Chocolate chips. He'd remember that.
He took a bite of his sandwich and looked around them at the nearest flowers. He didn't want to crush any, but it looked like they could probably carve a path through the grass. He nodded. Chewing, swallowing, tasting, they were all still fantastic things for him.
"Sure." He shifted, crossing his legs. "Did you know I've never kissed a man before?" He posed it like a great accomplishment.

Cody was surprised, and the shock showed briefly on his face. Dari'd given him his first kiss? He wore a closed expression for a moment, before smiling softly at Dari. "Really?" he asked. "That makes it even more special."

Dari just nodded and a broad smile stretched across his face. He was so happy to be here, and to share this day with someone who truly appreciated it.
The food was good, but the walk was better. There was room for holding hands and waists and laughing and smooching, and in time they went down the mountain for dinner and a stroll, a little window-shopping, and then it was back up the mountain to their spot, still empty, before the day was through. Dari laid the blanket out again and grabbed Cody from behind, both arms around his waist, and brought them both to the ground. He broke his fall with his arm in a trained and practiced way (he certainly didn't want to hurt his companion!) and laughed, wrapping around Cody and nibbling playfully at an ear.

Cody laid next to Dari; today had been perfect, just as perfect as his date was. He turned around and looked into Dari's eyes. He stroked his cheek, and, after a moments hesitation, said, "I know it's only our second date, but er. Would you like to be my boyfriend? ...Is it still called going steady?"
Well. That'd gone a lot smoother in his head.

"Hm?" Dari asked. He shifted with is head, moving to be on a better level with Cody. He laughed slightly. "Uh, I don't think it is, no," he teased, "but yes. I think I'd like that." He pulled Cody closer with the arm around him and gave him a quick kiss.
"I happen to really like you."

"I'm awful at this sort of thing," Cody admitted, awkwardly, but then Dari agreed! He beamed. He snuggled close to him, and said, "I really like you too, Dari."

Dari sighed and fit around Cody. They were nearly the same size, but it worked. Of course it worked. Dari closed his eyes hard and breathed in the moment. All of these things were so important to him, so new, so beautiful. He had to savor every moment, because he would never forget it. He couldn't.
He opened his eyes again and kissed Cody's curls. "I'm glad," was all he felt the need to say.

He had a boyfriend. The perfect boyfriend. Cody couldn't remember ever being so happy. He'd never met someone as fun, as smart, as sensitive as Dari was. "I'm glad I got to share this place with you," he said, smiling at him.

Dari cuddled closer as he smiled and laced his free fingers with Cody's. All he could give was another kiss. Yes, this was perfect. He didn't know the words to express it, however. The ones he could think of weren't appropriate, he thought. They could be easily misunderstood.

After a while, Cody had gone quiet. His breathing had slowed, and though his eyes were still open, it was clear he was struggling to keep them that way. He didn't release Dari's hand, giving him a sleepy sort of smile.

Dari couldn't help but think that this was the most adorable, loving gaze he had ever been given, and rather than trying to get Cody up and moving he began to trace shapes on the other man's back and hum softly. He let his own eyes close.
A little nap wouldn't hurt, right?

Cody was drifting, his eyes snapped open only momentarily, and then closed. Dari was so perfect, and they were together--and maybe he'd invite Dari to his place, next time. Maybe they could paint something together, he'd said he liked to paint...
His grip on Dari's hand loosened as he fell asleep.

Human urges were so strange. He was never hungry, yet he felt the urge to eat. He was never tired, yet he felt the urge to sleep. His eyelids were growing heavy as he listened to Cody's slow, even breathing and felt the beat of his heart, and it was all so warm and comfortable, he was gone himself without much time.
His phone rang then, or at least that was what it felt like. In reality the sun had set and Dari was deeply aware that he was surrounded in darkness and hearing the buzz of nocturnal creatures.
...ah, s**t.
Dari carefully removed himself from his boyfriend (hah! his boyfriend!) and answered in a hushed tone.
"I'm sorry."
"Where the hell are you?!" Toby, only yelling because he was worried, because they had both gone into that lab and seen what humanity had done to that poor mermaid.
"I fell asleep."
"You--! Fhhhhhgk." Dari recognized this as Toby simultaneously trying to not swear and also think of what to say.

Cody stirred at the lost of warmth, and then immediately noticed the source of noise. His scowl was audible. It was evident Cody wasn't a morning person. He looked from the phone to Dari.
"Whatimeisit?" he asked, yawning. "Why's your broth--oh. s**t." He'd noticed how dark it was.

Dari shrugged at Cody, eyes wide. He had no idea.
"Why didn't you check in?! You could be dead for all I know! What if--" Toby voice got quiet and existed solely between Dari's internal aural senses and the telephone. "What if your ring fell off when you washed your hands? I've been waiting all night for news to break. You fell asleep?!"
"Yes, I fell asleep."
"Where!" Still barely a whisper.
"Well, I don't think that's particulary relevant."
"Dari."
"I'm safe. I swear. I'll start heading home now, alright?" And the public park was probably closed at this time of night. Oh well. There wasn't much to do about it now.
"Alright. Alright. Jesus..."
"See you soon."
Click! Dari sat up and rubbed his eyes. They were so fallible in this form! Ah. His phone said it was just after ten and he'd missed a decent handful of texts from his partner.
"Mmh. I'm sorry."
