Shounen? My gods, you are a beautiful, wondrous person. n.n Anywhom, now that the ego-stroking is done with, you're not a budding literate, you like...Full-blossomed literate. *Is comparing people to flowers again* Let's just hope you don't wilt...I mena die! Die, that's it!

Lol. Thank you... xd I don't plan on leaving Gaia anytime soon, unless...

I get overrun by illiterate n00bs. God, help me. >>; -hides- Their grammar is absolutely horrific, not to mention the constant misspellings.

COME ON, PEOPLE! Let's USE THE RIGHT VERSION OF 'THEIR/THERE/THEY'RE' and 'YOUR/YOU'RE'! -twitches- -muscle spasm-

I mean...I hate it when they go, "Oh! Your a literate RPer! So am I!" ><; My reaction: -twitch- -twitch- You do the good literate title shame, you hypocrite!

Or when they claim it to be a literate RP and there are misspellings in the first post describing the thread. Now that makes me laugh and wonder...

"Oh, my, a literate RP thread? What, have you forgotten to use spellcheck again?" I don't have anything against spellcheck-I use it myself to check spellings of words like psychokinesis-but honestly...learn to spell words like 'appearance' (not apperence...-twitchtwitch-) before claiming to be a literate RPer. I think that's fair enough, but maybe it's just me.

After all, I am a**l about spelling and grammar (not grammer) and whatnot. XD

*Grins* One of my favourites is this one: 'Litterates only!'

I can forgive a few spelling mistakes on the tough words, or just simple typos, because I do them too... And there are some words I can never tell if I'm spelling them right.

Usually, I just let them go... It's when creepy-'My character is god so respect him!'-n00bs appear. As in, they have good grammar, and they have good spelling...but their chars never, EVER screw up, or get embarassed. It annoys me to no end. I mean, nobody's perfect...

However, I don't think it is fair to say that. I mean, many talented writers have writing disorders. Avi, for instance, is a brilliant writer. But he also happens to have a writing disorder. Dyslexic, or something. I could go further into his life story, but the point is that you don't need to be on the ball with spelling and grammar to be a great writer. Avi happen's to be my favorite author, and he has been successful with 50+ books. Plus a Newbury award Crispen, Cross Of Lead.

Sometimes I think I'm dyslexic, most of the time actually, but that doesn't effect one's ability to be a great writer. That what I think, anyway.

*feels strongly about books and writers*

On a side note, I tend to write all my posts on WordPerfect first, and then cut and paste. I think more people should do that. Especially Noobies. It just looks more professional.

now, on a lighter note... I got cat ears! *happy happy happy*

I dont really mind if the person has bad grammar or spelling unless it's so bad that nobody can read it. If they can tell a good story without perfect spelling then more power to them!
The only thing that gets on my nerves is when people say they want a "semi-literate rp", what does that mean??
PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 12:00 pm

Semi-literate? I think... --Don't quote me on this, I'm probably wrong-- ..that it means slightly shorter posts than fully literate, and with less description?

*shrugs* maybe. But I always go in thinking at least they're semi-literate but no. The page looks like it was attacked by an army of little *****'s crying
PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 12:25 pm

... *Thinks* ....Maybe semi-literate means they use the signs? Like, *, ~, etc?

I...Would rather not think abotu it right now. It depresses me to know that ninety nine percent of the Gaian population either chatterboxes it up, or posts in Literate RPs, when they're completely...Not.

*patpat* well, maybe they think that's the only way to rp. I rped like that before I came to gaia ( redface ) and saw an actual literate rp. Everyone's so busy telling newbs they're bad rpers but nobody bothers to tell them how to rp literate..ly. Is that even a word?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 1:52 pm

Literately? Yesh...I do think that that is a word...but I'm only about...89.56% sure...something like that. Sounds reasonable though, no?

You have a good point there. I understand that some of us have learning disabilities, and people like you -worships- actually make an attempt to check their spelling.

However, this comment is mainly directed towards the creators of "literate threads" (especially the applications). I get irritated at times because it just shows a lack of effort when they spell words such as 'appearance' incorrectly. Use Microsoft Word or something to check your spelling...

Also, if you're dyslexic, don't you mix words up or something similar to that? My history teacher last semester was, and he always transposed two words or skipped a letter whenever he was writing notes for us, his students to take. Thus...

Wouldn't 'appearance' be spelt 'apearance' or with one of the letters mixed up? I don't mean to offend, I'm just curious. =)

Semi-literacy I think, like Nylamie said, is the use of asterisks, squiggly lines, and dashes to indicate action. However, semi-literates have longer posts than illiterates, and there IS an attempt at some spelling/grammar. =)

I think. -blinks-

Wow...It's beautiful how we all claim literacy, but none of us can define semi-literacy.... *Wipes a tear*

Anywhom, I do confess that I too, was one of the horrid, horrid n00bs...Last year, around this time, when I first came to Gaia. That all straightened up around Late August though, and I became mostly literate. And then, fully literate. And I was a much more happy person with myself.

Which is why the whole internet world would be much better if everyone wrote their posts first in WordPerfect (or something of the sort), before posting.

And God forbid we reread our posts before pressing the "submit" button.

But as terrible I may be at spelling/grammar, I have found that all the reading I have done (which is a lot. My mom's a Librarian, what else can I say), I've found that reading has really improved my spelling/grammar.

So in conclusion, people shound first write posts in WordPerfect, people should reread their posts, and people should read more. Yay conclusion!

As for dyslexia, it could be a variety of things. Such as adding in letters, like how I always add an 'e' at the end of words ('withe' is one of the most common). Or putting a word in twice in a row. Or how I have a sentence in mind but when I write it down, the words come out of order. Or when I glance at a word and see a completly different word. All of that would be dyslexic stuff. Truethfully, I've never been tested or anything, but I swear I am. Ummm.. yay confession?

I could say something about the word 'shound' but I'm not... *grins*

But seriously... I watch JB type for example, and she uses two fingers. Believe it or not, JB has really good speed and quite decent grammar/spelling for someone who only uses two fingers, but the point I'm trying to make is that some people make mistakes, not because they're inept at their ability, but because of small problems like that.

I myself would like to think I don't make many mistakes (if any at all), and I never go back and reread my posts, nor use wordperfect or the like. As for reading more, JB is an actual page at a library going to become a librarian and has read quite a bit. Grammar and spelling are sometimes due to technical issues as well.

Spelling errors/grammatical errors are fine by me. If the person is making a decent attempt, I skip over those.

Besdies, a sudty by a rseaecrh taem disvcored taht eevn wtih splelnig erorrs, as lnog as the frist and lsat letetr of a wrod are in the rgiht palce, the mnid can sitll unerdstnad waht is bieng siad.

The way we read english is quite unique to say the least. They discovered that as long as the first and last letters of a word are in the same place, we can just about always read it, due to the way we read english. Don't believe me? Could you read that last sentence? Or at least parts of it?

And even then, if a word is badly misspelled, we read the context, so we can always guess at what the word means--this is true regardless of language (except maybe symbolic language: chinese, japanese, hyroglyphic, etc...).

When JB wanted to start this guild and with me helping quite a bit, we looked at post quality, and not much their ability to spell/grammaticalize. Just check the rules for signing up and the intro to the guild and you'll see that we're quite forgiving. Of course, we're not saying that anyone who can peck at a keyboard and make decent length posts can join.

If you are still able to access some of the old Talisman posts, you'll see that I frequently have long posts, don't use anything such as wordperfect, don't spellcheck, and don't even reread (only go over what I typed to make sure the formatting--italics--are in the right places), yet I'm such the errors are quite minimal. JB is similar to that too.

Plus, when you read through a long post such as that, most of us (I think) do more skimming rather than reading unless we're truly involved in it, and that makes the errors even harder to spot. Also, unless you're truly looking for errors, you'll find them.

So in conclusion, don't try searching for errors. If you do, you'll always find them. Just enjoy what we've created and are trying to grow as opposed to nitpicking every little detail. Everyone has problems, and no one's perfect.

In fact, I'm so used to reading old english things that I almost always add a 'u' in words such as armour and colour and sometimes an 'e' at the end of 'shoppe'. wink

Old English, lmao. ^^

Alright can anyone answer me this:

Is the correct spelling this: Artefact
Or is it this: Artifact

I had people entering my thread saying that I had spelled it wrong and I should have used the other spelling. But in my English dictionary and on spell check it is Artefact, the way I spell it.

Any imput would be lovely. Lol, its just one of those words. ^^
