"Late May is a wonderful time of year," agreed the Duchess. She was still watching the pair out of the corner of her eye, and turned her head just slightly as to get a better view. "Terryn seems to be leading."

"You are a stranger and an amateur to this, but I'll have you know," answered Marcus reproachfully, a slight smile on his face as he met Terryn's eyes (not unaffectionately), "that when it comes to Marcus Damien Winters, there is no awkward or tense moment."

The earl chuckled. "She generally does. Quick, this way, they are coming." He led her into another row of hedges, listening from the other side.

"Oh really?" Terryn raised an eyebrow. "And if I were to just get dangerously close to hurting a certain feature of your anatomy?" She stopped, glancing down at her leg as though ready to kick.

Marcus shrugged. "Then your father would see, and while I doubled over in pain, you'd be whisked away to either an abbey or to yet another suitor."

"I doubt it." Terryn grinned deviously and gripped his hand tightly, especially for a woman. "I have ways of making things very subtle."

Marcus, for a moment, envisioned himself yelping in pain as Terryn looked on coldly. "Congratulations, but I'm afraid I don't." The fleeting moment that Marcus had actually looked forward to kissing Terryn was gone, but it had left him surprised.

"Well I could always just say you fainted from my stunning radiance." She flipped her hair rather uncharacteristically and frowned. "Alright...that felt wrong. Forgive me, but I fear I am not the mindless, blonde beauty that I am sure you seek."

Marcus shook his head. "I seeked them when I was at sixteen years of age. I found many, and was disappointed by all. That's not only for mindless blonde beauties, though."

"Well I certainly hope you are not implying that I am a mindless brunette." Terryn stlil held his hand in hers, ready to squeeze tighter again if absolutely necessary.

"Oh, goodness, no. I fear you. Thou art a liberated woman," answered Marcus with a small smirk. He began to lead her towards the elders. If they didn't hurry up, the elders would certainly wonder if they were plotting something.

"Liberated indeed." Terryn nodded in agreement. "Now if only I could get my servants to not tie my corsets so tightly, I truely would be liberated." She took a deep breath, frowning at the slight pain in her ribs. As they exited the gardens, Terryn looked around. "Where is my father?"

"My apologies, I was showing the duchess some of the carnations." Lord Arvin strolled out behind them, arm in arm with Marcus's grandmother. "Shall we return to our residence and perhaps have a cup of tea before these two go home for the evening?" The earl watched Terryn's reaction, but was only able to see a nondescript nod of agreement. "Lovely. To the carriages."

A few minutes later, Marcus and Terryn were in the coach, the door firmly shut. "I usually have a glass of warm wine before bed, but I suppose this will have to do," said Marcus, sitting down and feeling slightly nervous.

"Warm wine? I generally find that reading helps. I know, how dare a woman read something as precious and expensive as a book." Terryn grinned a little. "I am surprised that they agreed to let us go in the coach alone."

"Really, they're just looking for more chances to push us together," replied Marcus. "We're not the only ones conspiring, you know. I daresay I heard the word 'wedding' come into use more than once."

"Oh dear Lord..." Terryn slumped into her seat, sighing. "Those two are more ambitious than we are I believe." She frowned. "I only hope it does not brak my father's heart when he finds out none of this is real." She glanced up at him, giving him a sad half smile. Her father was really the only man she cared about, unless you counted the young boy who delivered the meat in the morning. He was always so cute and awkward looking nd reminded Terryn strongly of her youngest brother.

Marcus nodded sympathetically. "I understand that Grandmother thinks its all for the better that I get married and have ten children and whatnot, but it's just not the life I'm suited for. She has 4 other grandchildren, and all of them are more likely than I to be married."
