Dear Diary,

As I write this I am sitting in one of the most amazing places I can imagine. I have to keep stopping to brush my hair out of my face, as strong winds whip by. You mightn't believe me, but I'm sitting at the very top of an incredibly high, possibly 15 story, tree!

Maybe I should have started writing before this point, but I couldn't think of a better place to begin this record of my new adventures than right here, where it will hopefully all begin. This tree, so fantastically shaped, is apparently a homing device of some kind for the Ieldi spirits as it came from their homeworld. It has many 'shelves' which are actually more like platforms the size of an average room. On these shelves we are to place our relics and try to lure an Ieldi spirit into them.

It sounds complicated, but quite exciting, too!

For some reason, I chose a shelf at the top right of the tree. I had a feeling it would provide some beautiful views, and I was right. Not only can you see most of the tree from here, it has a gorgeous view (if you like looking straight down o.O ) of the pool at the base of the tree, not to mention how far you can see into the distance from here. I think there will be some truly gorgeous sunrises and sunsets to be seen from this perch of mine.

Some people may think I'm crazy for choosing so high a shelf - the winds do get fairly strong up here - but it's accessible by stairs alone (no ladders to make carrying gifts and decorations harder). Additionally, my shelf has two of its three sides protected. Great for blocking out half the winds and it also gives me some 'safe' sides to stick to.

Today was my first visit to the shelf. I brought with me several small items, both to attract a spirit and to aid in my own comfort when waiting. In the corner, a climbing rose grows on a butterfly cage, filling the air with a delicate fragrance. I've hung several paper lanterns from smaller branches above me. They're very pretty and perhaps it will make this shelf more welcoming at night with several lights around.

I'm sitting on some large comfy cushions, heavy enough to not be blown away by the wind. I think they're more practical for me than a chair at this stage - I don't fancy carrying a chair all the way up to the top of this tree gonk

On my next visit, I think I'll bring some more decorations and also some soothing background music - not only for attracting and reassuring a flighty spirit, but I think it might soothe my frazzled nerves a bit, too ^^;;

Dear Diary,

Today I write this huddled against the trunk of this giant tree, as the winds are even stronger. Perhaps it's just the time of day? I certainly hope that an Ieldi child will be more familiar with this than I am, or I will will be incredibly worried for it.

As promised, I brought several more gifts today, including the discman with music I had mentioned. It is a nice accompaniment to the rushing wind and gentle bell chimes.

I also brought up a vase of orchids (netting bags that can be slung over a shoulder while walking/climbing are so hady ^_~ ), a small journal and pen to eventually give to my Ieldi, a lotus-shaped bell/chime of sorts and an assortment of foods to tempt a spirit into wanting to be solid again and be able to eat them.

... Apart from the cherries, it's all some of my favourite food, too. Must. Resist. Snacking. Urges. >_<

Dear Diary,

Oh wow, I nearly died this morning. I went straight to Ieldi HQ and what should be waiting for me but my relic? whee It's so gorgeous - rounded in shape, with clumps of bright red feathers sticking out from the back and orange-red whirls of fire near the nest entrance. I don't know if I'm describing it very well. Here's a snapshot I took of it:
User Image
I can't help but feel that it will attract a very bright and beautiful Ieldi.

Speaking of attracting the Ieldi, there have been several reports of spirit sightings at night! I think I will have to stay here later than usual and go spirit-watching myself. Rasu has said they are attracted to light - I'm glad I've already got some paper lanterns then.

Maybe I could find something else, too... I don't want to make the area too bright (Sosi keeps worrying the tree will turn into a Vegas strip), but maybe I can find something that glows in the dark?

Anyway, after receiving my relic this morning I carried it up the stairs. This relic isn't light, you know! I'm suddenly very sympathetic towards Rasu, who hurt her back carrying Youko's up to the top right shelf. I may have just done the same.

... I think I shall just sit here and not move for a very long time sweatdrop

I also dropped off a cute kitty plushie that Karma left for me in HQ. It's very cute. She says it reminded her of the Ieldi - maybe because of the wings? It does appear to be a very spirit-like cat...

Shopping is getting harder. There are so many stores to browse through and I end up disappointed in their range. Perhaps I will follow Sosi's example and start making some items myself.

... When I can move again.

Lying on the floor of her shelf, thankful for the foresight to have cushions, Kali scribbled away in her journal. The soft light of the paper lanterns providing just enough light for writing.

Her progress was rather haphazard and she paused often to stare up at the night sky and branches above her.

Kali
Dear Diary,

Here I am, as planned, spirit watching. It brings back memories of a much younger me bird watching. The principles seem the same - pick a comfy spot, then don't move, and have lots of patience.

It's really very ethereal, to be here under the stars with several glowing lights of spirits flitting through the tree. It makes it seem less bare... and yet no less mournful. It makes me sad to think of what these spirits went though, so I can't imagine how the spirits themselves with deal with everything that has happened.

If I turn my head from here, I can see faint lights in the distance, passing by shelves both empty and occupied. Maybe sometime soon a spirit will choose one of these relics and we'll finally be able to see

Kali broke off writing as a light in the corner of her eye grew brighter. Not daring to move her hand, or turn her head, she strained her eyes to view the source.

An ieldi spirit was hovering near the lanterns.

Not realising she'd been holding her breath, Kali was startled when she found herself gasping for air. The sound, though tiny, was enough to scare the timid creature away.

Kali
I think I've just been visited by a spirit. I wonder if it will come back later? Was it attracted by the light, the relic, or both?

I hope I see another one this close soon.

... It was so shy, so easy to scare. I really hope I'm ready for this.

It was the cold that eventually awoke her. Shivering, Kali wondered what had happened to the heater... and then realised she was curled up awkwardly on cushions with only a thin blanket around her.

Making a sour face, she realised she should have gone home after the first Ieldi sighting and disappearing. 'Maybe later,' she thought to her relic, turning slowly to inspect it.

... There was a spirit hovering even closer than before!

Ack, what had Rasu said? Um... stay quiet? No, that couldn't be right. Eat the spirit? Idiot! 'Greet' the spirit.

"Um, hi there," she called softly to it, not daring to move yet. "Do you like the nest?"

((Sorry I haven't posted much, I have been very sick and stuck at home.))

Worried eyes searched for the spirit as Kali returned to the shelf yet again. Lately it seemed that the spirit was hiding from her... but at least it seemed to like the flowers...

Smiling reassuringly, she said softly, "I brought you some more gifts."

Although she approached cautiously, the spirit still immediately fled to the furthest flower (in this case, the roses). On the small wooden table next to the relic she placed a brass candelabra with strawberry scented candles. On the other side of the table, another small candle with placed - this one scented with patchouli, which was Kali's favourite candle scent. Also out of her bag came a large book.

"Look," she held it up. "Birds. Maybe you'll see someone you recognise..."

Placing the book back down on the bench, she flicked through some pages to reveal bright photos and paintings of different birds in their natural environments. The book was heavy enough to not be blown away, although a strong wind would flick through the pages...

With the gifts in their new places, Kali grabbed the sketchpad and markers left for the spirit. Moving back from the new items, she settled herself on cushions against the trunk and began sketching.

At first she drew random items from her mind - a tree, butterfly, a dolphin... But an idea soon struck and she found herself glancing over at the spirit and attempting to capture its likeness.

The spirit waited until it was certain Kali was settled and approached the new items. Peeking from the corner of her eyes, Kali noticed it inspect the new candles. She wondered if it could smell at all in this stage? It seemed to like the shape of the candelabra, following the shape up and down, bobbing in the air.

It paused above the book, studying the current image. As Kali watched it seemed to glow brighter in appreciation. Kali laughed delightedly and the spirit immediately faded and darted back to hide in the flowers.

"Oh, I'm sorry," she called softly. "I'm not scary, really. I'm here to help - I'll look after you and protect you, if you let me..."

The soft, coaxing tone seemed to soothe the spirit and it peeped out once more.

Kali held up her sketch of the Ieldi to appease it. "Look, aren't you gorgeous?"

Wide-eyed, if such a thing could really apply to a spirit, the Ieldi drifted closer, darted back, and then drifted closer again. Kali knew it wasn't the greatest - Copic markers and five minutes - but it was colourful and it was easy to tell she had been drawing the spirit. It seemed flattered and intrigued.

As the spirit began darting around the sketches littered around Kali, she couldn't help but laugh again. And this time the spirit didn't run away.

After making the hike back up to her shelf, Kali sat down and wrote:

Quote:
Dear Diary,

I think my spirit responded well to my quick sketches yesterday. It made me so happy to be able to coax it out from the flowers. Hmmm... orchids and copic markers... does it like bright colours?

Yesterday I kept reminding myself that my spirit had actually been a living being, just as intelligent as any human. Under the circumstances, I think this little one is taking everything a lot better than I would in its place. I must keep writing 'it', which seems harsh, but I have no clue whether this spirit is male or female and I don't want to insult it.

After my success with the art yesterday, today in my bag I brought

Kali broke off writing as she realised something was making small thumping noises. Glancing to the left, she was shocked to find the spirit bumping into the bag she'd brought. When it noticed her watching, the spirit jumped back a bit.

"It's okay," Kali smiled. "I won't be mad. You want to see what I brought you that badly? Hoping for more pretty colours?"

Whether it was the words or the intention, the spirit seemed to understand and glowed brightly. While Kali went digging through the bag, it flittered around in circles - but always keeping a safe distance away.

"Let's see," Kali muttered to herself. "Paints... aha, a pallette... oh damn, did the brushes get loose?" Removing the items from the bag, she righted a jar and began stuffing loose pencils, brushes, rulers, all kinds of loose art materials back into it.

User Image User Image User Image

When the spirit saw the materials, it froze in the air. Noticing that something was different Kali looked up. The Ieldi seemed fainter somehow, wavering in mind and appearance.

Kali frowned, worried. "Don't you like -?"

She broke off as the spirit hesitantly moved closer. One wings pointed to the art supplies and then back to itself.

"For you?" Kali guessed. "Of course!"

Abruptly the spirit pulsed brighter than ever and dove at the paints and brushes. Like a firefly and it darted back and forth between the objects, as though reacquainting itself with beloved possessions.

Beaming, Kali asked, "So you like to paint?"

The spirit floated up before Kali and puffed up in size and glow. I'm the best! it seemed to be saying.

Kali laughed and began mixing up paint on the pallete. She then set out a pile of paper for himself and her Ieldi. "Um... I'm not sure... can you touch things physically?"

With a quick pulse of energy, the spirit answered Kali's question by dabbing the 'feathers' of one wing into the paint and then trailing the feathers over the page.

"Wow," Kali breathed. This truly was one clever spirit. Reaching for the paintbrushes, Kali bent her head to her own painting.

((Will do another post later (possibly still today or tomorrow) finishing up the paintdate.))

Kali
Dear Diary,

Sorry for the abrupt cutoff, but my spirit has a way of passively demanding attention. I think it liked my surprise though - we've both spent the past hour or so painting.

I've finished - I'm not sure how good my painting is, but I've done the best I can. I hope my spirit will like it.

Oh, it might be finished now. It has moved back to study his work and seems to be done with it...

In actuality, the spirit didn't seem very happy with its painting, Kali realised. It seemed to be drooping somewhat and getting a little upset.

She smiled faintly. "I know how you feel," she told it. "When your art doesn't turn out the way you thought it would - it's very sad, isn't it?"

The spirit fluttered weakly and seemed to be considering her words. It swooped back to its painting again and vibrated in place, like an angry bee. The glowing eyes turned back and Kali's direction and the spirit slumped and seemed to grow fainter.

"It's alright," Kali hastily reassured it. "You've only had spirit wings to work with, after all. Maybe if you let yourself be reborn...?" She trailed off suggestively.

The spirit seemed to consider the idea, but apparently wasn't in the mood to make any kind of decisions.

"Okay," Kali sensed a change of subject was needed. "Wanna see mine?"

A few feather tendrils were extended cautiously.

"Mine isn't the best either," she warned before holding up her painting.

Pausing, the Ieldi seemed first frozen and then mystified. The painting was once again of the spirit - but this time artistic license had been taken to make the Ieldi seem more like a phoenix.

"This is a phoenix," Kali explained, babbling away somewhat. "I know you're not one, of course, but you reminded me of one before when you were so happy about the paints. Do you know about them? They're mythological birds of fire, and when they died they were reborn again from the ashes, so they never fully died at all..." She broke off. "But you're from a bird-like race, right? So maybe you've got your own phoenix myths...?"

The spirit still wasn't reacting except to drift slowly closer. Kali immediately worried. What if the Ieldi did have phoenix myths? What if it was sacreligious or something to paint one or to compare this spirit to one? eek

"Um..." Kali began to freak slightly. "I'm really sorry if you don't like it..!"

A soft pulse. Was the spirit trying... to reassure her? Now that was a change.

Those small tendrils were reaching out again, several 'feathers' tracing over the paper. The spirit seemed more corporeal again - colour and definition were back.

"You like it then?" asked Kali gently.

Another pulse and the spirit swelled slightly. It seemed... honoured.

'I guess maybe phoenixes are known to them,' she thought. 'And it's not bad at all to compare this little one to something like that. That, or it just likes the colours and the myth.'

Abruptly the spirit's mood changed again and it darted back to its own painting. Rather shyly, the feather tendrils beckoned Kali over.

Studying the painting, Kali saw why the spirit was upset. It was around the level of a young child, and from the enthusiasm with which the spirit had met the gift of art supplies, it had a lot of experience and talent - it had expected better from itself. It was still good, she thought. A little messy due to working with spirit tendrils, but she could make sense of it... she thought.

"It looks kind of like this tree," she noted. The spirit dimmed. "But different... like it's the same kind of tree - and Ieldi tree - but not this one." At this, the spirit brightened again.

Kali studied the tree - taller, with slightly more shelves in its branches... and buildings that might be houses. "Was this... your home?"

Glowing even brighter, the spirit splayed out its 'feathers'... and then dimmed again as it too studied the picture. The feathers began to droop again.

"I'm so sorry," Kali whispered, moved by this spirit's - no, this person's - distress. "But you have a chance to start again, you know. The kyunru Pantheon saved this tree and brought it here. Lots of spirits have followed it here as well. You can have a new life, and so can lots of other spirits."

At the mention of the Pantheon the spirit twitched a bit in recognition. It seemed to grow more thoughtful at the mention of more spirits being able to join it here.

Sensing another change of subject was due, Kali picked up both paintings. "How about we tape these up on the wall, uh, trunk?" she suggested.

Watching the spirit nod and flutter around to help direct the best arrangement, Kali smiled in relief. Maybe she was really helping after all...

At home, Kalindara
Dear Diary,

I didn't notice until I was back home, but it seems I've lost a gold bracelet of mine.

User Image

I was so sure I was wearing it today, but apparently not. I don't see how it could have fallen off and I wasn't wearing it when I got home. I've looked through my room, but I can't find it there either.

... I wonder what happened to it?

It was a rather confused Kali who came back to the shelf the next day. No matter how hard she'd searched last night, she hadn't been able to find that bracelet...

She made herself perk up as she stepped out onto her shelf. "Little spirit, are you here?" she called. "I have some pretty things to help cheer you up..."

The spirit cautiously emerged from hiding in the orchids. It still seemed rather upset about yesterday's painting.

"I know," Kali commiserated. "But you can't give up just because one painting didn't turn out like you expected... Practice makes perfect, you know. And you do kinda have a new body - um, form, and all to deal with, too. I doubt any other spirit could do half as well!"

With the praise, the spirit seemed to brighten just the tiniest bit. But it still seemed to have a little raincloud over its head.

"Ah well," Kali sighed. "Hey, I promised you some pretty gifts, didn't I?"

Happily distracted, the spirit nodded.

"Let's see..." she rummaged through her bag again. (Sometimes it seemed like that was all she ever did up here.) "I had this fountain made for you... and then I found this lamp in a store - and luckily they both run on batteries," she winked.

User Image User Image

Intrigued, the spirit swooped down on the gifts as they were set up. Feathers from one wing swiped back and forth through the water of the fountain, as though reacquainting itself with a foreign substance.

It hadn't forgotten how to play either - Kali soon found herself dotted with droplets of water. She laughed, truly happy to have delighted her spirit. In return, the spirit seemed happy at Kali's mood, reassured that nothing bad would happen as a result of splashing this bigger being.

The lava lamp had an almost hypnotic effect on the spirit. Glowing eyes wide, it floated up and down in time with one of the larger lava bubbles.

Kali let the spirit be and sat down to write in her journal.

Quote:
Dear Diary,

I'm not sure if my spirit is truly over its depression regarding the painting, but at least it seems fairly easy to distract or cheer up. It really loves bright colours and pretty things - and I suppose it helps when those things are new to it.

I hope it will choose to be reborn. There are so many things to show an Ieldi that simply can't be brought up here, or that simply can't be moved at all.

Rasu says not to bring foreign people or creatures up here during this bonding stage. Which is sad, because judging from my spirit's reaction to the mention of kyunru it would probably like other animals. Maybe I can take it to a zoo when it's older, and-

The pen paused on the page as Kali thought she saw a bright glint coming from within the relic itself. She shook her head. That was ridiculous, right? The Ieldi was showing no signs of entering the relic - she must be dreaming things.

((From teh spirit's POV))

Alone, the little spirit hovered in its usual place among the orchids. Wing tendrils reached out and waved gently, as though taking in all its pretty possessions.

Emerging from the flowers, it flew in lazy circles. Occasionally it dipped low enough to brush up against some of the treasures, liking the softness of the plushie cat, the cool sensation of water from the fountain, batting at the lotus bell.

It didn't seem so much bored as relaxed and considering. It wasn't stupid - it knew the large being kept mentioning being reborn for a reason and that these gifts were bribes of a sort. Were the bribes good enough to risk that bad things that could happen as well though?

The spirit dropped and dimmed, as though sighing. It hovered near the painting materials for a moment before darting off again. It didn't want to think bad thoughts.

In need of cheering up, the spirit flew closer to the relic. Being careful to keep a certain distance away, it gradually extended its 'feathers' until, without it otherwise moving, long thin tendrils reached inside the wooden nest. Quickly withdrawing, they brought with them a golden bracelet.

Hugging the shiny object to its 'body', the Ieldi's colour brightened and it grew slightly in size. Cheered, it danced back to its hideaway in the orchids, planning some quality time with the pilfered item before returning it to the hiding place.

Tossing and turning at home, Kali punched her pillow and settled back down to sleep. It was a good thing she had nothing planned for tomorrow and could just sleep in...

Sinking back down into dreams, Kali thought she felt a prickle down her spine... kinda like magic. 'Nah,' Kali told herself, 'you're imagining things. Just a dream.'

It was a nice dream though. One of those Kyun gods appeared for a moment and then Kali was stnanding in the middle of her shelf. She glanced around, confused. This was feeling kind of real, for a dream... But then, that sometimes happened, Kali shook her head and dismissed the thought.

A laugh escaped as her spirit noticed her and darted forward. "I'm sorry, did you miss me?" she asked, smiling as the spirit danced around her. "I haven't visited lately, have I? I won't leave you alone like that again, I promise."

The spirit pulses with colour, and Kali guessed she had been forgiven. Her spirit continues to flutter around excitedly though.

"Did something nice happen?" she asked.

A kind of half-pulse.

"Um... something nice is going to happen then?"

Bingo. Biiiiiig colour and size pulse. The spirit patted at Kali's face with feather tendrils before darted over to the relic. It hovered near the entrance and Kali felt her jaw dropping.

"You... want to be reborn? Really?" she gaped.

The spirit nodded.

"Oh wow... I'm... so glad," Kali smiled and felt tears stinging at her eyes. It was somehow very humbling to think that she had convinced something to give life another chance. She resolved to do much better in looking after the spirit; she'd make sure it wasn't lonely and that nothing ever hurt it... Hopefully without being overprotective ^^;;

With a little wave of its tendrils, the spirit darted inside.

Walking over, Kali bent down and looked inside. It was very dark, but the spirit seemed happily curled up around... something...

User Image

Kali awoke with a shock, bolting upright in her bed. That was just a dream... right? She glanced at her alarm clock - morning already. Fine then, time to go visit her spirit and see if that had been real or not.

Halfway out of bed, she paused. "Was that my bracelet the spirit had?!"

It was a frantic Kali who tried to race up the tree to her shelf, progress hindered by the large amount of objects she carried. A sleeping bag was slung over one shoulder, pillow under one arm, blankets, food... If her dream had been real, she wouldn't be leaving her spirit's side for some time.

Finally arriving at the top of the tree - and cursing her choice of location - Kali dropped her possessions on the floor and dashed over to the relic. Eyes wide, she knelt down and peered inside.

A dim red pulse appeared in the darkness and Kali's eyes adjusted to see a fainting waving of tendrils. Her joy at seeing the dream come true was replaced by concern - her spirit seemed very tired, or disoriented by this new location. With a shiver, it curled up tighter around a golden object.

"I'm so glad you trusted me," she spoke softly as she made her comfortable by the relic's opening. "You'll really like it here in Gaia - I promise I'll show you lots of beautiful things..."

She wasn't sure if the spirit understood her in its current condition. It seemed to calm itself though, so maybe it was just reassured by the familiar sound of her voice.

"Speaking of showing you things, Tiagra made you something nice again. She's giving us lots of presents, isn't she?" Kali smiled. "I think you'll like this one - look."

A red-orange plushie was held up to the relic. It was easy to see the resemblance the toy had to the bright spirit.

User Image

"Isn't it cute?"

Another sleepy tendril wave.

Kali gave a tender smile. "I knew you'd like it. It'll be waiting here for you when you... y'know, finish whatever happens in there," she waved a hand vaguely. No one had ever really gone into specifics about this part.

Eyeing the object the spirit was curled around, Kali's mouth tightened slightly. "And then we're also gonna have a talk about 'borrowing' pretty things," she muttered.

Dear Diary,

Wow, where to begin? My spirit has finally entered his relic. Of course, I don't know for sure that the spirit is male, but after all this time I can't think of him as an 'it', so this is my best guess until then.

... Although with the theft of my bracelet, maybe it is a girl after jewellery? Ah well, I guess we'll know soon enough.

He seems very sleepy at the moment. Much like when I was trying to attract and then calm him, I play soothing, soft background music and read to him. Hopefully this can keep him centered and reassure him that everything is okay.

I think it might be helping. He does seem very calm in his 'sleep'. At least he isn't panicking in there or having nightmares, I suppose.

Kali stopped writing as one hand flew to her mouth to cover a yawn.

Speaking of which, he isn't the only one who needs some sleep around here. I guess I'll wait and see what tomorrow brings.

Dear Diary,

The time for my spirit's awakening may be sooner than I had thought. Already four other Ieldi have been reborn. I could scarcely believe it when I heard!

I wonder what they look like? Of course I know the warnings about not having visitors until our Ieldi are less flighty and skitish... but maybe a photo or two isn't out of the question?

My spirit sleeps on. I explain about the other four Ieldi in hushed tones. Maybe a little reassurance is all he needs to achieve this stage himself. This is proof that it isn't dangerous and won't hurt, I tell him. I really hope I'm not lying.

While I spoke to my spirit, I had been flicking through a book of baby names. My spirit deserves a beautiful name to go with his artist's soul. So far, I am leaning towards 'Zayn', which is good for either a boy or a girl (though for some reason I think he will be male).

Only two more spirits to go - my Zayn and Euphoric's spirit. I wonder how they'll all look?
