I'm boring in that regard as no bottle fun time for me. Part of my family is Italian and has that olive skin complexion, which my mom has. I will tan very little so I'm not like the white part of a Gaia forum white, but it doesn't take long for my to turn red as a cooked lobster. I just had a mole taken off a few weeks ago because it looked peculiar, which is another reason to treat the sun as if it is a firey ball of death.

I have a friend who is half Italian half Irish. Unfortunately he got the best of both worlds.

And the sun will kill you! The skin cancer rates have gone through the roof due to past years and generations lack of regard for personal health and safety.

I'm sorry if this sounds offensive, but I really do not mean it to sound that way...

I do live in one of the few states in the US that is very overtly concerned when it comes to the environment so the idea that "past generations" are responsible is just ludicrous to me. [What does that mean anyway? Which generations?]

Oh and I don't mind if people want to watch my deviantART account.

... So you live in Oregon? Just guessing. I'm probably wrong.

Yes! Bread machines are wonderful things. Why go through all the trouble of kneeding dough manually when the machine can do it for you, and do it right every time.

I like to do it by hand. Work all my frustration and anger into kneading the dough and then when I'm all tired and the bread is made I have a lovely little snack. ♥
Your bread probably tastes like angry. sweatdrop

Nope. It tastes nummy ♥

[i.e. Your attacking the bread and putting angry in it thus it tastes like angry.]

Aw, well, I tried. I just guessed because I live in Oregon, and we're like that all the time. We spend most of our money on environmental protection... Which is good and all, except our school system sucks as a result. Money goes one way, leaves another.

Amen. Move to the Pacific Northwest. You'll get an hour extra of sleep (Time zones FTW).

Sorry had to log off to go to bed.

I never meant it to sound accusational. Just the facts that my parents' generation grew up using baby oil to suntan. The nurses I work with remember when people would use anything to get a tan ( some used cooking sprays ). The skin cancer rates in the nation have jumped every year and continue to rise, mainly due to previous ideals about exposure ( ex: tan is beautiful; I don't think that, but that was the ideal ). Skin cancer has now outpaced the combined totals of breast, colon, prostate, and lung.

With the preference for tanning beds and inherited ideals and behaviors regarding the sun ( and the falsly proposed ideal that tanning beds were safer ) the skin cancer rates have jumped in this country by 50 percent within 20 years ( 1980 to 2000 ) and are still higher than they ever were prior to the 1970's, but at least 35 percent. Just the points of clothing changes, ideals of beauty, etc. . .

Granted some of this may be attributed to knowledge / research / diagnosis, but you cannot deny the encouragement for 'sun bathing', lack of physical clothing barrier ecouragement, and general behaviour patterns contributed to a lot of the issue.

The population has become a lot more aware and the trends are reducing. The popularity of tanning had dropped. There are public service messages about 'natural beauty' and 'go with your own glow'. Society as a whole has become aware of the issue and is trying to make changes.

I never meant to say that anyone was 'responsible', just that the cultural ideals had purported a great swing in whole facet of skin cancer and sun behavior. Trends are now growing to be a country wide effort of change.

I'm one state below you. =/

One of the things they did recently in my area was to pass a law in my area that it is illegal to use your fireplace or wood burning stove on specific days from November to February. [There's a phone number you are supposed to call and check before you do it.] A lot of new homes are being built without fireplaces [you don't see chimneys on them] as if in preparation for when they finally outlaw using these things completely.

Oh but you're exempted if you use your fireplace for religious purposes. >.>

I didn't say you're accusing, but I do think you're over generalizing and over simplifying too much when you commented that past generations were somehow responsible for a rise in skin cancer. Tanning salons still exist, which means that there are still people who want to tan despite all the warnings telling them not to. It cannot all be people from these past generations that you spoke up.

There are people, like myself, which could not tan even if we wanted to. There are also cultures that favor lighter skin complexions thus would favor not tanning. A lot of people don't tan for one reason or another even if they were part of one of those generations that you claim favors it.

Our atmosphere is so damaged that it no longer acts like a filter to protect us from some of the harmful radiation that the sun produces. It's so ineffective that I sometimes get sun burns on my arms just from being in my car and driving around to get where I need to be during the day. Sunscreen is known to contain ingredients that are carcinogenic.

It's not much different than when my mom got breast cancer from a cell phone, which is something the "current" generations will have to be concerned about in the future. Cell phones have been officially classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans," but that's about as far as any of the expects are willing to take it. I think the issue here is that not enough people got cancer that can be definitively linked back to their cell phone thus no expect is willing to say outright that cell phones do cause cancer.

I guess I was general in some of my statement because I didn't want to start quoting studies and listing references. I do feel that the mindset perpetuated in certain generations has had a big influence on how we interact with the sun, and what steps we take on a daily basis in relation to that. The 'current' generations are continuing the issue. Granted, some are attempting to make a difference.

I do agree that it is not just a mentality point that got us to this place, but behaviors throughout the world. Why is our atmosphere do depleted that we are not protected from our own sun? Why, with all the information out there, do tanning salons still exist and flourish? etc . . .

I was never attempting to cast blame. Just that there was a big shift in how the populace behaved. Cultural developments and advancements brought about complete societal changes.

And unfortunately there are so many influences in the world that bring about radiation exposure. In the healthcare field, insurance won't pay without definative testing. A doctor's word is not enough, there must be concrete tests or bills don't get paid ( and if the bills aren't paid, then the hospitals shut down . . . that alone is another issue ). So a doctor's word is not enough, so we do xrays, and CAT scans, and MRI's. All to prove that NOTHING is wrong. So we have continued exposure in your own healthcare. Your TV ( although miniscule ), your microwave ( still miniscule ), your computer . . . it all adds up and no one will give a specific 'THIS caused the cancer' because you can't. It is the sum of its parts.

So no, a specific generation did not cause skin cancer. But many generations played a part, and I believe the people and their attitudes / behaviors played a bigger part .There is no blame to be passed around, just discussion.

I guess I am willing to be done with this conversation if you are. We each think about the subject in a completely different fashion. Our beliefs and opinions are based on different experiences and knowledge bases. I don't really think either answer is right or wrong, just one part of the group issue.
