I heard that he origionally did not mean for them to be a couple, but said it was up to the fans. I also heard that he heard it somewhere and liked the idea, so put some hints of it into teh anime. it had been too late to do that in the manga. and when did kurama hug hiei?

I think it's obvious that the people to made the anime liked the idea of Kurama and Hiei together (or at least thought it would gain viewers) or they wouldn't have created two official pictures of the most reserved and serious characters in the series getting all snuggly? Can you imagine Hiei EVER letting someone hug him unless he really, really cared for them? Of course you can't.
And as for the original manga, since Itsuki is very openly in love with Sensui, Togashi obviously isn't against the idea of two males loving each other. And he probably shares a lot of the same views as his wife, or they wouldn't have gotten married! And we know SHE sure as bologna isn't against same sex love affairs.
So yeah, i just repeated some of the things everyone else already said!
And as for Mukuro... it's obvious she loves Hiei, but it's even more obvious that she is his MOMMY! AHA!! I mean he follows her all around like a little puppy or something and i can so just see her dressing him up in one of those cute little sailor suits with a hat and a big lollipop just to make him mad and then laugh evilly. Yeah... And Mukuro wouldn't get in the way of Kurama and Hiei's love, because she too is a yaoi fangirl! Mukuro can never have a boyfriend of her own because her female parts are all horrifically melted away by acid and her life has sucked so much that's she's all, 'I am dead inside...' So since she can't have love herself, she wants to see Kurama and Hiei be in love! And maybe sneak some pictures (cybernetic eye = spy camera??)
And maybe some people haven't seen this yet, but at one point in the tournament she says something, and then Hiei's all like, 'Everyone's an enemy i'll kill anyone, rah' And she's all OH REALLY??? and then totally not discreetly looks over at KURAMA. So ha. She knows better than him what he wants. And that's my theory.

I am all out fan of KuramaX Hiei but I have some views...theres a eppisode from what I read in spoilers that Hiei gave Kurama his tear gem to give to Yukina but Kurama sorta teased him alittle bit saying he could not except this but then said he was joking and explained that he was NOT gay, I know I'm gonna get random objects thrown at me and questioning on why the hell I'm here anyways, but that's all solid facts.
I know the anime tries to show hints, but their relationship is mostly based on trust, and yeah offical pictures...it's for sick minded people like me who thought,"hey...I never knew they were a couple...that's hot." so I believe it's mostly based on fandom like take doujinshi for instence, the fans of the show got some ideas together and thought creating doujinshi as some of the guys as couples would be a fun idea, and I have to agree with that.
Now I know there's already the gay couple on yu yu hakusho, the itsuki and sensui, so I guess togashi-sama doesn't care if there is a hint for relationship between Kurama and Hiei or not...and along with that there's proff the Kurama is not gay, if you read two shot's in the manga there his almost relationship with Maya, but it never happened because he erased her memory after he resuced her from that demon dude( I forgot his name-.-) of being kidnapped and ever loving him because he didn't want her hurt because of his old demon self becaused he LOVED her back.
And now...Hiei and Mukoro...I think there a realtionship between them, mostly trust with a little bit of love, because yet again another spoiler, when hiei was uncounsice, Mukoro had bonded with him during that while, giving her mind and heart to him and so she removes her clothes infront of him because she wanted to give her body to him,but showing how most of her body is deformed,but of course she drenched herself in acid because on the day she was born she was sexually abused by her father, on which on her every birthday he would cut open a part of her body and thrust into her, that's the reason she drenched herself in acid in order to get away from her father and start a new life, and not to mention later on meet Hiei. And a way Hiei shows he cares for her back is by the help of Kurama(in loving friendship), he went to Mukoro's father and gave him a plant, to which fused into his body and Hiei gave Mukoro her father for her birthday so she would have the please to kill her father for all the thing's he's done.
Well this is all my facts I've gathered from both anime and manga, now after you took your time on reading and wonder why the hell I'm here...it's because I like the idea of Kurama and Hiei as a couple, and I'm just sick minded like that, BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! not to mention I love the art work^.^

That moment in one of the late episodes... whichever number it was... I didn't pay attention, whatever- WAS a taunty little tease of a joke, but that's all I really took it for. And the fact that Hiei would even trust Kurama to do that is like: wohshit in itself. I mean, I joke people like that. And they get mad at me too. biggrin But they love me anyway, because I buy the ice cream.
And as far as all that Hiei x Mukuro shturff goes, I REALLY see more a mother & son relationship going, or a brother & sister, or maybe a Will & Grace. I don't know. They seem a little too SIMILAR to care for each other in a romaaaantic way. They don't act too jolly-loving for their own selves, so them liking each other wouldn't make much sense to me.
Of course I'm me and extremely biased. biggrin

I blame the teasing.. near the end, Togashi did have Kurama say "I'm sorry Hiei, but I just don't like you that way"... or something ot that extent.... but then again.. he also had Shizuru tell Kuwabara and Kurama not to get too friendly when they were straying behind everyone else and chatting... o.o;
So really.. no they aren't really together in it... so yeah.. their love is fan-made.. I'm afraid.
P.S... I love you Idiom.. someone else who thinks Mukuro and Hiei's relationship is like a mother-son thing ;_; *hugs*
and sorry if anyone else already said this.. I'm lazy and only reaf the post before mine and the first one mad ...

Me, being a big Sailor Moon fan since second grade, I was thinking for a second when someone said "We know Naoko isn't against same sex relationships" I was thinking "I don't remember any....D'oh! Haruka and Michiru! DUH!!!" Sorry, random. lol Haruka kissed Usagi in the manga once. @.@ lol So yeah, can't dislike it too much. And as for Togashi...hmm. Everything's already been covered.

When Hiei gives Kurama his hirui stone to give to Yukina, Kurama says something to the effect of "I don't swing that way." But then he said he was joking, which I took to literally mean "I know you weren't offering it to me," and to figuratively mean "Well, I might swing that way, ponder ponder..."
