solo/ensemble contest is just about the best thing ever. when you get superior ratings of course. i have on all my previous solos, and i'm pretty sure i will this year, as well. i'm not big on ensembles. i don't like having to trust others with practicing and getting it right, but if my BD puts me in one, i'll do it.

So far, I've done one quartet, one trio, and two trumpet duets. I've found that I like the duets better than the quartet or trio, less people, also better instrumentation. 3nodding But I'm too shy to do a solo sweatdrop

I know what you mean, but our participation is MANDATORY... I don't have a problem with THAT. In fact, I like that! HOWEVER... I'm in a woodwind sextet, (that word makes me roflcopter).
And half of us are like:
"GRRR! LET'S WIN THIS! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT YAH! WE'LL GET 1+ SCORE AND BE BRILLIANT AND IF WE WORK HARD AT IT WITH DETERMINATION!!!"
(I'm in that one XD)... While the other half is like... muttering:
"Do we HAVE to do this ? I hate every single frikkin song we play omg our BD is an a*****e I hate band I hate music this piece is stupid why do we have to be in this contest why can't we quit omg i don't want to practice this piece EVER."
(No... I'm serious, they DO talk like that! AND in that style without use of proper punctuation.)

I have done a solo for a festival. It was great...I can't remember the song names of all the solos I have done over the years. The last solo fest I played for a played a V or VI...It was for clarinet. I did fine. But as an ensemble I suck. haha

Solo and Ensemble owns my soul. I got a superior on my level two solo last year! (Air for Cornet) I'm gonna do an (level two... nailed it SRing) ensemble and maybe a level three solo this year! My BD picked groups, too. razz

Just do it. I had a orch solo/ensamble once. I hated 2 of the people, but they had good tips. Together, the 6 of us, got and 3+ amazing rating, and the jurdges siad we were the best middle school they had heard in a few years.

This is my second year going to solo ensemble...last year I did a choir solo and a Woodwind Quintet...I'm once again doing a choir solo and the same Woodwind Quintet this year...We're playing Menuetto by Hayden I think....We also go to Fine Arts Fest at my H.S. if we have our piece ready in time.....I was going to do a bassoon solo....but my BD wouldn't let me, since I'm getting lessons starting after break, and she had to have entries in last week.... crying crying ...oh well...

I dunno how the scoring where you live goes, but last year I gathered up a couple of good, serious brass players and we played Rage Over A Lost Penny and got a 1, which is the best. In most S&E contests, there must be brass with brass, ww with ww, ect., so my only advice is that if you really want to do it, grin and bear whoever you BD puts you with.

I've always done a solo. I did do an ensemble one year, but it was boring. I wish I could do more ensembles now that I'm in high school, but I'm not allowed... >.>

were allowed to do solo and ensemble, but we can do whatever we want to for it, because ususally only a few people want to go... i always do a solo, sometimes a duet with a friend.... my advice for your situtaion is just play your best, if you get into any dissagreements just drop it... its usually not worth it, and try to be friendly with everyone: you can go back to hating them as soon as solo and ensemble is over

My BD for NEXT year has already stuck me in a spot for the Solo Ensemble festival in seventh grade, lol. She remembers my name from the first and only one of two times she met me from 700+ she had to met in that week, because I am a bassoon player and she loves the bassoon. biggrin

I usually do a solo, but I have done ensambles with the rest of the percussion section, so I do have a tip. Just enjoy the music, don't worry about the other people. If you show up, shut up, and focus on practice and performance, then you'll be fine. If people try to talk to you, only answer with short responses. It works in any situation where you have to work with people you don't like.
