---|Not an undergraduate medicine degree, though.

What was your undergraduate degree?

Well, it was a declared pre-med track. In the US, pretty much all medical careers are pushing towards doctorates (even PT/OT programs are starting to become doctoral programs). Thus, there isn't a medicine degree.

The degree itself was a Bachelor's of Science in Biomathematics and Philosophy.

---|So the degree that qualifies you to practice as a doctor is a PhD in...medicine? If I have that right, that is both cool and odd.

My degree is called Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery. It's a six-year undergraduate degree. If I wanted, I could have done a Bachelor's in Science or Biomedical Science and then done a graduate MBBS, which is a four year degree, but given that Biomed is three years, it would have taken me seven years all together.

The degree is either MD (medical doctor) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). I am working towards the latter.
Generally, there is two years of academic education followed by two years of clinical education (a.k.a. "hands on" in a hospital). It's not quite the same as a PHD because medicine isn't really its own subject in the US.

---|Oh! So you don't have medical degrees in the same way that we do. What's osteopathic medicine, by the way?

We have three years of pre-clinical and three years of clinical in this particular degree, but the latter three just mean that you have more placements than in pre-clinical. And then there's internship, but that's not actually part of the degree.

---|Thanks! I must say, I think our system is far less complicated, but after reading that article, I understand (kind of) how yours works.

Also, I read the article about osteopathic medicine. It's like normal medicine but focusing more on the musculo-skeletal system, yes? I'm doing musculo-skeletal as one of my subjects at the moment, and it's kind of cool (better than gastrointestinal and reproductive, at least). I actually thought I'd hate it before I started, but it's become one of my favourite subjects. (Given that my other three subjects this semester are gastro, genetics and Health in Practice, though, I suppose that's not saying much.)

    whut?

Yeah, basically. In general, DOs are licensed for everything MDs do, plus also the neuromusculoskeletal system. In other words, after we're done the physical, we can crack your back. It's like a lollipop for adults.

I choose not to care whether or not either Burger approves of any of my threads. I could hardly care less if he thinks it is good, bad, pointless, silly or otherwise. 3nodding

---|^.^ Now I kind of wish our uni offered osteopathic medicine as a degree.

Jacky: Mooby and I are comparing med school systems. I don't think it really makes sense to anyone else.

it kinda makes sense to me. I know a tiny bit about med school cause 3 friends are in med school and as an OT, I have to know a bit about interacting with doctors.

Osteopathic medicine is a U.S. invention, and it's still struggling to expand outside the country's borders. A few DOs run around Canada, but for the most part they stay in the U.S.
Not to mention that in Europe, osteopaths are generally not doctors. It makes expansion somewhat slow.
