Isobel Bellamy Goth bands: this is a big part for the first and second wave of the goth movement (1977-early 90s) but, we're now in the third wave and the meaning of goth have changed a little, you can now be considered goth without listening to goth music (for the love of all that is dark and un-holy it is not Manson or Emo and emo-esque bands). There are going to be arguements that you can't be goth without listening to the music but, if you saw me walking down the street you would call me goth despite that in the strictest, first-wave goth sense I'm just not goth. I like the music but it's not my favourite kind. Speaking of first/second/third gen matters, I'm curious, what are more or less the defining traits of the third genoration goths? If I'm not mistaken, the first generation were dark intellectuals with deep rooting in romanticism in the arts (though I could be off with this...), the second generation was more about music, attire, and things of a morbid nature, and now with the defining factors of the third generation, I don't quite know what the defining factors would be... I feel rather awkward asking this, but I was just rather curious... sweatdrop

I never became goth, I was born this way. Instead of just typing everything up, I'll just post a link. Goth Explained! That is, to date, the best article I have ever seen.

kagome05ontherun what makes me goth? hmm.. what makes me goth is: That i love the literature and attempt to write my own. I can't live without the music I live to dance with the darkness and all the hell she brings I live to Prance around and do my weirdo things i go to the darkness willingly begging her to be my friend I will love the nothingness of her till my fateful end (wow i wrote a poem and i didn't realize it....weird) Stereotypical reasons: I wear black I used to cut and still occasionally(sp?) do I was suicidal and sometimes i still am I used to cut, although I'm trying to stop. I can't do a good job; I HAVE A PAIR OF SCISSORS under my pillow.

The one thing is probably the individuality, and my immense hatred of being the average girly-girl that my mom was trying to force feed me through a tube. Yeah, that's probably it. I guess I just wanted to be different... *shrug* And I do seem to fit into alot of sterotypes, but I'm not going to go into that, because I find it pointless.

I mean, my girlfriend doesn't even know that I'm goth. I'm too afraid of her response...

I mean, my girlfriend doesn't even know that I'm goth. I'm too afraid of her response... The safest way to "reveal" that you're goth is to wait until goth is brought up into a conversation. Somehow, find a way to explain goth in a very broad and general way (i.e. "well, contrary to popular belief, goth has nothing to do with suicide or satan worship or depression. it's a culture of people who enjoy certain styles of fashion and music, which stemmed from punk, but had a far more refined, intellectual edge"). After explaining it, continue on "In fact, some might consider me a goth, depending on the accuracy of their definition. Under my defintion, I would be a goth".

I would say 'Because my Daddy died last March.' But that isn't a reason.
Mainly because of the 'goth-wear' I'm a bit heavy on the black. And black and white. And black and red. And black and green.
o.o;;

I'm goth because I say so. ^_^
Let's see..... Love of:
1.Darkness 2.Occult 3.Taboo stuff, period.
Wear lots of black(it seems to be a stereotype, but it's a very accurate one..)
I wanted to be amongst people who are more open-minded than not, really. And I liked the music as soon as I'd heard about the bands. I don't even try to be goth, I just end up being thrown into the goth/metalhead categories more often than not, and that's mainly off the way I dress and my musical tastes.
Then everyone sees my large bookshelf full of occult-related topics, and the things I'm generally interested in. Then I'm *definitely* a goth or a metalhead. mrgreen
