.. the fact that ALL our pictures of Jade are digital, and even if we back them up to CD, we have SO MANY burned CD's everywhere, I don't even know what's what, and CD's can't last forever.. And our camcord tapes have started to go bad, so Jason's trying to burn THOSE to DVD too, but the one we can't get to play is I think Jade's VERY FIRST newborn camcord! crying Oh, and I forgot about the heartbreak of my personal webpages getting deleted due to inactivity, and I had nothing backed up!

I guess I must be odd because when my computer lost everything, I really didn't have anything that I was worried about losing.

Ok, all these tales are making me scared... I have never done a backup by myself. My x used to do all of that, and then he never did it very much. I learned that if I wanted to keep something it couldn't be on my computer. But since he has been gone for many years, I have forgotten that rule. Now everything is on my pc. SO what do I do first??

I was going pretty good for a while, copied most files onto an extrenal Hard Drive. The hardest part for me was keeping it up often enough to do any good

I learned that if I wanted to keep something it couldn't be on my computer. But since he has been gone for many years, I have forgotten that rule. Now everything is on my pc. SO what do I do first?? Just find where you keep your important personal files, like word documents, or saved pictures, or even saved games from anything you install and play on your computer, like.. I dunno, Warcraft, or Unreal Tournament, if you play cd-rom games at all, and if you don't want to start over, which usually I don't care whether I start over... and maybe export your bookmarks somewhere if you don't want to lose those. And then depending on how much space all of this takes, copy the files to something like a floppy disk, or zip disk, or cd-r or dvd-r, or another harddrive if you have two in your computer, or to another computer if you're networked to another. There are programs that do backups for you at scheduled times. Mine is under Accessories -> System Tools, and I don't know if it came default on my computer or not, but it lets me pick and choose what I want to backup, and when, and to where.

I just looked and have the backup prompt in the same location, so hopefully if she has the same Windows OS, it will be there.
