What the Sexy Shadow said. People who are too normal get old. People who just aren't interested in conforming are the ones who stay interesting for life.

For example, when dropping my kids off at school the other day, there were three girls walking along. They could have been clones ... blonde hair in ponytails, practically the same jeans, similar bookbags and sparkly purses. I realize there's tremendous pressure to be like everyone else in middle school, but how boring is that. At that age, I was definitely not interested in conforming. Roll the time machine forward 40 years ... what do you think these little Barbie clones will be like then?

Aye. Without a doubt.

Gads, Fresnel if you weren't a woman, I'd marry you. I guess I'll just hug you instead. I have thought the same thing, many times. I wish other people would think sometimes, and teach their kids to, as well. Carbon copy humans drive me bonkies. I understand fitting in is societally is supposedly a good thing, but meh...

As for the visual freak-side...I kinda like someone who wears theirs on their sleeve. And I don't mean the layer a trend-types either. However, I always try to remember that the inner weirdo might not match the one on the outside. *laughs* I guess "catch the real weirdo" can be an interesting game to play.

Looking just like Barbie, or like everyone next you, for that matter, won't hide what is inside...and it won't stop time, laugh lines and crow's feet, and body weight, either.

Forsooth, Jiggy. Why wait to get old to be eccentric? By then, it's probably too late anyway!

Urgh, Barbie clones. We have lots of them here. I'm one of about three girls in my class who hasn't ever had her hair dyed. It's still its natural colour - brown, almost black - and its original style - wavy, almost curly.

As far as clothes go, I get a tad annoyed when people approach me and say "are you, like, a Goth or something?" just because I wear a lot of black. As it happens, the black stuff needs less ironing and is usually on top of my pile of clothes. rolleyes So now I wear more white - at least people don't ask questions about it.

And Fresnel is right - why wait to be eccentric? You can start now and enjoy it for longer.

The Sexinesses that are Jiggy and Fresnel are right, TMO.

Janier, what sort of place do you live, where people say "gothlick"?!

To me, the term "goth" implies a certain world-view aside from just wearing black and the de rigeur accessories. Wearing black alone doesn't qualify you as that any more than me wearing brown makes me a UPS driver.

No offense, but what exactly does Greebo mean? I've never heard of that before (and I live in America). Please explain, since I'm lazy and don't want to look it up...

From Wikipedia:

Nowadays, the term is used as a derogatory term against rock music enthusiasts, who choose to dress to suit themselves and their peers, this is an abbreviation of Grease Boy.

The term originates from Discworld, where the author Terry Pratchett gives this as the origin of the cat's name. His own definition of a greebo is "Someone who wants to be a Hell's Angel, but doesn't have the style."

Thank you, Fresnel!
I feel really lazy now though, because I didn't think anybody would actually look it up... sweatdrop

Eh, I get called 'nerd' a lot - but that's a title I'm actually proud of.

"Greebo", huh? Nice of them. You could just do what I do - turn it into something that you can be proud of. Like - "yes, I know I happen to like Franz - just because I have better taste in music than you, doesn't mean you have to be jealous..."

When people call me nerd, I say - "you're teasing me about the fact that I get better grades than you? At least I have my priorities right..." I've made lots of enemies amongst the 'popular' girls at my school, but at least they leave me alone now...

That's OK, Blossom, I was home sick and bored with nothing else to do anyway.

I don't know what name I was called in high school, but I did meet a classmate many years later whom I didn't know well at the time. He said, "You were smart and pretty and I thought you were a stuck-up b***h." But in fact, I was really shy and quiet and didn't think I was pretty at all. People make all kinds of assumptions about other people in school. Just know who YOU are. Eventually, everybody else will figure it out too.

*Bows to the Smexehness that is Fresnel, who speaks with the wisdom of late-youth mixed with the smartness of being Fresnel*

...Cause, yeah, that made sense.
