Rune continued on into the night once more, as the sun started to set his pace slowed. He felt the burning urgency to continue, perhaps this time stronger than the aches in his limbs. His long tongue lulled from the side of his mouth, his head hanging between his shoulders and his chest heaving. The cruel stone floor of the valley had taken its toll on his body, something he was regretting in the present but told himself that he'd praise in the future as his body healed and grew stronger from the experience. Yes, he had to remain in the positive. Otherwise this whole thing could be seen as a foolish trip of a hopeful youth. The eagle was gone, and all the walls were becoming repetitive. His memory didn't serve him any further. For what could have been hours he had walked in what very well might have been circles. As a pup, he?d only been to the site once and that was by being carried by his father? half of the trip he'd fallen asleep during.

"Serves me right...", he panted, turning his eyes up to get a peek at the sky, "Serves me right indeed..."

"What does?" A voice chimed in from above.

Rune looked up sharply, pulling his tongue in as his fangs bared upwards. For a moment, the source could have been from anywhere, his eyes darting to the shelves of rock above him. Finally a sliver of white moved down towards him. A small wolf? even a bit smaller than him with a milky white pelt striped here and there, a few markings on him but not at all like those on himself? a stripe of a stormy silver color that could easily have been the moonlight on the beast?s back.

"...who are you..." He growled, backing up slowly.

"I'm me." The wolf smiled, throwing his head up to offer the stranger a rather pupish grin. For the moment, Rune kept up his defenses. Even the most innocent looking creatures had their barbs. This wolf, however... didn't just seem innocent, he seemed completely oblivious. His tone was so up beat, the grin was so dammed pupish that Rune wondered if the wolf even considered the dangers of sneaking up on another wolf in the dead of night.

"A name." Rune said simply, nearly growling.

"Ooh... uh...", the white wolf tilted his head to the side a bit, "Byakko. My brothers call me all sorts of things too." The wolf looked back, taking a closer look over the stranger. For a moment Rune was nearly beside himself with the look of awe in the little one's eyes, then completely taken off guard as the wolf rushed him, his head down looking at the wings on his chest. "OH by the winds! You have wings!"

"I beg your..."

"I bet you can fly real, real high! I can't... I don't have wings and my clouds are stuck." The white wolf, apparently named Byakko, turned his head down in disappointment, whimpering just slightly.

Rune stood stunned, his mouth having fallen open and his brows raised. Was this wolf ...serious? Flight? Surely not... only a fool would think a wolf capable of such a thing. Clouds? What was he? "You mean? the markings on your feet."

"They're clouds." Byakko said firmly, snorting slightly.

"They're markings... just like my 'wings'. I cannot actually fly with them. They're just... there."

"That's dumb, you can to. That's what Genbu said. If you have wings you can fly. I can fly too if I go real fast, but only for a little bit- my clouds get stuck again." He grinned, tossing his head up again.

"You cannot be serious."

"No, I'm Byakko- Serious is a dumb name."

Rune's mouth twitched, temped to grin but he fought it back. First the witless deer in the woods? now a witless wolf who believed that patterns upon one?s fur granted special abilities. What fools the world had.

"Indeed...", he said after a long pause, slowly composing himself, ?By? any chance do you know how to get out?"

"Out of where?"

"Of this valley? I'm looking to get to the east."

"East! I know how." He smiled, nodding sharply, "You gotta fly out. If you stay on the ground you'll keep going around n? around. I got lost- I chased a flutterbye away from Genbu an-"

"You cannot fly." Rune repeated, "And neither can I..."

"Yes I can!" Byakko insisted, turning his back to Rune, "I'll show you. You gotta fly to follow me, kay? Or you'll just be stuck."

"What do you-" The wolf hardly had time to respond, off went the smaller white wolf like a flash. Impossibly quick. Spirits and ancestors- any faster and there was no doubt he could fly. "WAIT WAIT!"

Rune shot off after the white wolf, ignoring the burning aches in his body, ignoring the dryness in his mouth and throat again. Lords it was fast... perhaps fly to him was running at such a speed. However, Rune was once again shocked by another definition of the young wolf's version of flight. In a blur of white and silver the wolf launched himself at the wall of the canyon, catching the rock under his foot just long enough to spring himself out, catch another, and jump at a higher shelf, landing with ease above.

'Fly to get out' , he was getting it a bit more now. Perhaps the pup wasn't as dull as he had originally suspected. Rune threw himself forward, picking up the pace as he made for the same rock wall, launching himself at it. The first series of jumps wasn't as bad, catching the rock he leapt out for another, then another, then finally he launched himself at the shelf that the white wolf had landed on, barely catching it with his forepaws. Whimpering his hind legs scrambled to keep him from falling. He could feel his claws scraping back as his body's weight began pulling him back downwards.

Byakko turned just in time to see him jump. The grin never faded- even at the risk of the winged wolf being sent to his death. He simply trotted over and looked down,
"Gotta fly faster to get higher."

"HELP ME YOU FOOL!" Rune growled, heaving himself just enough to gain a bit more ground under his paws, but not enough to win the balancing act between the bulk of his body and his foreclaws.

"You gotta say please." Byakko's nose wrinkled up a bit and his head shook slightly.

"Of all the...", Rune growled, but caught the seriousness in the fool's eyes. With a growl he surrendered a bit of his dignity, "...please."

"See? That wasn't so hard." Byakko leaned down, snatching the scruff of the runed wolf and gave one hard yank upwards, with the combined efforts Rune was back on the ground- a good few levels above the base, panting and whimpering from the strain.

Byakko only grinned, looking upwards,
?A bit more ups and you can see on forever, then you gotta go for a while then land down on the ground to go out.?

"Wh...what?"

"You must not have flown much." The white wolf grinned, plunking down onto his haunches, "That's okay, I'll teach you. Genbu says if you're not used to going that fast you get tired."

"...you don't say." Rune grumbled.
