But they're expensive masses of pixels.

What's your point? confused

You should totally give all your gold to those of us too lazy to earn our own gold. >__> ;P <3

Why? So you can spend it on other masses of pixels? xp

Cutter vs. Jones Combat OOC:
Okay...I'm not usually one to gripe on game matters, but this most recent post rubs me the wrong way. Namely that it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I can't even reply to it...I tried, but I just couldn't get over it.

I really don't mean to sound insulting, but Telor, do you understand how sonic booms/the sound barrier/air pressure works? The sound barrier is most certainly not a constantly existing 'wall'. When a vehicle (I'll use that as example since only vehicles have breached the sound barrier) accelerates, it creates pressure waves as air is pushed by its movement. Air flows over the vehicle, creating a doppler effect from the air pressure left in its wake (we feel this slight pull when large trucks pass by at high speeds, for instance).
As the speed of the vehicle increases the pressure waves are forced together because they essentially can't 'get out of the way' of each other, eventually merging into a single shockwave at the speed of sound. Two sonic booms occur at that point, one at the nose of the vehicle (where air pressure is the greatest) and one at the tail of the vehicle (where air pressure is the least). Any concussive force that results from this is caused by the rapid shifts in air pressure making shockwaves.

Okay, so let's look a bit closer here.

Cutter set off a sonic boom point-blank at Jones. Normally completely impossible because there's no possible way Cutter's hand has enough surface area to induce a sonic boom of substantial effect even if his telekenisis allows him to exert enough force to breach the sound barrier. But what's this I hear? Bullwhips break the sound barrier and look how tiny they are? True, but also notice that there's no overwhelming sonic blast as a result...merely a sharp 'snap' sound. How much mass an object has (thus, how much air it can displace in movement) directly affects the force of the shockwave.

But okay, let's say Cutter is capable of exerting a sonic boom of transonic-jet quality. That mean's he's displacing an immense amount of air in the palm of his hand. Given shockwaves' funny trait of traveling in radial form, he'd be caught not only in both sonic booms but also blown away by the breach in air pressure, then pulled back in as the air rushes in to fill the vacuum he's created.
When supersonic flight was still experimental, planes built without the capacity to withstand the g-forces of traveling at such high velocities literally shredded in mid-air when approaching the speed of sound. Heck, land-based vehicles nowadays blow to pieces breaking 400mph if they're not designed to withstand the force.

So factoring in the shockwave, the grevious shifts in air pressure, and the fact that high decible sounds travel very well through semi-liquid mediums (like, oh, I don't know...human bodies, what with their large quantities of blood and fluids), Cutter would more or less explode the moment he set off a sonic boom.

surprised hey wouldn't that character from X Men with the sonic boom thing not be a functional character?

Eh...physics is what you invited me here for, remember? ^^;

Also, I don't bother trying to explain Marvel anymore. They retcon everything so often there's no point in even bothering making an attempt, especially since a lot of the characters' powers differ depending on who's writing the comic at the time. ><

Okay, well I've done some research, which I admittedly should have done beforehand, and all Cutter would have to do is create enough of a rapid change of pressure to cause intersecting shockwaves, and then direct it away from himself.
The power of the boom is dependant on how much air is being accelerated from high-pressure zones into negative-pressure zones and forced to go supersonic.

Also, that's not the only cause of sonic booms, some high-speed trains cause them in tunnels, due the rapid compression of its wake.

I have no idea what you're bringing the Doppler effect into this for, that has to do with perception of wavelengths, which would really only affect the perception of the sound of the boom.

Anyway, there's many ways to create a substantial boom, and I've decided to stand by my choice of attack.

Oh, and most firearms also break the sound barrier routinely.

Sorry for any confusion with the Doppler effect; I got into rant-mode and my mind wandered while working on the process of movement and alterations in air pressure. ^^;

Sonic booms are caused by lots of different things (trains and guns included, of course. There's a particular mag-train in Japan that would routinely cause sonic booms while passing through a tunnel if not for a specific build in the tunnel itself). I personally can buy Cutter being able to create a sonic boom with his telekinesis: he's super-powered, so it's plausible since that automatically gives him a slight advantage over general physics.

What I was debating was whether Cutter could create a sonic boom substantial enough to actually be physically damaging and how he could be unaffected by the dramatic change in the environment such an attack would cause.

Well, I don't know, that would be entirely dependant on how much air he could both accelerate to supersonic speed and at the same time deflect the sonics so it wouldn't deafen him and break his delicate human bones.
I mean, while he's young, he has a LOT of experience with his powers and he's been fighting with them for a long time, so he's got a high amount of power reserve, strength and control.

Maybe a compromise, it wouldn't be quite as powerful as a jet boom, and rapid suction of air going supersonic would catapult him possibly over Jones into some tombstones or something.
I dunno, this seems like something that should have been settled over PMs. sweatdrop
