CH1YO Raticiel I think it is possible to be catholic and don't believe in God. I know many people serving the church, but faith? At least it doesn't seem like they're believing anything... Those are just shelves people are putting each other in. I don't fit a shelf, I don't really think anyone fits... But without those shelves people wouldn't be able to start wars, so how boring it would be... xp Doesn't catholic mean "believer in Christ" or something to that effect? Besides big shelves are easy to fit into. Not really. There are many people just trying to look like they're true believers. Perhaps it's just specific to my country wink I don't think a human being fits any shelf, at least if we have souls and if we consider the fact that life isn't static. It's changing, people change over time, and putting it all to a shelf is like trying to put sunshine in a bottle.

It might be an often misattributed title but I do think that that is the proper definition. Human is a big shelf you've just put us all in, there are plenty more besides that are generally accepted, such as "woman" or "lunatic".

The Catholic church is the universal church because it was the one established by Christ, 'Christian' was a descriptive terme handed to us by the 'pagans' of the time which I'm sure you already knew. Someone needs to get you a dictionary cool It's interesting, the examples you used for those other shelves...

Perhaps you mean the single act of using word "human"? Okay, we can argue about that but I wouldn't like it to end as debate about ontological status of "word"... I really hate arguing over words... And about what words are. And this whole shelf thing reminds me of kindergarten, we had to do little paper shelves and mark them A, B, C, D... and so on, and then we were putting pictures or something like that... ah, whatever.

Shameful Wikipedia use the term "Catholic Church" to refer to all believers in Jesus Christ across the world and the ages, regardless of "denominational" affiliation Ignatius seems to be of this persuasion also- denying heretics the status of Catholic.

Shelving something can surely only mean the act of categorisation? Is it not the usual practice to begin with the largest categories available and to refine the decision into ever smaller shelves? I'm not a fan of semantic argument myself- save occasionally whilst trolling- so hopefully we should avoid that minefield.

Catholic and Christian are no longer interchangeable but yeah I guess your definition could be considered an adopted meaning when such discourse is set in a historical context. It doesn't add to communicable clarity today though so I'd stick with it's more direct definition.

I'm happy to abide by a differentiated form of the word but to clarify should we mean by Catholic Roman Catholic or any of the Catholic churches?
