The Purchase

It was raining, it always seemed to rain whenever Nikolai actually wanted to go out for more then food. If he wanted to go to the antique store, it rained, but if he was heading to school it was perfectly sunny. He just assumed it was his luck. At least it helped the flowers on his balcony grow, that was a nice thing to think of.

He'd been heading down to the bookstore, he wanted to look to see if the new book called "Heart, Soul and Body: A look into the Eras" had arrived. He'd pre-ordered it months ago and was hoping that it would be in early. The book store was approximately four blocks from his apartment, so rather then start up his motorcycle, he put on a coat and walked.

Besides the rain, the day was beautiful. The sun was shining so you could see rainbows in the water as the rain drops fell to the world. It was a pretty affect and made it worth the walk through down the streets.

Waving at the lady on the corner, Nikolai stopped at a cross walk. Just two more streets at he was there.

Normally, Nikolai never got distracted. He was very good at toning out unnecessary things to get what he needed to be done, done. However today, something made him look over. Something seemed to call to him, telling him to turn his head and glance at new shop. Next to him was an incense shop, their pretty holders on display in the window. Tilting his head, Nikolai smiled. "Might as well," he muttered before turning and heading into the shop, the homey feeling inside helping to dispel the chill from the rainy streets.

Looking around the wooden walls, he smiled to the attendant, a nice looking young lady. He could use some more incense, his last batch had run out a week ago. Wonder if they have any sandalwood, he thought as he read over the different scents. Cinnamon, apple, spiced plum, opium.

"Opium," he muttered with a lift of his eyebrow. Interesting, he'd heard it had a wonderful scent, very relaxing. Picking up the oil and burner he smiled. It wasn't too expensive so if it smelled horrible it wouldn't be a waste.

The girl behind the counter helped him fairly quickly smiling at him as he paid then waved when he turned around. "Thank you for your purchase," he heard as he was leaving the cute little shop, something he'd have to visit again.

Looking down the street, Nikolai smiled, it'd stopped rainy, perhaps his luck was changing. With that smile still stretched over his lips, he walked down the street heading for the bookstore. He couldn't wait to get home and light the incense.

The Lighting

After placing his books on his desk, Nikolai took the burner and oil from their protective wrapping. He'd been thinking almost all day when to burn the oil and realized that it'd be perfect to light when he was studying. The calming smell would help him concentrate.

"Matches... where's the matches," he mumbled as he started to pick up papers and books. They'd been up here an hour ago, he'd used one to light a fir- Oh the fireplace.

After coming back from the fireplace with the box of matches in hand he struck one and light the candle under the oil. The smell didn't come immediately, however when the calming scent began to fill the room, Nikolai smiled. He barely noticed the odd way the green smoke was curling around, almost seductively. Like a lovers hand coming to cup his cheek.

It was calming and it did help him work. "I might have to buy more of this," he muttered as he began to work out the essay questions.

The Discovery

Nikolai had decided to be lazy today, the black haired young man had spent almost the entire day in his apartment reading a few of his newest books. His father would have been very displeased, 'You spend too much time in fairy tales!' his father would say with his mother shaking her beautifully painted face. They were still upset he'd chosen history as a profession when he had all the leads to get him a nice comfy doctors job.

What they didn't understand is that he was planning on being a doctor, he was just taking a few extra courses as well, he couldn't spend every day staring at the anatomy of a human being or he'd go insane.

He was already sure that the stress of learning the inner workings of the human body had already taken a toll on him, he'd nearly used all of his opium oil in just a month. A month, for someone who never lite the candles he had spread throughout his house. Today would mark the last drop, he'd have to drop by the store sometime this week to pick up some more.

Heaving a heavy sigh, Nikolai looked up at the clock, 5:30pm. Amazing it'd been 2 o-clock last he checked. Why did 5:30 stand out so vividly in his head... why... "Oh!" he gasped out loud quickly closing his book. He was supposed to meet Julia at 5:45 at the dinner, she wanted to borrow a book from him for their next week's class.

Stumbling out of his leather chair, Nikolai raced around his apartment, pulling on decent pants and a short sleeved shirt over his long sleeved one. Pulling on his shoes he grabbed his coat, wallet and of course the book. He didn't even think about the still burning candle till he was down the street and the door was locked. It was just one small candle, what harm could it do?

----------------------------------------------------

An hour and a half later, 'quick visit' never was quick with Julia was concerned. The American girl had the mind of a doctor but the lifestyle of a raver. She spent hours just talking to someone about nothing at all. Even now Nikolai couldn't remember exactly what they'd even been conversing about. It could have been the inner workings of a clock or the color of the subway cars. Julia had thoughts on them all.

Heaving off his jacket and placing his wallet and keys onto the side table, Nikolai sighed. Thank the stars he was home. He could sit down and enjoy the re- bam!

Staring up at the ceiling for a moment, the black haired boy blinked his green eyes. He was sure he hadn't meant to lay down, and he knew his floor was clean so why or how had he tripped? Slowly, as if he were afraid of hurting his back, he sat up to take a mental check of everything.

No clothing on the floor, check. No papers, check. No oi-... not check. Blinking again Nikolai leaned closer to the hard wood floor. Oil foot prints. Someone was in his house! They were so small though... 'Thieves come in every shape and size' his mothers voice came floating through his head suddenly.

Stalking through his house he searched for the intruder, with a baseball bat as his weapon, why did he have a baseball bat? He hated baseball! Oh yes, because tossing a soccer ball at someones head wasn't as effective and swinging a bat.

The search was quick, he eliminated the kitchen, and the front room, though he was upset to see they'd broken the burner sitting on the floor, the oil all around it. Foot steps could be seen in the shine of the lights, which he'd thankfully left on, heading from the burner to the rest of the house. The first bedroom was empty as it normally was, the office proved to have no one in it, the bathroom looked as if it had been used. His red and white towels were folded into an amazingly beautiful ornate design. Why would a thief fold his towels?

With the bathroom being empty the last place to check was his own bedroom. Ahhh he didn't want to deal with this! Why did he have to have a thief in his house?!

With the courage of his father, which wasn't that much at all, he walked into his bedroom, baseball bat raised in a threatening way, and stopped. In his bed was a little girl with long black hair. She was humming softly and folding the laundry he'd been putting off all day. "Erk..." he muttered catching her attention. Looking over, she smiled brightly. "Yo koso," she muttered softly, her voice reminding Nikolai of warm sunshine.

"I... hello.." he muttered, walking farther into the room as she turned and bowed to him. "You... who are you?"

"I am your's from now on, Nikolai..." the girl said having him blink even more.

"What?!" Nikolai gasped out, dropping his bat to the ground. "You can't be mine. Is this a joke? Aren't you a thief?"

Laughing softly, the girl shook her head. "No. You're very amusing. I was your's the day you bought me, however I didn't look like this when you did... Perhaps you could name me then we could go back to the shop? I would like very much to be called something other then the name of a drug," she said getting off his bed, her green obi trailing behind her.

"Shop... drug. Oh my god. This can't be happening. You're Opium?" He gasped out, everything fitting into place in his head. "I but... " he said slowly sitting on the ground, holding his head in his hands.

Laughing again, the girl stopped in front of him and cupped his cheeks, reminding him of how the smoke would always caress his cheek if he were close to the burner, "It'll be fine." She whispered, petting his face before placing a kiss on his nose.

"I... I must be crazy but okay," Nikolai said before sparing her a smile. "Keiko..." he muttered, "Your name will be Keiko... it means dragon fly, at least the way I'll write it," he said before smiling again when she smiled as well.

"Keiko... thank you. I love it."
