"I did indeed! I know all of the children's abilities. And I've read up on a few of the dragons, albeit not all of them. The files are incredibly complex."

Shrinking a little, Laial pouted into his sandwich. "You probably know more about Heiko than I do..."

Kay scratched his head.
"Actually? I don't think I do. I should work on that."

"Well, she's a leviathan... so I guess she's a lot like all others, but Heiko is special 'cause she belongs with me." Laial babbled on comfortably, curling his toes in his sandals.

"Exactly. She's very special." They all were, in Kay's mind. Each picked as an egg for a child, growing a personality of their own...it made him tremble with excitement. No, not that kind...more like a happy nerd joy.

"I should probably get home soon... I sneaked out without her so she'll be sad." Laial sighed, frowning deeply, and shifted his sandwich from his hand to a tentacle to take hold of his chocolate, for a sip.

Prehensile tentacles? How cool...
"Alright. I'll see you some day, I'm certain. If you would like a class, just call this number." He held out a business card from his old job. he found them quite useful.

Taking the card, Laial pouted at it. "H-hey... wanna walk with me maybe? I mean I know you're a teacher and grown up, but..." He paused, scrunching his face. "You don't have to. I was just being a little kid."

"No! Of course I will."
Kay packed his basket up (save the sandwich he very much wanted to finish) and stood, rolling up his blanket and tucking it under an arm.
"Do you live nearby? I mean, of course you do, if you've walked, but how close?"

"I was heading back home... so it's not far." Laial pointed to a stand of trees across the park. "I cut through there and then it's just a couple of minutes... I went and bought candy." He ate the last of his sandwich with a little noise. "Evan's gonna be mad that I ate before dinner." He smiled, a little wickedly.

"Well, he doesn't have to know," Kay shrugged, walking beside the boy, "I'm sure you can stomach supper too. You're a growing boy!" As studious and old-fashioned as Kay appeared, he believed very much in freedom and will, giving them up for nothing except, perhaps, gaining knowledge.

"Of course not! You're not hurting yourself or anyone else, so why should I?" Kay asked, "and should he find out in other ways, I will gladly take the blame. Adults do not often scold other adults." Hm. They were going into a less satisfactory part of town. Pretty, but old. Old and full of skeletons.

The area that Laial and Evan lived in was, as said, old -- it was beautiful in its own way, a beauty that had ripened past its full bloom and was heading slowly and subtly toward decay. The gardens were overgrown; the sidewalks were cracked; the houses, though they were large and most of them wore fresh paint like women covering scars, sagged a bit. The house Laial beelined toward was one of those -- two stories, and painted a brilliant white with bright blue shutters. The front yard was slightly too tall, but green; the garden there bloomed with a profusion of overblown pink azaleas.
"This is home," Laial announced proudly as he hastened toward the brick walkway, his flipflops slapping his heels.

Kay wasn't sure how far to follow, and so stood at the end of the walkway that lead to the front steps. It would not be polite to invite himself in, after all. Either way, he enjoyed looking over the house. It had a strange charm. It had seen things that the people in the neighborhood had yet been born to see. He loved the ancient...
