Biggest question probably is what combat-tactics he is using? And what units he already has at the moment?
Asking for just space marines, you got about 100 different variations in hand, so little bit of more info would be nice. ^.^"

I'd advise getting some kind of transport for all tactical squads, and definitely for the command squad... terminators can deep strike and are effective in firing on the move, besides land raider is their only transport available, so they can be on foot for now. Some heavy support firepower should be added ASAP - predator or squad of devastators would fit nicely. If you like aggressive charging types, assault squad would be nice, though I'd stick with land speeder as fast firepower support. That would cover all the categories in the Force Organisation Chart - and give you a nice small force to play with. You can then decide what works best for you and add more of it. BTW, who is commanding your guys? (HQ)

Rhinos are always good: cheap, reliable and with that extra storm bolter quite a chugger.

Lt. Brookman Rhinos are always good: cheap, reliable and with that extra storm bolter quite a chugger. And with the Dedicated Transport rule gone, you pretty much have 3 rhinos for almost every unit in your army, not just 1 rhino/ 1 unit.
That and it´s always fun to mess your oppoments LoS with them. :3

and it can tank shock, then "escort" fleeing enemy to the board edge... I've seen even mighty terminators or biker nobz fall to this trick twisted

This means no special characters, and classic combat tactics in place... this isnt bad in itself, especially as it allows marines to disengage from hopeless fights, but I'd say this favors shooty builds. So I'd advise getting some big guns first and foremost.

Lt. Brookman Agreed, even as a wreck they can still fulfil a battlefield role to a certain degree. I remember one guy who parked his Rhinos around an objective and just boxed it in. Van Evok and it can tank shock, then "escort" fleeing enemy to the board edge... I've seen even mighty terminators or biker nobz fall to this trick twisted I managed to take down 3 carni´s with 3 rhinos to park in it´s walking path, delaying their assaults while my 2 half broken tac squads, bike squad and chaplain opened a can of woob-arse on them one by one. :p
I had some seeeerious luck back then, during the golden age 3th ed rulebook and a working DA-codex. <.< I miss those times.... <3Lt. Brookman I'd hold off on that one until maybe next year. wink I agree on that one. Even thou BT´s codex does have rules and tactics that can work very well with the modern rulebook, but since codexes are getting some serious updates, it be best to wait for a new one.
