It was a relatively peaceful afternoon, shattered by Eriol's shouting. Where was that woman when he wanted her? Frowning, he stormed into the kitchen, loud as ever. "Mom? Hey Mom, are you 'round?"

"Shhh." Putting her finger to her lips, DS shook her head, oblivious to the fact that the person she was speaking to over the phone wouldn't notice. "No, I'm sorry Mr. Kent, that was just my son Eriol. Yes, I'm still willing to negotiate."

A simple shushing wouldn't shut Eriol up, but he did lower his voice considerably. "What? Ya said you wanted ta talk ta me when Vivi was sleepin, an now all ya do is shush me. Th'hell 'd you want, anyways?"

Still preoccupied with the phone, DS pointed at a small glass on the counter, then shook her head again. "No, that's not the way it is at all..."

"Well great." Rolling his eyes in true teenage fashion, Eriol stomped over and took a good look at the cup. It was made of plain clear plastic, and filled about three quarters of the way with a light blueish liquid. There was a yellow post-it stuck to the bottom, which Eriol paid no attention to as he lifted the drink. "Well, bottoms up an' all that..."

"NO!" Nearly dropping the phone, DS yanked it up by the cord and hissed an apology into the mouthpiece before covering it with her hand. "No, Eri, can't you read?"

Smarting a little from the scolding, Eriol ripped the note off the bottom of the cup and held it up to the light, reading aloud.

"Dear Eriol, this cup was given ta me, and I'd like ya ta take care'f it. Maybe it'll teach ya some more 'sponsibility." Eriol snorted, then continued reading. "Do not under any circumstances drink the liquid. Not even a 'lil. I'll know. Much love, Mom."

"Now, take it to your room." Affectionately rubbing the teen's hair, DS grinned as if she'd done him a huge favor and went back to the phone. "I'm sorry about that, Mr. Kent. No, I don't need to reschedule, it's all taken care of now."

Eriol glared at the cup as if it had bitten him. "All righ' now," he scoffed, "'cause she got ta dump another thin' on me."

The cup's liquid splooshed blandly, as it was carried to its new home.

Some days later, the cup was sitting on Eriol's desk, innocuously taking in sun and a little bit of dust. It had been shoved into a corner, behind a few loose pieces of paper, and was all but forgotten.

There was someone, however, who noticed it.

Linnea wasn't one to venture into other people's rooms, especially when their tenants weren't around. In fact, she wasn't one to venture outside of her own room for much more than meals and baths. Her room was her place; it was safe and she only had things and people she liked in it. The outside world was often scary and always unpredictable. Even in the house, where everyone was generally nice to her, bad things could happen.

But something had been prickling at the edge of her senses. It got to the point where she just couldn't take it anymore, so she tiptoed out of her room, holding a smooth stone in one hand for comfort. The room nearest hers belonged to Eriol, who she got along with when he wasn't in a bad mood, so she wasn't too scared when she pushed the door open.

The room was devoid of people. It was not, however, devoid of life. A wisp of red smoke was clouding the window, forming a vaguely humanoid shape. "Looking for something?" it asked, somewhat amused.

Instinctively stepping back, Linnea shook her head. She wasn't looking for anything specific. She just wanted to know what the weird feeling was. But she wasn't going to tell the red puffball that.

The being gave its equivalent of a shrug, and dissipated. "Very well, young miss."

At least whatever it was had stopped talking to her. Catching her breath, Linnea turned to leave, when something sparkling caught her eye.

It was a plain kitchen glass, filled with a light blue liquid that sloshed around as Linnea cradled the cup. It didn't seem particularly lively or special otherwise. But it was liquid, and it was blue.

That was enough. Stealing furitive glances to make sure the coast was clear, Linnea held the cup to her chest and tiptoed back to her own room. Eriol would certainly never miss it. And she might at least get some pleasure out of it.

Linnea set the cup on her nightstand, and sat on her bed, looking through the glass to the table below. Something about it made her smile.

"Kids, lunchtime!"

"I'll be back," Linnea whispered, petting the cup's rim before scurring back out the door. If she got to lunch on time, no one would be the wiser.

For some reason, Linnea was often drawn to the glass. She spent a good deal of time watching it. The liquid inside never did anything interesting- at least, nothing that other liquids didn't do- but that didn't make any difference.

It got to the point that one of Linnea's small friends started to worry. A small, yellow-skinned female named Maka sat on the edge of the nightstand, a frown set into her features. "Linnea, what are you doing?"

The sound made Linnea turn in surprise. It wasn't often that the Nimue who shared her room spoke. In fact, sometimes it was easy to forget that she was there at all. So when the question came, it was answered. "Watching."

"Watching? Watching what?" Maka raised her eyebrows incredulously. What was there to watch? Dust particles? A beverage? The light in the room? None of it seemed all that fascinating.

That Linnea couldn't answer, at least not with an explanation that would please the Nimue. Saying that she just wanted to watch the glass would sound silly, and saying that she wasn't watching anything in particular would sound like a lie.

After several moments of silence, Maka sighed. "I get the picture. Can I 'watch' with you?"

"Okay."

At least that meant she'd be doing... something. Whatever that something was. Grumbling slightly, Maka watched the space in front of her. "Why are we doing this?"

Again, Linnea didn't answer.

"Fine." They sat for several minutes like that, neither being moving. It took that long for Maka to fall asleep, leaning back against the cold glass surface of the cup.

Linnea, however, was still watching. Waiting. For what, she might never know.

metaplot-1

Linnea wavered slightly. "What?"

"There's a letter for you," DS repeated, waving it lightly. "Well, it's adressed to me, but it's from that Drinkables place, and since you're taking care of Ren, it's really for you. They say that she needs a checkup, and there'll be a potluck too!" This DS wholeheartedly approved of. If there was business to be taken care of, there needed to be food as well. But the rest of the letter must have been a typo. "Midnight? That's no time for children to be outside..."

A potluck? Living with DS, Linnea knew what that was: a party in which people brought different foods. It wasn't the foods that worried Linnea; with help from her mother she could probably bring anything she wanted. It was the people. They would probably want to talk to Ren, and Ren would need her to be there, so the people would talk to her as well. Linnea shuddered at the thought. Crowds of strangers were bad enough, crowds of people wanting to talk to her would be even worse.

"It'll be okay. You don't have to stay long. All you need to do is go and get Ren checked out, drop off a plate of something yummy, and come home." Not that she would want her daughter staying at some godforsaken place late anyway. Already DS knew she'd have to appoint someone, probably Eriol, to accompany the girls. But even with Eriol's experience dealing with both crowds and dark alleys, she was still uneasy about approving the visit.

It wasn't that easy. Ren would want to stay and socialize, and Linnea knew that she wouldn't be able to let the bubbly girl down. But if Eriol was coming with her, she would be a little more comfortable. He was one of the family members she felt more close to, and while he was a bit distant, she knew he wouldn't let anyone bother her or Ren much. "I'll go ask."

"And I'll start making some of my prize-winning cake!"

~~~
And that was how the strange trio found themselves wandering down a dark alley, one carrying a large tray of more than just cake, the other with a small cup of club soda in one hand and a golf club tucked under her arm. Where the five-iron had come from no one was really sure of, but DS had insisted, and Linnea felt safer with it, even if it wasn't exactly in her hand and ready to strike.
"A club in each hand," Eriol had said as they were leaving the house. On the street, however, he was silent. Part of this was because he was staying alert, just in case. More importantly, he knew that neither of them really felt like talking. Linnea wasn't big on conversation, and his own thoughts were preoccupied. At least he was getting out for the evening, with Viviana being cared for by the girls at home, but he could think of more fun things to do than accompany some cup kid to a checkup. And speaking of that cup... Eriol winced, wishing it would shut up.
Since neither Linnea nor Eriol had said much of anything since they left, Ren had taken it upon herself to brighten things up. It had started on the train, with a little humming. By the time they disembarked it had become lilting singing like the kind Ren had done when she first appeared. Now it was full out belting, with a surprisingly strong voice for such a little girl. It was easily heard in the immediate vicinity, and in the quiet of night had the illusion of being louder.
"You're never fully dressed!"
Linnea wasn't exactly fond of the singing, since she felt that any eyes that might be nearby would immediately be drawn to them, but she couldn't possibly ask Ren to stop, or even to soften her voice. Instead she inched closer to Eriol, leaning her head on his arm gently.
"Though you may dress the best!" Ren continued, having to take deep breaths between lines.
At this point Eriol would have loved to shove the cup, girl and all, into the nearest bar, or at least under the glass dome that protected the treats from the elements. Unfortunately, he knew better. Hopefully they would be there soon.
"You're never fully dressed without a smile! Oooh, look, people!" The last part was spoken in an out of breath voice instead of sung, and Ren pointed enthusiastically. "Do you think that's it?"
"Probably," Linnea replied. Suddenly she was feeling nervous again. Maybe they could still go back. Or Eriol could take Ren. She had her golf club. She would be safer in the dark than with all those people-
Easily recognizable were the signs of a faeling in doubt, and Eriol pushed her forwards gently. "It'll be fine, Lin. Promise."
metaplot-2.5
The night was too much for Linnea. After staying up late and having to spend time with lots of strange people, she was exhausted. The fact that the party never really happened could be taken as a bad sign, but also a good one, since she wouldn't have wanted to stay among more people anyway. Afterwards, she had made it on the train okay, but dozed off before they reached their stop.
The dutiful big brother, Eriol hadn't had the nerve to wake her. Instead he pulled her over his shoulders, where she had woken up just briefly enough to wrap her arms around his neck. That done, he had taken her the rest of the way piggyback, carrying Ren's glass in one hand. It was difficult, clumsy, and heavy, but thankfully they didn't have far to go.
Linnea wasn't the only tired one. For a while, Ren had tried to engage Eriol in conversation, without much luck. After that she took to singing, but while before she had started soft and gotten louder, here she had gotten quieter as the ride progressed. When they got off the train she had been singing barely above a whisper, and as they approached the house she too was fast asleep.
"An leavin' me ta clean up," Eriol muttered. With his one free hand under Linnea's leg he pushed the front door open and tiptoed down the hall towards the bedrooms. His first stop was in the girl's, and his first action was to set the glass on the nightstand with a soft clink.
Ren barely shifted, adjusting her head slightly. "Mmm... sparklies," she murmured softly.
Yep, that girl was fine. Shrugging his stiff shoulders, Eriol then leaned back and set the faeling on her bed, removing her hands from his sore neck. He watched Linnea tense, then relax, and smirked as her sandals fell onto the floor. She was otherwise clothed, but he wasn't about to do anything to change that. It was a warm night, so she would probably be fine in her kimono and socks. She was dry, however, so before he left Eriol grabbed the spray bottle off the dresser and spritzed Linnea lightly.
Even asleep, Linnea felt the tiny droplets against her skin and relaxed even more. Her dreams, which were chaotic and frightening, involving crowds and loud noises, shifted to more calming images of lakes and rivers.
"G'night, ladies," Eriol whispered, shutting the door behind him. It was definitely bedtime.
METAPLOT PART II
Here we start our post-pinkopolyptic adventure! For the rest of our metaplot, you'll be on your own personalized RP adventure with a staff member guiding you, post for post until the inevitable conclusion! The faster you post, the faster you get to your goal! Responses must be at least a paragraph, and if you ever go more than a week without responding, you're out! (C'mon, guys. It doesn't take a week to write a paragraph.) These don't have to be as long as the original metaplot #1 and #2, as we're going for more an RP style than a journal style. This could take anywhere from three weeks (four if you're unfortunately with Raife) to three months, depending on how you play this out! LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED, BABY.
The sun was shining, with not a cloud in the sky on a beautiful, crisp fall day. Nothing at all seemed wrong.
Well. Except for the fact that Ren's drink appeared to be bubbling. Not the tiny bubbles that were normal for the drink girl, but big, boiling ones. However, the water wasn't even warm to the touch. Instead, it was ice cold, frosty even. Bubbles fizzed up and over her, not quite leaving the rim of the cup, but definitely threatening to, as if they were all trying to escape.
There was something extremely...claustrophobic about the drink.
...Oh yeah, and did I mention? The pink glow was back and stronger than ever.
It seemed that her kids were more popular that she was, DS thought as she plucked out a few articles that made up the bulk of the mail. There were cards, magazines, and a few letters. One of them was in an envelope so blindingly neon that she had to flinch. "Eri," she called, "mail for you."
Eriol was in the kitchen, trying to coax a recovering Viviana into eating some chicken broth. The girl was fussy, and the job difficult. He was glad to put down the small spoon and take the brightly colored letter.
With a muffled yawn because of her hands over her mouth, Viviana rolled over in her bassinet and kicked her legs. At least she wasn't hurting so much anymore, but she wasn't feeling great either. Outcry was equally lackluster, and showed it by blowing a puff of air apathetically.
Both of them, however, were startled enough to start whining when Eriol shouted.
"Aw YES!" Waving the letter gaily in one hand, Eriol got up and started skipping around the kitchen like a small child might. He was more excited and happy than anyone had seen him in months, and got a few stares from kids playing in the living room. While usually this would have bothered him, he was too busy whooping and hollering to care.
DS couldn't conceal a grin of amusement, and sent out a prayer of thanks to whoever had sent the letter. "Well! Must be good news."
"Heck yeah! I think it's from tha creepy green guy, but if he's doin' this he can' be that bad. All-expenses paid vacation, he's offerin'! To a beach, I think! For me, an' Vivi, and two other people if I wanna invite them!" Eriol couldn't remember the last time he'd had a vacation. In fact, he didn't think he'd ever had one.
It was a very generous offer, and one DS had to read for herself before she believed it. "Well... that is very kind of Pippin-san. I know you could use a break, sweets. I'm just glad you can get one. I'm sorry I-"
"Ma, don't." The last thing Eriol wanted was for his mother to go on one of her guilt trips, not when there was good news around. A real, honest vacation! And soon, according to the letter. "I'll hafta pack, and get some stuff ready, and- jeez, who'm I supposed to bring? You?"
DS laughed. "Thanks for the kind invite, but I couldn't possibly leave everyone alone. However, of you'd like to take anyone along, that's up to you."
It might not be a bad idea to have someone along. That way, they could take turns watching the squirts and also have some fun. But who? He hadn't seen any of his own friends in a while, which left family. If he invited Ying, she would insist on bringing Rinsei and Yeine, and that creepy shadow thing would come too. That would be anything but relaxing, so he decided to leave that group alone. Maybe a boy instead. "Karan?"
"To a beach?" Karan asked from the doorway. He popped inside, grabbed a couple cookies from off the counter, and headed back to the living room. "No thanks. Too sunny."
Sunburn wouldn't be fun, Xue added, taking one of the cookies for himself.
That took care of the boys. And if Karan wasn't going, Prana probably wouldn't either, not that Eriol particularly felt like asking her. There was one other girl he wouldn't mind having along, but he wasn't sure she would go for it.
Still, it couldn't hurt to ask.
"A beach?" Linnea blinked, running one hand around Ren's cup. "Me?"
The fae was sitting on her bed, and had been in the middle of demonstrating how to fold a paper cup. It was a fairly easy design, but she had been interrupted when Eriol came into the room and suddenly asked, out of the blue, if she wanted to go on vacation with him. To a beach, no less. It was a surprise, to say the least, and Linnea was at a loss for words.
"Sure. If you want. I mean, I'd ask ya to help watch Vivi, but there's prob'ly swimmin' and other fun stuff. An I'd like some comp'ny." Linnea was a pretty good choice. She was quiet, generally obedient, and big enough to still be some fun.
"Oh yay! We get to go on vay-cay-shun!" Splashing in her cup, which fizzed actively, Ren gave a small twirl. She wasn't sure what a vacation was, but it sounded like fun!
Of course, he'd forgotten about the cup, who was anything but any of those terms he'd used to describe Linnea. If she came too- and she would, if Linnea did- things could get messy. Or noisy. Probably both.
Linnea's eyes, however, were shining with anticipation. "Me? Really?"
"Um, yeah." It was too late to reconsider. Besides, if Linnea had a friend along, she would be happier. And her friend was small enough not to need a ticket, so Eriol could invite someone else if he wanted to. It seemed that he'd hit upon the perfect solution.
Linnea considered it for a few moments. If it was vacation at a fancy place there would probably be a lot of people there, and that would be scary. But Eriol would be there. And Ren would be there. And if they were there, she would be okay. Probably.
And if not, she could hole up in the hotel room for the rest of the trip.
"Okay," she whispered, nodding.
"Yaaaaay!" Ren shouted, splashing even more. She was practically glowing from excitement, and her bouncing rocked her cup just enough to be worrisome.
Eriol rolled his eyes. "But if you go, will you be quiet if'n I ask ya to?"
Quiet? Being quiet was so boring. But if vacations were as fun as they sounded, she could stand being a little quiet, which had to count. "Okay!"
The Drinkable agreed a little too quickly for Eriol to believe her, but he nodded anyway. He could deal with it later. Maybe she wouldn't sound so annoying if he was on a beach, getting a tan and chatting up some ladies. "Okay. So we're leavin' soon, so get ready an stuff. Pack. Yeah."
"Okay."
"Okay."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 19, 2006 6:20 pm
A small group ran towards the gate, led by a woman in a kimono, pulling a suitcase and herding a few children and a couple large, shaggy winged dogs behind her. "I can see it," she called behind her, waving her free arm. "Hurry up!"
No matter how many times Eriol insisted that he and Viviana and Linnea would be fine getting to the airport by themselves, his mother insisted otherwise. So he was stuck shouldering his backpack and lugging Viviana and Outcry in their bassinet through a crowd of busy people. Thankfully they were almost at the gate.
Linnea was also wearing a backpack, and pulled a smaller suitcase in one hand. In her other hand was a small cup of club soda, which looked bigger than it was due to the thick foam grip around it. It was supposed to be just in case the glass was jarred, a sort of buffer, but Linnea worried anyway. She stepped over to the attendant and let the woman take her suitcase, leaving her hand free to wave to the sendoff party.
"Oh, have fun sweets," DS said, patting Eriol's shoulder as she handed the suitcase she had over as well. "Make sure you call when you get there. And eat properly. And if you need anything, anytime, let me know. And wear plenty of sunblock. And-"
"It's fine, Mom," Eriol laughed. If he let her go on much longer she would probably end up on the plane.
"Eriol-niisan, send us postcards, okay?"
"Take pictures!"
"Remember, you said you'd bring back something!"
"Don't let Eri-niisan boss you around, Lin-chan, Ren-chan!"
Have funfunfunfunfun!
Somehow Eriol managed to get through the throng of the farewell committee and the well-wishes and over to the airline counter, where he flashed his passes. There were four- one for him, one for Linnea, one for Viviana, and one for the Tala next to them who would serve as a sort of chaperone. Once those were approved, he gave one last wave and headed onto the plane.
Viviana wasn't sure what was happening, but it was exciting. Rubbing Outcry's belly with one hand, she waved her other in an imitation of what everyone else was doing. Already this was turning out to be fun.
"Baaaa!"
Linnea had already headed onto the plane. Her seat was next to a window, which was comforting, but she pulled the shade down anyway. She wasn't sure she wanted to see the plane lift off, but the inside of clouds would probably be cool. That done, she unfolded her tray table and carefully set Ren's glass down.
"About time," Ren complained, stretching her arms. "Aren't your hands tired? Mine are, and I didn't even do anything."
"Not really." It was comforting, holding something, or someone, close to her. The thick foam that Ren's cup was surrounded by helped matters a little.
Ren shrugged, and leaned back against the rim of her glass. A few moments later the cup's contents began to splash agitatedly, almost enough to send droplets over the edge.
"Stop that." It wasn't a scolding, but more a concern. Linnea knew that she wasn't supposed to tip the glass over. But having all its liquid splash out couldn't have been good either.
Looking up in surprise, Ren shook her head. "I'm not doing anything. It's like my own jack... jaku... what's it called again?"
Linnea frowned, then nodded. "Jacuzzi."
"Yeah, that! It's all bubbly. Sort of fun." But Ren's voice wasn't quite convinced, and even though she was stock-still, the soda splooshed as actively as ever.
It was difficult to see what was going on, so Linnea picked the cup up again and pulled off its foamy coating. The cup burned her hand slightly, but from cold rather than heat. There was a thin coat of condensation on the outside, and through it she could see large bubbles rising to the surface and popping, the source of the strange splash.
Ren made a face. "See? It wasn't me."
But Linnea wasn't listening. Instead, she was staring at Ren, who seemed to be turning a strange shade of pink. While they were in the airport Linnea had assumed it was an effect of the neon lights they were fond of using, but now that theory was shot down.
It was a matter of seconds before Ren noticed this too. "Oooo! I'm all glowy!" she squealed. "But I like the color I usually am."
"Me too," Linnea agreed.
"So, are ya ready to- yikes!" Eriol was joining them, but the cup's strange appearance took him by surprise. "Wha' happened ta you?"
Ren shrugged. "I dunno. It's kinda funny, isn't it?"
"Sure is. Tell ya what, when we get there we'll call those people, kay? They might know what ta do."
That made Linnea feel better. She put the foam bumper back on Ren's glass and settled in, not quite as worried. Eriol and the people in charge would make sure things were put right.
Almost overnight, the bubbles seemed to have disappeared. In fact, completely. Also gone were the bubbles that were normally associated with Ren, the tiny fizzing club-soda ones. Had she gone flat? Thankfully, something else had disappeared for the moment. That strange pink glow had gone back into recession. It was just Ren in the cup now, with her no-bubble liquid, back to normal temperature, if maybe...just maybe, the slightest hint of residual cold.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 10, 2006 11:11 am
The second day of their vacation had dawned, and outside the plush hotel room it was absolutely gorgeous. Golden sand, sparkling blue sea, the view was stunning, and Linnea spent much of her time at the window looking out at the people frolicking on the beach. They looked like they were having fun, swmming and building sand castles and playing volleyball and other such things.
Linnea hoped it would rain. Then all of the people would go inside, and she would be able to go outside and explore without worrying about strangers, or drying out in the sun, or anything like that. She would even take her umbrella, since she knew Ren didn't like to get wet.
She looked back into the room at the young Drinkable, whose glass was sitting on the coffee table. She had been oddly subdued ever since they arrived, and even more so that morning. She hadn't even wanted to look outside.
"It's a nice day," Linnea commented. Of course, it would be nicer if it was raining, but she didn't say that.
Ren sat in her cup, looking into the liquid with no trace of an expression on her face. When Linnea spoke she looked up, shrugged, and cast her glance back into the depths of the glass.
Frowning, Linnea stepped away from the window and over to the coffee table, kneeling next to it. "What's wrong?"
"Mph." With a slight shrug, Ren didn't even look up that time, just staring at the still, clear liquid.
She was already taking more than she liked to, but Ren was her friend and if talking would make things better, Linnea had to try. "The bubbles are gone."
"I know!" Ren yelled unexpectedly. Horrified, she clapped her hands over her mouth. She hadn't meant to shout. After all, shouting was noise, and she was supposed to be quiet. She was just upset. "I know," she said meekly. "But they're all gone now! Not just the big splashy ones! The good ones too!"
At first taken aback by Ren's outburst, Linnea leaned forward just a bit to examine the cup. There wasn't any movement at all, even the tiny carbonation bubbled she was used to seeing. "How come?"
"I don't know," Ren whimpered. She liked her bubbles. She didn't want them to be gone.
"It's okay," Linnea murmured, rubbing the side of the glass comfortingly. It was a bit cold, just enough to sting her hand. But it was probably from the air conditioning, so she let it be. When Eriol-niisan got back, he would make everything better.
The lack of bubbles, her flat soda, seems to be affecting Ren. She seems to be going flat! She seems to be suffering from the same doldrums as David, leaving her listless in her cup. Lifeless. She doesn't want to do any of the things she normally likes to do, and seems to find distress with too much life and activity around her. The bubbles show no sign of returning, adding just one more harsh blow to the tiny drink girl.
