So I got my face handed to me by Guard today. Two minimum Infantry Platoons (Annihilation meant he merged the squads), two Valks with a S-Weapon Squad and some Vets, Creed and Co. in a Chimera and a Demolisher. Half of the reason was my poor deployment - I basically put my Terminators right in the line of his Russ and lost 4/5 in the first shooting phase. The main advantage was the Orders - First Rank, Second Rank meant I lost three Assault Marines instead of two, and I was blunted by Cover (though he had forest as 4+ when it's usually 5+ and he failed to use the "Keep Fighting" or whatever Order. Twice in the same turn he rolled 12, then rerolled 11.
So yeah.

It's interesting to see this all work together and I can see that vox casters are essential to dispell that dreadful double six result that would otherwise cancel all further ordering about.

I've changed my mind on my previous statement, I think I might just build a small army of veterans in Valkyries instead of a regular infantry company.

I can see where you got the idea from: the third battle report in the White Dwarf showed the Vostroyans as carapace wearing veterans, which does the models a lot of credit. Using Veterans in such a way will make it easier to quickly field a small army. Only downsides are of course that the models are still T3 and mere Guardsmen.

I will crush my weakness with the weight of my pride! Veterans and Stormtroopers with Chimeras and Valkyries.

I'm going to build a small 500 points all veterans force, led by a psyker and commissar to keep things simple. I'll throw in a Valkyrie:
Lord Commissar: power weapon Primaris psyker Veterans squad: sergeant with power fist, 2x grenade launcher, missile launcher and vox caster. Veterans squad: sergeant with power weapon, 2x grenade launcher, missile launcher and vox caster. Valkyrie: lascannon and heavy bolters

A little risky there, seeing as your list is very low on troops and fire power. I'm sure though that you will manage somehow, you've got a knack for kicking my a** at the very least. sweatdrop

Veterans are pretty sweet, they allow you to take something other than a big infantry platoon as a troops choice. Maybe later (a LOT later) I'll build a Penal Legion squad, from what I've heard and seen it is a nice conversion entry more than anything else. xp

Speaking of penal legion squads! mrgreen Banner and vox are PURELY cosmetic and as something of a theme running through my army. The Custodian is PIP and will wear the same uniform as the rest of the army. The Penal Legionaires will wear ragtag uniforms from hitherto regiments. The last model is the dope fiend, a squad member converted to represent the "Psychopaths" specialist skill as a handy marker of sorts. I'll also convert two models to properly represent "Gunslingers" and "Knife Fighters" respectively. The rest of the squad is made up of spare Ghost models, some Catachans and Last Chancers. I might go for a second squad with more Catachans in them.

Tell me if this sounds right, My friend says he can beat a 2000 point army of Imperials with only 1000 points of marines. Needless to say, he won. How can this happen? My army 100 or so guardsmen, 5 chimeras, 4 commissars, 3 antitank support squads, 2 leman russes
My friends army. 31 marines, lascannons, flamers, and 1 predator with all lascannons,
really, are marines oped, or do i just suck?

I'd love to see the complete lists before making a full verdict but as of right now yes, you suck.

Other question before we get too far into it: How long have you guys been playing in relation to one another?
