SirSquintus Definitely! If there can be jazz-bass clarinet. There should be jazz-clarinet. Even though everyone knows bass pwns soprano any day? (kidding- or am I? xd ) Our jazz band has no clarinets. It barely has saxes. And I understand why. It's obnoxious. I know there can be GOOD jazz clarinetists, but they are few and far between. Much of jazz music for clarinet ends up just being a series of squeaks anyway. And no one wants to listen to that. Few composers of jazz even score for clarinet anymore. It's a dying thing. I can see why there might be a need for them. I mean, even in regular bands and marching bands, clarinets make good filler instruments. Like they add a tone to the band that you definitely notice missing if it indeed is. But I don't think they're always necessary as melody or solo instruments. Saxes do just fine for jazz.

Good point about the squeaks. But clarinets are sometimes used to "smear" notes by not covering their holes. A effect that is nice in jazz. Besides that.. Nyeh... I know bass clarinets do "slap-tounging". Which is fun stuff.

Saxes do just fine for jazz. you are right about the squeaks. HOWEVER clarinets ARE really nice solo/melody instruments... to me anyway. and I think, with practice, I, and other jazz clarinets COULD overcome the squeaks. and about the music... we could play trumpet or tenor sax parts! but you DO bring up a good point.

Jazz has its roots in ragtime, and the clarinet was one of the original ragtime instruments. Of course, it's been in jazz since the dawn of jazz history, and it should stay

I played jazz clarinet in my middle school jazz band. But my high school director wont hear of it. He won't let me march bassoon either. He has his list of definite does and don'ts, and refuses to sway from it. I think if done right it can sound good. if your good with it, GO FOR IT!

Dude, having clarinet players in jazz bands are so awesome. You know sometimes you need to have the clarinet texture in a band? Well, clarinets sound so vibrate!
