Banyil's eyes widened and he rolled to the side, avoiding permanent face rearrangement. Getting to one knee, he threw a punch at the nearest part of Carltis to offer itself. This happened to be his groin. "b*****d!"

[Carltis: Defending like WOAH against Banyil]
Carltis was not usually one to go on the defensive but he really didn't want to get hit in the danglies, and moved faster than he had thought himself able to given what he'd already been through today. The blow still hurt like hell, but at least it was on his already battered leg than square in his crotch.

He was going to tell! Now Aleck was squarely in 'enemy' territory, if only for that perceived threat - the thought of the weyrhealer held far more terror for the young apprentice than any bloody revolution. Sad but true. At the same time Aleck stomped, Trattan moved, doing his best to bullrush him. It didn't occur to him that adding physical assault to the list of things he'd done wasn't going to win him any points.

"Seriously. Enough." It was half a statement and half a plea; but completely accompanied by Aleck stepping aside and sticking out a foot to trip him.

By this point Banyil had gotten to his feet - his own nethers still smarted like hell, but not enough to be incapacitating - and aimed a hook punch at the side of Carltis' head.

Carltis ducked - thank shells, his head was ringing and spinning enough as it was - and taking a swift step backwards along with his duck he aimed a kick at the wherhandler's midrift.

The chubby apprentice faceplanted heavily on the rock floor and stayed there for a moment. Then he got up, sniffling, and with a terrified look at .. well, everything, made a stumbling attempt for the door.

Aleck was going to regret this. He was, for sure, but he would regret it more if that hulking wherhandler knocked out Carltis and came for him next. So leaving the apprentice to escape (because really, what he'd done was already bad enough) the blond considered the fighting pair for a moment, approached, and aimed a good kick to the back of Banyil's left knee.

The exact nature of Banyil's curse as he spotted someone in his peripheral vision is unprintable, but it had something to do with wherries, miscegenation, and Aleck. Stumbling sideways from Carltis' kick (and causing Aleck's to miss,) he turned and rounded on the easier target. No one had ever asked him if he would hit a man with glasses, but in this case the answer was 'yes.'

Somewhere in this thick of things Aleck had started to shift from 'convenient person' to 'ally'. Maybe it had been when he'd pulled the woman trying to kick his head in off him, or when they'd woken up and staggered to their feet together and he'd passed the blue-eyed young man his glasses. Whenever it had been however, it had happened, and he was not pleased about the wherhandler attacking him.
"Get off him!"
Grabbing Banyil by the shoulder he tried to yank him around and hit him in the face.

"Right!" It was a roar; he'd felt his punch connect, so he assumed the slighter weyrbrat would think twice about another blow. Didn't look like much of a fighter anyway. "You need to shut up!" Banyil snarled, moving his head just shy of Carltis' fist as he let the spin's momentum drive his fist forward.

If he goes down, so do you. That was the mean little voice of self-preservation speaking up. It was a far cry from altruistic, but it was true, and it was what drove Aleck to drive his elbow at the back of Banyil's head as Carltis fell back.
Later it would occur to him he could easily have run.
